Presentation:
  Exploring the Terminal
  by Micah Cowan

Everything you ever wanted to know about the terminal -- the virtual
consule used for interacting with the command-line and text-based
  applications:

    * how terminals work,
    * the special codes used to move the cursor to different positions,
set colors and graphical effects, draw dialogs, or designate character
      encodings,
    * the terminfo and termcap databases for terminal features,

  and how to:

    * make a custom color bash prompt,
    * record and play back terminal sessions,
    * create interactive demos to run on the terminal, and
    * manage a set of "virtual" terminals you can disconnect from and
reconnect to, using tools called terminal multiplexers.

Various useful utility programs will be covered in the course of this
  talk, including:

    * script, scriptreplay

<pre>Hi,

Partimus.org is going to be hosting a pizza party and triagefest /
installfest tomorrow at the Creative Arts Charter School at 1601 Turk
Street at Pierce St in San Francisco from 1 pm to about 3:30 pm.

We have about a dozen machines to install with GNU-Linux. Mostly detail
work (packing notebooks up, numbering them). If there's human resources and
interest, post installation work could be done (log in, connect to the
wifi, validate that a browser works -- that sort of thing. Q/A basically.

Bring USB sticks with Lubuntu 12.04 on them. If you don't have that,
Ubuntu 12.04 will do. No need to worry about UEFI. Please also bring
everything that you would need to triage hardware. Screw drivers, needle
nose pliers, etc.

When you arrive, please text or call Christian at 415-351-1300 so that I
can let you in, as the school is quite large, and you could get lost.
Thanks!

<pre>Hi everyone,

Once again, we've decided to sync up our monthly San Francisco Ubuntu
Hour with the 2nd Wednesday date of the Bay Area Debian Meeting, to
offer an evening of Ubuntu and Debian!

So this Wednesday, April 10th, the plan is as follows:

First, from 6-7PM:

San Francisco Ubuntu Hour
Location: The Roastery, 199 New Montgomery Street, San Francisco
Details: http://loco.ubuntu.com/events/ubuntu-california/2331-ubuntu-hour-san-francisco/

Then, from 7-9PM:

Bay Area Debian Meeting
Location: Henry's Hunan Restaurant, 110 Natoma Street, San Francisco
Details: http://bad.debian.net/list/2013-April/003539.html

So come out to the Ubuntu Hour and join us for dinner at the Bay Area
Debian Meeting!

To find us at both events, look for the people in the Linux shirts and
the penguin, Squeeze and Wheezy stuffed toys. At Henry's Hunan we'll
have reservations under "Bay Area Debian"

Hope to see you there!

Sure!

If you look at the specs of something like a Raspberry Pi, they're
pretty minimal spec machines. You can get a modest graphical interface
running on them but it's not going to be particularly useful for
modern document processing or browsing the web, particularly if you
end up doing things like flash or java-based edutainment games, which
a lot of children do.

The allure of the Pentium 4 systems we shipped to Ghana (which are
pretty much identical in specs to ones Partimus puts in local charter
schools and centers here) is that they are actually similarly priced
as these machines since they come donated - the ones shipped to Ghana
were somewhere around $20-30/each and came refurbished from the
Goodwill organization in Pittsburgh, PA. You do still need to ship
monitors since the old CRT TVs that they have access to don't have
good enough resolution (even a big flat panel TV you buy today still
can't match resolution on most standard monitors) and unfortunately
most of the hardware like keyboards and</pre>

Thanks for the link to the slides and for the useful
term "photo-heavy".
In the last year or two there has been an increase in
the number of small form factor low cost computer models
on the market. These range in price from about $30 to a
little over $100. What they don't have is displays and
keyboards.
I wonder if such computers would be easier to manage
to get to where they're intended (as opposed to some
way(-lay) station run by fee-hungry officialdom). If so,
are there sufficient keyboards and displays in the locale
(maybe teevees)? And might it be possible for one person
to send a single such small form factor computer directly
through the mail or global shipping to a school or person
connected to a school or other needy institution?

Wednesday, February 13th: San Francisco Ubuntu Hour and Bay Area Debian meeting

<pre>Hi everyone,

Once again, we've decided to sync up our monthly San Francisco Ubuntu
Hour with the 2nd Wednesday date of the Bay Area Debian Meeting, to
offer an evening of Ubuntu and Debian!

So this Wednesday, February 13th, the plan is as follows:

First, from 6-7PM:

San Francisco Ubuntu Hour
Location: The Roastery, 199 New Montgomery Street, San Francisco
Details: http://loco.ubuntu.com/events/ubuntu-california/2181/detail/

Then, from 7-9PM:

Bay Area Debian Meeting
Location: Henry's Hunan Restaurant, 110 Natoma Street, San Francisco
Details: http://bad.debian.net/list/2013-February/003526.html

So come out to the Ubuntu Hour and join us for dinner at the Bay Area
Debian Meeting!

To find us at both events, look for the people in the Linux shirts and
the penguin, Squeeze and Wheezy stuffed toys. At Henry's Hunan we'll
have reservations under "Bay Area Debian"

Hope to see you there!

Re: Charter Schools Yet Again [was Re: A blog about Linux in public schools]

<pre>Quoting Akkana Peck (akkana-xsA6Fsh27J7Z1NkodEmWbg&lt; at &gt;public.gmane.org):

That's good, and I'm cheered to hear it. If Christian would do this
consistently and not just say 'publci school', there would not be an
issue.

Anyway, time to leave this thread, I think. (Looks like lawsuit boy is
still at it.)

Partimus publicity ;-)

<pre>
Amazing publicity. ;-) Why, (originally) intended or not, mere
mention of the phrase "public school"(s) in context of publicly funded
non-profit charter school(s), and just look at the typical additional
coverage, "discussion", debate, etc. achieved. Why a single mention of
that phrase in a single post[2] results in touching off 74[3] or more
follow-up posts, including even multiple testimonials[4][5]. "No such
thing as bad publicity" - debatable if it would even be "bad"
publicity, but publicity it certainly is. Intended and/or not, is
rather effective, eh?
