I tried sysctl -w kernel.powersave-nap = 1, and, unfortunately, it didn't
help.

The option with patching the kernel with an older version didn't seem worth
to me considering the potential to break other functionality of the kernel.

The problem was solved by installing Debian 6.0.6 (squeeze) for ppc64. It
is not just that Debian resolved the fan issue , but GNOME desktop
environment works visibly better on Debian. With YDL 6.2 the transitions of
open windows, dragging them on the screen or closing them, were not smooth.

Too bad support for YDL was discontinued. One of the reason I wanted to
try YDL was because of Y-HPC. It looks like this product was dropped as
well. Does any know what happened to it?

I've read that IBM and RedHat work together to bring Fedora, and by
extension RedHat, on PowerPPC architecture. I just installed successfully
IBM Java 7 on my G5. Hopefully this collaboration could revive the interest
in YDL.

Thank you all for your help!

G5 releases from YDL. I had YDL6 (6.1 I *think*) on it last and it was
ok. The initial releases when the G5 first came out had zero fan control,
and the box might have taken off given wings and wheels.

will quiet the fans down. You can put it in /etc/sysctl.conf to preserve
the setting across boots.

Hi Dimitar!

As you may know YDL was originally created by Terra Soft Solutions
(TSS), which was absorbed or bought by Fixstars. Long story short,
provided great support for all versions of YDL, which was continued by
Fixstars, for some years. Official support for YDL ended quite some
years ago (at least 8).

You can still find however their support notes and advisories. I'm
going to share the link addressing your particular problem. The
difficulty you may face is that the last release for YDL for any
PowerPC system was YDL 6.2.

The "fix" created to address the fan problem was designed for YDL 4.1
which required the use of a specifically designed kernel (the link is
provided in the explanation) your problem will be - does the link still
work and does the kernel TSS produced still exist!

Unfortunately, I am not running YDL on a G5, I run YDL 6.2 from a
Powerbook. So other than providing the link to this reference
material I cannot help you further. Feel free however to reference
the other links and re

What you're describing is the fan running at full speed - which you can
Replicate by booting the Mac into the command line and running fsck.
There's likely a software patch that addresses this directly.

I don't recall if fan speed control was ever fully functional on the G5
tower. IIRC only Apple portables had power management facilities in the
kernel.
