Thanks for the note. No, I'm not familiar with 'nx' - I'll have a look.

That said,
  (1) my issues are with the window manager, not the server, and
  (2) I've somehow avoided setup hassles. (Maybe I should try Ubuntu! &amp;8-)

Greg,

I use reverse tunnels as a primary means of access and have little issues
with it.

To keep the connection alive, I run a "keepalive" script that merely runs
ls, sleeps 60 seconds and repeats on the target host. I also fork the ssh
process in the background and have TCPKeepAlive set to yes in my ssh config.

My ssh config has all my RemoteForwards statements. My command line is:

ssh -f target_host "~/keepalive.sh"

The other thing I did but does not seem to work properly is I have a 5min
cronjob that looks for my ssh process. If the process is not found it runs
the command above.

This is little tacky but it seems to work for me.

<description>Very interesting, but the most interesting part is the author. I thought her
name looked familiar, then I remembered that Laura DiDio was a particularly
vocal, if clueless, supporter of SCO during its recent legal bullying of Linux
users. A Wikipedia search on her will give you the details.

The chart itself bears the hallmarks of her sloppy journalism:

"OpenSource Linux (e.g. Debian)" What, and the other distros aren't?

Ubuntu perhaps deserves its own listing, but she doesn't {know || bother to
mention} that it's based on Debian

And ironically, she mentions several "flavors" of Unix, but not SCO?!

I don't have time to do more digging on this, but wasn't the Yankee Group a
supporter of SCO somehow during the lawsuits?

As it is, this chart tells us nothing we wouldn't already have suspected, and
without a methodology to analyze it, it's worthless as tool for planning policy
purposes.

Sorry if this was covered earlier, I've only been following loosely.
Have you considered trying the nx server/client from nomachine.com?
Free for single user use and smokes vnc in speed. More importantly, you
won't run into a tenth of the hassle in setup that is found with the vnc
variants on ubuntu.

And , as expected they have the most annual downtime of the OS'es surveyed.
