We'd like to ask everyone to really give it a good kicking around to ensure we aren't introducing major regressions from 2.6.26. Dear Developers, This is a short, but pointed, reminder that Feature Freeze is scheduled for this Thursday, August 28. This means that all of your Intrepid-targeted specs should be either at Beta Available or Postponed by the end of day on Wednesday. Please make sure to update the status of your specs. You should check that packages you care about are at a version suitable for release. Requests for freeze exceptions for main should be filed as bugs in Launchpad against the relevant package (or just "Ubuntu" if the package is not available yet). Once the bug is filed and the necessary information is available, please subscribe the ubuntu-release team. For universe, the motu-release team will approve new packages and upstream version freeze exceptions between now and the Beta. I find the autofsck to be most notable on my laptop, perhaps because I reboot it more frequently, and because it usually chooses to autofsck at some inopportune time. I don't know if laptop harddrives need fsck more than desktop's, but I wouldn't mind seeing the frequency be reduced for laptops. Alternatively, maybe the autofsck could be made to take a few more factors into account, such as total run time since last fsck, total absolute time since last fsck, drive age, etc. Bryce

Hi, One of the important features we want to support in intrepid is out-of-the-box 3g support [0]. Now that Network Manager 0.7 has entered the archive, I’d like to to ask you to test your 3g hardware with it and report your findings to the 3G Hardware page on the wiki [1]. We want to hear about all results – good and bad ones. Just remember to open a bug in launchpad and link it to your result on that wiki page. How to test ------------- If you are running intrepid, you just need to apt-get upgrade to get the current network-manager 0.7. Alternatively, you can also use the Network Manager PPA [2] which usually has even more recent snapshots in it. If you are using hardy, the PPA [2] is currently the only source to track network manager 0.7 progress in ubuntu. Furthermore, the daily intrepid livecd's [3] come with NetworkManager 0.7. Hi all, The number of stable release updates sitting in -proposed is getting larger [0]. Thank you to all of you who worked on getting SRU bug fixes prepared and uploaded! Packages in -proposed are ready to be moved to -updates after one week in -proposed and 2 positive verifications (as comments in the bug report) and no negatives. This means verification is often the bottleneck and why we're asking for help. A short howto is: 1) read the SRU bug report and verify that you can reproduce the bug. Many reports should have explicit test cases you can follow. 2) install the package(s) from -proposed 3) repeat step 1 and verify that the bug is fixed 4) add both positive and negative results on the SRU bug report If you have any questions on SRU verifications please ask in #ubuntu-testing. Recently Openjdk6 was promoted to main; with today's upload of java-common, OpenJDK6 is the default java runtime / development kit in main, on all architectures. - On amd64, i386, lpia and sparc, the Hotspot VM, including the JIT compiler is used as the VM. - On ia64, the Hotspot VM, using the byte code interpreter is used. - On powerpc, the Cacao VM, including the Cacao JIT compiler is used as the VM. What will change for the packaging? - Use of the default-jre-headless, default-jre, default-jdk, default-jdk-builddep packages is preferred in favour of a specific runtime/jdk. The packages provide a symlink /usr/lib/jvm/default-java to point to our preferred choice of jvm/sdk. - build dependencies: If a source package builds a "-gcj" package, don't stop building it yet. This will slow down the gij runtime. Instead, use "default-jdk-builddep", which depends on the default jdk and java-gcj-compat-dev. If no "-gcj" package is built, use default-jdk as a build dependency. -

This means that developers are asked to refrain from uploading packages between Tuesday and Thursday which don't bring us closer to releasing the alpha, so that these days can be used for settling the archive and fixing any remaining showstoppers.
