<description>arguably mac hardware is not significantly more expensive than 1st
tier pc hardware (e.g. Dell, Lenovo...) of equivalent spec. in fact
you can buy much more expensive pc hardware.

that said, "reference" pc hardware (e.g. using Intel GMA950 graphics
and wireless, having the TPM chip) like most business notebooks these
days, are exactly like the mac reference hardware. i ought to try it
on my toshiba one of these days...

<description>two choices that I can think of:

1. sshfs for windows. The name is DokanSSHFS. With this, you can
directly open the file in the US in windows explorer as if it's
locally on your machine. Note, have used Dokan once in a while, so I
can' comment it's performance if you used it heavily.

2. custom script + ssh. You can do scripting where you strip all
windows relevant information, and send to the remote site via scp.

<description>Yes... have done that in the past on an AMD64 machine with 1Gb of RAM.

The experience of using as a desktop it as is a different matter. Some
crashing of the video card drivers I have noticed. It all depends on
the devices that you have and the custom/quality of drivers that comes
with it.

It reminds me of BeOS hunting for drivers, which half the time are of
alpha/beta quality.

Bottom line, for a desktop, it's not worth it(unless your current
devices are supported very well.), and just go for Linux.

The standard retail disk won't work--- PC is bios-based while Macs are

your install disk and target disk boots properly.

psystar in fact is offering os x on non-apple hardware. they have an

As with hacks like this, i am guessing, mileage varies.

Yeah I guess it needs an answer then. Yup you can have that running on
Tiger. Not sure about Leopard. The problem though is that you need to
have some fancy stuff on the installer. The standard discs won't work
because of firmware restrictions. When Apple makes an major OS update,
your installation will most likely break. 1GB for OS X is pretty much
minimum you get better performance on 2GB or higher.

AFAIK, only *nix systems recognize the shebang line. Whatever you put
on that line shouldn't matter on window$ as it uses file association to
open .pl files, at least that's what I remember from back when I was
programming Perl on window$.

Use $^O and look into the source code of File::Spec for tips. You
should also read `perldoc perlport` on how to write portable Perl
code. If you prefer to read perlport with a web browser, head over to
http://perldoc.perl.org/perlport.html :-)

Any NVIDIA CUDA coders here? Can't make my mind to go look for a
GeForce 8000 series with 1GB DDR3 but with CUDA v1.1 only, or go for
the more expensive GeForce 9000 series but with CUDA 2. GeForce's cost
and avilability is a factor here.

Only difference I think between the two CUDA versions, other than
later hardware support, is that CUDA offers slightly better array
memcpy performance.

My quad-core Intel CPU is running out of steam. Was thinking of simply
re-compiling stuff meant for gcc, with NVIDIA's nvcc. Has anybody here
found out if it's really straightforward?
