Hi,

Just to be clear, we do need to know the name of the source edition - I
hope the "How to contribute" page makes this clear.

We don't ask for proof that the edition meets the given criteria,
although if you are not sure please don't risk getting us into legal
difficulties.

I'll 'clean up' the lilypond source files, add mutopia headers etc and
start contributing.

Hi there. I have a number of things to contribute to Mutopia;
stuff for flute/violin ad guitar (some originals, some adaptions).

Problem is, for some of them, I'm unsure what the source material is
and cannot give you that info unless/until I track it down at the library,
which might be a pain, especially in cases where there are multiple
publishers of a work.

I know the the material I plan to contribute was talken from sources
that meet Mutopia's criteria (copmposer et al dead 70 years, published
prior to 1923) but can't prove it initially.

Can I contribute any of these? Or should I hold off till I've found that
info?

Cheers,
Mike

Hi,

The project is very active, the mailing list less so!

If you use the 'Advanced Search' page, you will discover that 76 pieces
have been added or updated in the last four weeks.

If pieces conform to the specification on the 'How to Contribute' page,
then they will usually be added within a day or two. Corrections
requiring obscure LilyPond versions, and other queries, may take longer.

Hi Valentin,

Thanks for pointing that out. If I've understood correctly, what they
have done is to say that the three licenses in question (Public Domain,
Attribution, Attribution-ShareAlike) meet the criteria of the "Free
Cultural Works" project.

This is good because it confirms that we made the right decision
allowing these licenses to be used for Mutopia contributions.

I could add the logo to the Mutopia website somewhere, but strangely the
Creative Commons page given above uses a different logo to the Free
Cultural Works project itself:
http://freedomdefined.org/Definition

I'm not sure how well known these logos are. I haven't seen them
anywhere else.

Suggestions anyone?

as you may have noticed, the Creative Commons have just created a new
label that marks "free" works as in "compatible with FSF logic"; I

Perhaps that could be interesting for Mutopie licenses definitions, could it?

Just to let you know that the Mutopia archive reached 1000 pieces today!

Many thanks to all of the contributors over the last eight years. The
1000th piece was, appropriately enough, "Untitled" contributed by Stan
Sanderson at 0304 GMT this morning.

Incremental improvements to the archive/website continue. The most
recent is a "change history" feature allowing you to see what has
changed when a piece has been updated, be it a correction, for example:
http://www.mutopiaproject.org/cgibin/piece-info.cgi?id=1075

or additional movements/instruments, for example:
http://www.mutopiaproject.org/cgibin/piece-info.cgi?id=1026

I intend to update the website making it clearer that corrections are
accepted and encouraged. I have a large number of LilyPond versions
installed on my system (some using virtualization with old versions of
Linux), so updating most pieces is relatively simple.

Further improvements are to come, not least the updating of the
CGI-generated pages (music info + search results) to

Thanks for letting us know about this. It's sad to see this happen to
IMSLP, but the Cease and Desist letter is quite specific that the
problematic files are those containing music which is out of copyright
in the USA, but not in the EU and Canada.

This should not affect Mutopia as we have always accepted only scores
which are out of copyright in both the USA and the EU - the restrictions
of those areas combined (music published prior to 1923, and author[s]
dead more than 70 complete years) also cover the laws in almost every
other country.

Having said that, we cannot be complacent, and this is a timely reminder
that we need to be extremely careful with copyright issues.

IMSLP has been a great resource, and I strongly hope the majority of
their archive - which is out of copyright worldwide - can be restored in
the near future.
