As well as "real" work, I'm half using it as a todo list, but also as a
place such that people don't complain later that "xyz was not discussed"
etc. should someone take issue with any of the changes - it's a nice
safety net to have!

I'd also like to spend some time on infrastructural things this cycle,
including doing git migration for soft (along with Neoclust) and also
doing some investigation as to how hard a packages git migration would be.

I'd also really like to put some time into systems to help automate the
QA testing procedure (e.g. public voting/ACKing of updates with the
possibility of automatic pushes for non-security updates etc). and also
a system to track freeze push requests for when that comes around with a
nice web UI to view/approve by those with power.

All of these are very hand-wavey and not overly defined and thus I've
not written them up yet as "features" but just so people know I figured
I'd write them here w

Few things I am considering:
- Fixing all packages that randomly fail parallel build (including
some docmentation about it)
- Removing before mageia4 any package that hasn't been rebuilt since
mageia2 (maybe mageia3 if we are good enough :) )

The icon is blue, instead of red, but the procedure is still pretty much
the same as it was with the upgrade from Mageia 1 to 2. It is now a little
more complicated though, as the first package that gets installed is
mageia-prepare-upgrade, after which it's necessary to reboot the system,
and select the prepare-upgrade stanza from the boot loader.

Anyone maintaining a system for other people who should not upgrade should
ensure they set
DO_NOT_ASK_FOR_DISTRO_UPGRADE=true
in /etc/sysconfig/mgaapplet.

Dear fellow packagers,

It is time to refresh our apprenticeship program and start again with
the new volunteers we have. I would like to make some changes to the
program, notably to help apprentices graduate a bit more successfully.

I just sent a mail to the current apprentices (please write to me if you
didn't receive mail from me today) to ask them for some feedback.

From you, fellow mentors, it would be great if you could have a look at
the names of current apprentices at
https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Becoming_a_Mageia_Packager
Please erase the apprentices that you haven't seen in a while.
Please erase yourself if you don't feel like supervising anyone anymore.

Now, we need to think about improving the process. The current situation
is not so good, with very few apprentices graduating, and many
apprenticeship not progressing because of the absence of either the
mentor or the padawan. Also, candidates wait waaaaaayyyy too long for a
mentor.

I am therefore open to suggestions. My current thoughts

I saw last updates coming for Mageia2 concerning urpmi dracut mgaonline
and mageia-prepare-upgrade...

I'm wondering if this implies that the "upgrade" option will be proposed
to everybody through mgaonline ...

I have a bad remembering of an upgrade option of mdkonline that induced
big problems to my old mother's computer ( Mandriva 2008.1 to 2009 ?):
eighty years old, French speaking, she didn't really understood the
difference between update and upgrade and clicked the blue button
(without having noticed it was not red as usual...)

not enough free space on the hard disk, slow internet => everything was
distroyed by an aborted upgrade... I had to reinstall the old version
and to suppress the upgrade option :
modifying the file /etc/sysconfig/mdkapplet by changing the value false
to true variable for the line "DO_NOT_ASK_FOR_DISTRO_UPGRADE".

Will there be a clear distingo between updating Mageia2 (still
maintained) or upgrading to Mageia3 (through internet ... which is not
affordable for lots of people)

The reboot command *is* in the systemd package in Mageia 3. It uses polkit

package and used a different method to determine privileges.

Turns out that "reboot" had been given the heave-ho by POSIX several
years back, and the command technically shouldn't have been there.
Several distros have not dropped it.

The official "old" way to do it is with "shutdown -r", but the newer
systemd way to do it is "systemctl reboot".
