<pre>Thanks for that.

Compiling in HID support (usbhid) solved the problem of not being able to
enter anything at the login: prompt but login still hung.

After a period of considering whither to reformat and go back to Gentoo, I
noticed that the /etc/login.defs was expecting a /etc/securetty
file which did not exist.

# If defined, either full pathname of a file containing device names or
# a ":" delimited list of device names. Root logins will be allowed only
# upon these devices.
#
CONSOLE /etc/securetty
#CONSOLE console:tty01:tty02:tty03:tty04

uncommenting the list didn't work ( tty01 ?) but copying a /etc/securetty
file from the host Arch setup did.

Now it seems to work

Thanks again

<pre>Double check that USB support (including HID device support) is compiled
into your kernel as built ins, not as modules. If they aren't, rebuild
your kernel with them compiled in.

That's what I'd check first anyway...

<pre>Hi,

Just completed CLFS Multilib build using Version 1.2.0 book without any
major problems in the chroot environment.
Copied the new kernel to a pre-existing /boot partition and modified
menu.lst to boot with per-existing grub.
The kernel appears to load but the bootscripts initially failed with a
checkfs error '..Press Enter to Continue'.

Pressing Enter does nothing.

After removing the fsck option from fstab the boot scripts run without
error to the login prompt but I can't enter a
username; the keyboard appears not to be responding. The only thing that
works is the reboot button.

The syslog file is written and looks ok; the only reference to keyboards is

            kernel: [ 1.561827] serio: i8042 KBD port at 0x60,0x64 irq 1

and the only errors are

I get this every time I try on Debian 6 stable, x86_64, compiling '
eglibc-2.13 ' . Attempt 7+ ? Found no workaround for this.

Tried using glibc-2.14.1 as in the link above and the ' -Wl,--as-needed

Sorry, my machine seg faulted and the exact error [ elf/? ] got lost
before I could save it.

Reference Link : https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/User:Allan/Toolchain

Used the ' --with-binutils=PATH ' set, ' AS_FOR_TARGET= ' , '
LD_FOR_TARGET= ' switches. Still got the error. Used the
'glibc-2.14.1-cpuid-1.patch' I found on LFS / CLFS ftp as well.

This did show in the compiler output after ' --with-binutils=PATH ' was
specified : " -Wl,--no-as-needed -lgcc -Wl,--as-needed -lgcc_s
-Wl,--no-as-needed `gcc -B/tools/bin "

<pre>I built a x86_64 pure64 using the 'bootable' (i.e. not the chroot)
method. When I booted the temporary system up, it came up and gave
me a login prompt and I typed root but it wouldn't give me a shell
prompt. After a few seconds I got another login prompt but couldn't
get it to log me in.

Has anyone else tried this and it worked? I'm trying to figure out
if I did something wrong....

To get around it I modified inittab for single mode run level and got
a prompt that way and was able to finish chapter 10 ok...

I have encountered the same failure. Updating to yaboot-1.3.17 seems
to fix it. 3.17 builds anyway (although you have to shut off Werror
in the Makefile because of a warning.)

I haven't actually tried running it so can't vouch for the new version
in that respect but it does fix the compile error.

That would be sysroot showing its age (last real update was in 2009).
The version of GCC in sysroot doesn't need MPC but newer GCCs do. I
think GCC 4.5 was the first to require MPC.

<pre>
Yes, I understand that these libraries are all built for and running on
the host system. I probably should have been more clear; I meant to ask
how I can make CLooG-parma search the cross-tools directory instead of /usr.

CLFS-Sysroot actually never mentions MPC, which I did find odd since
it's built for GCC in LFS. I'll add it to my procedure, thanks.

Looking at GCC's installation documentation [1], it seems CLooG and PPL
are optional and only needed to build with Graphite [2] loop memory
optimizations. It also seems I should be using regular CLooG instead of
CLooG-parma. I'll try building regular CLooG, but if that doesn't work
(which is probable) I'll just build the cross-compiling GCC without PPL
and CLooG.

2: http://gcc.gnu.org/wiki/Graphite

My time is rather limited, but if I can I will. :)
