I did a proper upgrade from 13.37 to 14.0 which includes the latest
release of stable slackpkg. But, the mirrors list is only for 13.37, 13.1,
and current.

I probably missed this one. Thank you for pointing this out to me. Will
ensure that all new config files are in place.

Well for one, the slackpkg file should *already* have all the mirrors
for 14.0 in it. That is if you 1) upgraded properly and to 14.0 as per
your initial e-mail.

I think the problem is you either never moved the .new file over or
just removed it as you wanted to stick either with whatever old version
you had or set it to -current. However looking at my own system (and at
the local mirror I keep); slackpkg will not have been the problem
except for the errors you put in.

However, make sure you are running the same version as the install

definitely not work if you put the x64 version on i386 system or vice versa.

Hi Rich,

To prevent this from happening in the future:
Edit /etc/slackpkg/blacklist with your favourite editor
Add the following to the file:

    # The gcc compiler suite:
    gcc
    gcc-g++
    gcc-gfortran
    gcc-gnat
    gcc-java
    gcc-objc

    # The GNU libc libraries:
    glibc
    glibc-i18n
    glibc-profile
    glibc-solibs
    glibc-zoneinfo
    glibc-debug

# kernel-ide
kernel-modules
kernel-source
kernel-headers
kernel-firmware
kernel-generic
kernel-huge

This will prevent update-all from updating these libraries. You can
upgrade them individually.

Best,

John

Before I begin I would like to have one point clarified. Toward the bottom
of the HOWTO I read,

"Note: there are some other packages that might need to be upgraded
(downgraded, actually) while you're here; I'm not even going to
attempt to list them, but for example, if you had already upgraded
bash with the package from the newer Slackware version, you probably
need to do the same thing as above with the a/bash-*.tgz package on
 the cdrom."

Careful reading of this suggests it is applicable to someone who borks
glibc during a distribution upgrade, not to a working 14.0 which needs to
have 14.0 glibc restored. Is this correct?

Jason,

Yes, it is a one-off. I sucessfully ran slackpkg updates on the Sony Vaio
before yesterday and on the other hosts on the LAN. The OSUOSL is only a
couple of hours down the Interstate from me so I use it for all the FOSS
applications they host there.

I just read Robby's glibc HOWTO and will follow his instructions later
this morning. As a non-computer-professional user I can often fix things my
self based on years of use, but sometimes it's a brand-new situation and
this mail list always comes through.

Regards,

Rich

'slackpkg upgrade-all' and the screen went crazy with text scrolling by too
rapidly to read. This behavior is because libc.so.6 somehow was lost(!) and
everything depends on its presence ... including mount to try to restore
that package from the distribution DVD. Never in the 15 years I've run linux
has this happened to me. I'm well beyond my experience base and knowledge of
how to proceed.

I've no idea what might have happened or why but do need to learn what I
need to do to restore the system to full working condition.
