"Not since the early days of MC5 at the Grande Ballroom in Detroit,
circa 1968, had there been such an organic melding of sheer metalesque
maelstrom and free jazz. These archival recordings from the legendary
punk club CBGB capture a moment in time when open-minded musicians
from the 'downtown scene' were exploring the possibility of bringing
Lou Reed's feedback-infested Metal Machine Music together with Albert
Ayler's Love Cry. Dissipated Face guitarist Kurt "Hologram" Ralske and
special guest saxophonist Daniel Carter provided that implausible link
between punk rock and avant garde jazz on these 1986 live recordings.
Fueled by the throbbing rhythms of Steve "X Dream" Popkin and Ben
"Face" Munves, who alternated on bass and drums, Ralske's twisted,
thrashing power chords and shrieking licks blend with Carter's
cathartic alto sax wailing to make the perfect union of dis</pre>

Just in case you've not spotted them yet, there are archive videos
appearing on YouTube.

4AD has a few lined up, and there's also the Beggars Archive channel (which
of course doesn't have any 4AD on it but covers most of the other Beggars
labels). Anything which is available on iTunes to buy should go live on
there eventually. One that isn't (yet) is Throwing Muses 'Fish'...

<pre>The managing director of Beggars France wanted to do more than simply promote and release exclusively what the Beggars labels were doing so he essentially received permission to "sign" a homegrown musician, in the form of Barbara Carlotti. It was agreed to allow Carlotti to fall under the 4AD umbrella. Two albums were released under this arrangement, Les Lys Brisés (2006) and L´Idéal (2008). The catalog numbers for the albums are somewhat modified (DEP 2610 CD &amp; DEP 2807 CD) to reflect the involvement of independent French label Dependent. The music itself it rather pleasant sounding pop sung in French by the lovely Ms. Carlotti. She has since "left" 4AD and her current album L'Amour, L'Argent, Le Vent was released in 2012 by Atmosphériques. The managing director of Beggars Canada has a similar arrangement, in that he releases homegrown talent Michael Hoppé via the Beggars machine.

Hi over there listees.

I was wondering if you people have listened to a french singer called Barbara Carlotti.

In her site, www.barbaracarlotti.com it says she has two records with 4AD: Les Lys Brisés (2006) and L´Idéal (2008). The old 4AD site had some information. But now, it´s not featured.

So you people know how this records sound? And there´s a story behind them?

Let me know.

Cheers.

<pre>I got some kind feedback on the previous scans, so I went rooting
through the basement some more. I didn't find much extra 4AD-related
stuff, but I did find this Melody Maker-created Pixies booklet:

http://eyesore.no/pdf/Pixies.Magazine.MM.19900101.pdf

And a few other bits and ends that I've also put at

http://eyesore.no/pdf/

But it led me to remembering that I had that long-out-of-print Emigre
4AD issue somewhere, so I managed to find that and scanned that, too. I
hope the Emigre people won't mind, but it's been out of print for 25
years now.

I scanned it at 600DPI, so the PDF is huge -- 700MB. You can find it at
the URL above.

Anyway, I had also apparently snipped everything Steven Wells wrote for
NME in those years, so I scanned that and put it here:

http://quimby.gnus.org/circus/pdf/

Along with some Morrissey and etc stuff.

The version of Gigantic on Surfer Rosa was produced by Steve Albini and has been remastered a few times - once as GAD803CD, again on the MOFI CD and again on the Minotaur box set. BUT - the BAD805CD version of Gigantic (produced by Gil Norton) exists only on that CD single and remains unremastered. Not a big deal, but I felt like pointing it out.

<pre>This is such a wonderful backcat-project, but now it seems they're all gone again! Any info on how limited this was/is? I suppose releases like this (or the TMC boxset) are mainly aimed at a few fans out there, but it's hard to understand why they have to be kept so limited, that they're sold out within a few weeks ...

<pre>Very intriguing indeed.
But i certainly won't be holding my breath. That other abandoned Book was a bit disappointing. I never really understood what kept the book from being published, some legal trouble or even conflicting interests? Well, here's hoping for next summer ...
