<pre>Hi Sven,

You are right. This is a bug I have introduced when fixing the HTML compliance
problem. This one is now solved.

Hum. I not able to reproduce that one. Could you be more precise? If I
understand correctly, you have:

  1- browsed http://localhost:8080/hop/doc
2- clicked on the small yellow icon on the bottom left

Nothing else? It might be that this is an "old" problem already solved.
I'm not sure...

I installed the latest hop server - worked fine!

Some problems:

If I click on the "doc" icon and then on any entry,
I get a hop window showing:
"hop Error: hop_notepad_select -- Can't find pad: doc-api"

If I select the hop dashboard in the lower left corner
and then click on the hop icon, a hop window reports:
"deprecated (add-event-listener! "g2831" "server"...)"

<pre>Dear Vincent Prunet,

we have chosen HOP as the programming environment of choice
for providing a question answering system on the web, see
http://www.loganswer.de/
HOP only serves as a frontend to this system (logging,
registering users and sending them emails, accepting
questions of users and showing computed answers to these
questions). The main work is done on other computers
running servers accessed by plain socket communication
and a proprietory protocol. These programs have been
written in bigloo scheme, so using a similar language
(hop) for implementing the web-based user interface
was a straightforward choice.
What I like about hop:
- similar language for developing client logic and
  server logic
- can develop client and server logic in one file,
so that interaction of client and server is easy
to see from the source code
- multithreading support (threads, mutexes,...)
- integration of sqlite (easy to develop web-based applications
that need to store data persistently)
- ease of integrating </pre>

Not yet because we are working with out sysadmins in a new solution
where hop.inria.fr will be a virtual machine.

For now, you can download the hop-2.3.0.tar.gz file, install it locally
and access the a local version of the hop home page with

<pre>Hi Sven,

I have significantly improved the HTML compliance. Now the Home web page
shows only 5 errors:

Line 25, Column 5465: there is no attribute "ONERROR"
Line 25, Column 5816: there is no attribute "DATA-HSS-TAG"
Line 25, Column 5880: there is no attribute "DATA-HSS-TAG"
Line 25, Column 5948: there is no attribute "DATA-HSS-TAG"
Line 25, Column 6132: there is no attribute "DATA-HSS-TAG"

The DATA-HSS-TAG are illegal but operational with HTML4 browsers and
legal with HTML5. I'm reluctant to switch from html4 to html5 for the
Hop home page because I think it would yield old browsers to no longer
to render the page correctly.

Same thing on the first error, the illegal ONERROR attribute. That
attribute is exclusively used by IE. It is harmless with other browsers
that don't use it. We could remove that attribute to improve compliance
but this would degrade portability! I think this is one of the any
examples of HTML compliance degrading HTML portability. I'm not enough
an HTML expert to find com</pre>

Yes.

One concern is ranking in search engines: popular search engines
downrank sites that show many HTML errors.

And: If your site comes back, you will see in the w3c validator
output that most defects seem very easy to be fixed because they
come from the main elements in HTML generation (like &lt;IGM&gt;) in hop.

<pre>and a last word about HTML validation...

I don't think HTML validation represents a guaranty of any kind that the
web page is portable. In my experience, with modern browsers, that is
all browsers expect IE&lt;7) 99% of the incompatibility issues come from
JavaScript, not from HTML nor CSS. The two critical points being:

1- When are JavaScript expressions evaluated.

2- When a new HTML fragment containing a SCRIPT is inserted, is that SCRIPT
     executed or not.

<pre>Hi Sven,

Okay. I think we could have a discussion here. I think there are two reasons
for Hop HTML code not be compliant.

1- Hop let programmers generate arbitrary HTML code. Hence, it is possible
to generate non compliant code. Is that a problem for Hop? My point of
     view is that it not.

2- Hop uses some tricks that have now been integrated in HTML5 (in particular
the data-XXX attributes). We have not totally replaced uncompliant
attributes with compliant ones but we will in a close future. I don't see
     this as a real problem.

All that said, we should probably works harder to make the main hop page
W3C compliant. I don't feel a strong incentive for doing that now but I
agree that it would better.
