But I agree, we need to resolve this. In my opinion by adding an
option: these kernel versions must be in test, then we cherry-pick
patches into stable and roll out chroot/ISO along with some notice or
even warning in /etc/motd (for example) for those owning such cards to

Hey there,

We're coming closer to the stable-0.61 Grimoire release, so here's some
middle-work, that helps us to test 0.60 -> 0.61 upgrade process.

This release has a lot of updates (since it's based on stable-rc 0.61
Grimoire, which was renewed and cut a week ago) as well as Kernel update
to 3.0.31.

The most visible changes:

* GCC 4.6.3
* Kernel 3.0.31 (latest LTS)
* Sorcery 1.15.1 (unchanged though, just FYI)

* dropped spells:
o fping
o g++ (the spell itself no longer needed, gcc spell provides C++
functionality)
o glib2 (nothing in basesystem depends on glib2, and recent glib2
requires Python installed)
o p7zip (no longer needed for metalog -- replaced by xz, which is
included in basesystem)
o vim (replaced by powerful and yet minimal vi clone -- elvis)

* new spells:
o elvis
o ntfs-3g (adds NTFS support)
o gdisk (adds fdisk with GPT support and other nice tools)
o popt (required by gdisk)
o minicom (useful tool for playing with COM when you set up BIOS
console redirection, etc. Also inspir

Hi everyone,

stable-rc 0.61 is REcut and ready for testing again.

Since we have new up-to-date chroot images now, the process of testing
an upgrade from 0.60 to 0.61 should go smoothly.

The release target is *June 15th*. It will take a bit more time than
usually, cause we had a notable pause from previous stable release.

The tarballs have been signed and uploaded to our server and will be
propogating out to the mirrors within six hours.

To download the grimoire manually, get
http://codex.sourcemage.org/stable-rc.tar.bz2 or specifically
http://codex.sourcemage.org/stable-rc-0.61.tar.bz2 .

GPG signatures are available at
http://codex.sourcemage.org/stable-rc.tar.bz2.asc or
http://codex.sourcemage.org/stable-rc-0.61.tar.bz2.asc .

As always don't forget to file any bugs against our issue tracker[0] so
we can resolve them and integrate the fixes before release. New version
'0.61-rc' is still there, so use it when submitting the bugs.

Let's give this new stable-rc a good testing!

Hello, Valley!

So here it comes. Finally I got finished this work, and this is it.

New polished chroot images for both architectures -- i686 and x86_64
with all essential programs on them to make SMGL installations a bit
easier on modern hardware :)

Kernel version (as per 0.60-stable grimoire) is *3.0.0*.

The most low-level stuff (usually RAID controllers, HDD and file
subsystems) is compiled-in, the rest is available in modules (>2500),
so it should boot almost everywhere now.

Every spell is compiled from scratch with generic optimizations (no
extra flags and specific arch specs) for both architectures
respectively.

The contents is based on our current cauldron ISO's spell-list[0] plus
our preferences discussed here and on IRC plus some user advices plus my
own experience during the last years of Source Mage' [con|dis]tribution.

No extra stuff (like ten text editors), but we should discuss and fix
this spell-list for the next chroot image, which will be based on
0.61-stable grimoire, I believe.

stable-rc 0.61 is REcut and ready for testing. It's REcut, cause during

better idea is to merge our current work in test and refresh release

Sorcery 1.15.0 Released!

Sorcery 1.15.0 has finally been released! Yep, check the date. A long time has
passed since the inception, so the changelog is long and full of bugfixes,
optimisations and new features. Thanks to all involved!

The release notes are worst viewed on the wiki at
http://sourcemage.org/projects/sorcery/wiki/ReleaseNotes1150

Here are just the big highlights:
* sorcery queue and queue-security are now much faster by avoiding disk IO
(~10 times in my case) and optionally (default: VERBOSE_QUEUING=on) more
verbose. It displays all the reasons why the particular spell is being put
into the queue. For security updates it states if there was more than one.
    * as a side effect, also cast -Z is much faster when searching for possible
updates (look it up, it is very handy)
* partly improved resurrect: better resurrection and its integration into the
casting process
    * a new tool (called resurrect) specifically for dealing with resurrecting
(downgrades, upgrades, cache manipulation)
* timing functionality.
