    <link>http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.emacs.auctex.bugs/1484</link>
    <description>Hello!

When I try to create previews from the enumeration in the first
section of preview/circ.tex I succeed only when the LaTeX buffer is
in DVI mode, but I fail when in PDF mode. This happens with the Cocoa/
GNUSTEP variant Emacs.app on Mac OS X 10.4.11 (Tiger) with an
unmodified TeX Live 2008 distribution. There is (mostly, i.e., it
sometimes fails, too) *no* difference when I use the X client version
from the same code basis, i.e., the previews are created successfully
in DVI and in PDF mode.

The X client version (until now) always was able to create previews
in preview/circ.tex when I had added tracingall to the options when
loading preview. Otherwise it could (often) fail. In Emacs.app it
always failed.

Caching of the preamble was always off, process-connection-type is t.
When working continuously at the same time with both Emacsen, preview
detected that _region_.tex had changed on disk and re-read that file.
The auxiliary (static) dvipng programme is:

Using 11.85-3, the following file:

one {\em two

shows " two" underlined but the underline goes all the way to the edge
of the buffer, and then continues on the next line to the end of the

Attached is a screenshot. I also uploaded it here for now in case

Well, basically the detection of the file type by looking at macros is a
bottomless pit, but since looking for \subsection and \subsubsection in
addition to \section does not impose a big penalty on performance I've
added those.

I'm sorry, I thought you meant there should be a Command sub-menu or
menu item specific for AUCTeX. I didn't realize everything in Command
was AUCTeX specific, or I thought a Command menu existed normally, or I
don't even know what I thought. Something illogical, but I guess I
rarely use menus. Mea culpa for not reading closely.

Looking at the manual and seeing it applies to TeXinfo too which I do
edit occasionally, this makes sense for me personally also.

Perhaps, getting down to the supposed "bug" here, it would be possible
to make \subsection be such a string. After all, if \section is such a
string, presumably there's an argument for \subsection being derived
from it and inheriting many of its properties/connotations/whatever.
(Of course the same would apply to other section headers too.)

Ah, I remember these guys from some past life. Now I know what they do!

Thanks for your help,
Chris

TeX mode and LaTeX mode.

Wow, you make me jump through hoops. I had to switch to a Linux console
to see what you mean because the GTK port behaves differently. So I
guess I can confirm it. But couldn't you just have said "Yes, there is
a menu called 'Command'"?

You shouldn't have to. It's the default.

This was just an example demonstrating that forcing LaTeX mode under
every circumstance is not a good idea.

Okay, I now actually checked with a file as you provided it (shame on me
for not doing so before) and yes, it falls back to Plain TeX mode
because there is no string which is recognized by AUCTeX identifying the
file as being a LaTeX file.

You have two options dealing with the problem:

1) Set `TeX-force-default-mode' to t.

This will disable the automatic file type recognition and always use
the mode specified in `TeX-default-mode'. However, I don't recommend
this because it will disable a useful feature and is usually not
necessary because there is option 2.

2) Set the varia</description>

Yes, sorry. I'm unfamiliar with formal emacs terms. What are the
actual TeX/LaTeX modes called?

I don't see a specific AUCTeX menu, but "F10 l" gives me a LaTeX menu if
it says "section" instead of "subsection" in the file, and "F10 T" gives
me a TeX menu if it says "subsection" as written above. Furthermore,
"F10 c l" runs LaTeX and "F10 c t" runs TeX correspondingly. Can you
confirm this?

Not that I know of. I looked through my .emacs and didn't see anything.
How do I set TeX-default-mode to be LaTeX?

I've never used ConTeXt, presumably I can start caring if/when. Of
course, the archives might benefit from a more general solution if there
actually is one.

Why do I care about this? I break large documents into several files
and \input them from the master document file, and so sometimes I end up
having a single subsection in a file.

Thanks for your help,
Chris

There are no such modes as "TeX Fill mode" and "LaTeX Fill mode". Do
you perhaps refer to the modeline indicator?

Hard to say without more information. Are you sure AUCTeX is enabled?
There should be a Command menu if it is.

Not really, at least not with respect to macros used in the document.
If AUCTeX cannot derive the mode from the document contents it should
fall back to the mode given by `TeX-default-mode'. Perhaps you changed
that?

Even for ConTeXt files?

Now I see that the problem cannot be solved.

But here I want to express my complain for the fact that plain TeX is always
neglected compared to LaTeX. I don't find that right. After all, D. Knuth has
written plain TeX and not LaTeX. Plain TeX users are helpless with their
problems. I wish I had the skills to fix them myself but unfortunately
haven't, but expert people should not in my opinion create facilities only and
only for LaTeX, which is a mere sun of plain TeX. I understand that this
happens because so many people use LaTeX and so few people use plain TeX, but
this reason is not sufficient IMHO.

In case of the preceding text it is easy to find the paragraph boundary
because there is a line starting with $$. Determination of paragraph
starts or separators usually works by looking at the start of a line.
In AUCTeX there is also code that looks at the end of a line, but this
is only used in LaTeX mode. Plain TeX mode relies on Emacs facilities
for filling.
