schedule, the party featuring musical guest MC Frontalot, the beer list,
and more!
http://www.southeastlinuxfest.org/news/t-2-weeks-...-tons-important-info

If there is somebody who is attending SELF 2013 willing to take any
leftover swag (tshirts, lanyards, etc) from the event and distribute them
to the LUG, please send me an email offlist.

The only stipulations are:
1) You must be at SELF on Sunday (at least until say noon-ish).
2) You must give everything away for free to LUG members ... reselling is
SERIOUSLY not cool.

<pre>Hi all,

I agree with what Brian said, but wanted to add some explanatory notes.

Regarding damaging the drive further, if the drive has mechanical problems, or has had a head crash or hard error, any data recovery program could cause further damage. This is particularly true if there is crash residue on the platter surface or if, horrors, the head remains in contact with the platter. Spinrite uses very aggressive head movement in data recovery mode, so it shouldn't be used if you think there is physical damage to the drive. I would think that even using ddrescue could kill a drive in that case.

I personally own Spinrite and have had good results with it. I also recommend it. You can find out about it at

https://www.grc.com/spinrite.htm
https://www.grc.com/sr/spinrite.htm
https://www.grc.com/cs/prepurch.htm

although some of the documentation there is a bit dated. Steve Gibson, the inventor, also sometimes quotes user testimonials on his Security Now podcast. Those are interesting and I believe the</pre>

<pre>If you wanted to try DIY, take a look at ddrescue.

There's also Spinrite, which costs money but so far it has worked really
well for me. Some people don't like it because it writes back to the "bad"
drive and could make things worse, but I think that will mainly be an issue
if there is physical damage to the drive.

I would try to make an image using ddrescue, then you could try spinrite
and if it makes things worse, then you've already got the backup image.

bring some pretty bad drives back to life long enough to backup the data.

I'm may have missed the beginning of this, but why do you need to try match opensuse versions to sles versions?
There really is no direct correlations anymore.
I work with SLES daily as part of my business, but I always run the latest opensuse on my desktop.

You can probably still get the Java 1.6 JDK from Oracle's site but you should know they've EOLed it and it has security issues. If possible you should be moving on to 1.7.

RedHat recently announced they're leaving 1.6 in their repositories but won't be doing any bug or security fixes any longer.

That's because 11.4 has been de-supported. It is rather old. Check out this URL for more info on the OpenSUSE support lifecycle.

While true that it is closer to SLES11, if you are going the OpenSUSE route, it is best to run 12.3.

not going to be recoverable.

On a side note (and some may call me crazy) I've had good luck using
SpinRite (yes, the SpinRite from Steve Gibson of Security Now! fame).
Say what you will but I've used it on several occasions and had it get a
disk working well enough to read the data off to another medium. Scott
will tell you it's a waste of money and it might cause more harm than
good (in some cases this may be true) but I've had luck with it so I
thought it was worth a mention.

<pre>Heard good things of them too (Moulton).
(Excellent) personal experience with Cherry, In Marietta.
Evidently we're fortunate to have some *good* local choices.

<pre>Why not install a more modern version of OpenSUSE if you are going that route? 12.3 is the current version. A quick search of software.opensuse.org (build service) shows the version you are looking for as being available for 12.3.

I installed Open SUSE 11.4 on another VM and I am working on it. It seems to be a bit more saner than 11.1

I installed subversion on it and it looks good.

However when I am trying to install maven a java build tool, I am not able to find it.

I dont expect OpenSUSE repos to host this package but how to find private ones ?

<pre>I have heard good things about Scott Moulton's myharddrivedied.com. I have
not used him personally, but I have been to a few of his talks. This guy
really knows his stuff.

<pre>ISTR that the topic of data recovery has come up before on the list. Does
anyone have recommendations for good places to get data recovered off a
laptop drive? The wife's laptop appears to have crapped out and she did
not have the latest set of photos backed up

TIA,
