That way, if we get an item from three different sources, the user can decide whether to (for instance) pick the link to SpringerLink or the one to Wiley.

But for our internal purposes, we use a local 910 field. Whenever we load a set of ebook records, we add a 910 field with the name of the vendor and the date. If we get a particular item from multiple vendors, it will contain multiple 910 fields. We keep track of these loads in a spreadsheet. This allows us to easily create a list of all records from a specific batch load, or all records from a particular vendor. And if we come across an ebook record, we can tell from the 910 which data load it came in. This helps if we discover there was a problem with a specific load. Also, some of our record sources do not provide incremental loads, or provide lists of deleted records. This allows us to do a fresh load overl</pre>

one reality or the other.

The LCRI using the print record with a 533 can cause confusion between
the two records, but following AACR2, LAC or RDA in cataloguing what
you have makes the distinction clear. Has CONSER not come around to
the PCC conclusion about this? Surely they will for RDA.

The only exception we make to having a record for each genre (print,
micro, electronic) is when a single lost print issue or volume is
replaced with another genre, and a joint holdings record is wanted.
In that case we omit the GMD, and put a note in 590 and the holdings
record.

<pre>John and Kevin touch on key points in the 20th-century history of
cataloging and Library Systems. I feel that these points are key as we
go through the evolution of discovery, and changes in metadata and
discovery software. In my work, I experience the legacy of these two
themes nearly every day.

-1-Library Systems have had small or enormous shortcomings--vendors (and
here I include OCLC along with the rest of them) make decisions about
what they'll develop and support. Some would consider that 'normal
business practices', but this has had a deep impact on our experience
with MARC and the various editions of AACR. So many things did not work,
were not done, were 'worked around', simply because the software did
not/could not/would not. We were hobbled. Some critics of MARC/AACR
have potent observations, but some criticisms were entirely misdirected.
Tragically, most software systems carried only part of the brunt of
their criticism. The metadata schemes and transport schemes were
accused of crimes, and </pre>

the way it is defined.

I have been using multiple links with |z as follows:

|zView ebook from EBSCOhost eBook Collection|uhttp//...
|zView ebook from Literature Online|uhttp://...
|zView ebook from Credo Reference|uhttp://...

But I need a different field to use to keep track of things like whether
we purchased it or got it free, which consortium we got it from, whether
we own it or the consortium owns it, etc. I guess |x could be used. I
would still like to have a different field that is repeatable to use for
this data rather than tacking it on to a big long 856 field.

<pre>If using the provider-neutral approach, you would have multiple links on the same record. The Provider-Neutral E-Monograph MARC Record Guide instructs us to us the 856 $3 for the provider name "if deemed necessary." I would prefer a different 856 subfield. The 856 $3 is labeled "materials specified," which is defined as "part of the described material to which the field applies" in both the MARC Standards and in Bib. Formats. For this reason, I don't think the provider name fits in $3. However, WorldCat records are now using $3 in e-monograph records for labeling links with the providers' names.

The provider-neutral guidelines for serials specify $3 for coverage info and show examples of long phrases that include provider name in $z. The provider-neutral guidelines for integrating resources say that the provider name may optionally be given in $z. The OLAC streaming media best practices, which do not seem to address provider-neutral issues, do show examples with the provider name in $z. The 856 $z i</pre>

<pre>I've been getting ebook records from OCLC so far. My question is, what happens when the same e-book is provided by different vendors. I assume you'd want them on the same e-book record? If they are on the same record, how do you identify vendors to facilitate removal or vendor name change (Netlibrary now owned by EBSCO)? For now I'm including the vendor name in the call number rather than on the record itself.

We have used a local note field for our consortium e-book acquisitions.
Our other e-products have sufficient vendor markers in them to identify
the means of acquisition. Speaking of which, field 541 (Immediate Source
of Acquisition) may prove amenable: 541 $a [vendor] $c [consortial
purchase/package X/etc.].

Granted, both of these solutions employ bibliographic record fields for
what is essentially item or order level information. I assume however

<pre>There is no one answer. A growing number of institutions are following the two-record approach, but many support the single record approach. I suspect the two-record approach may now be the majority opinion for best practices, but I have no actual evidence. And even some institutions which think two-record approach would be the best practice still use single-record approach for various reasons, including the difficulties of changing all the existing records. The single record approach probably looks better in most current OPACs and is less initial work for catalogers, but certain workflow and maintenance procedures work better with the two-record approach. If you get your serials records from an external knowledgebase, either local or a commercial service such as Serials Solutions, you are essentially forced to use a two-record approach. I am told that CONSER has not recommended one approach over the other. Thus you will find records on OCLC done both ways.

<pre>I would also do separate (easier to remove) but I can see where it can be confusing especially for serials with multiple title changes. And given that all serials will probably eventually be electronic, the one identifying term issue may go away.

I am afraid I have no real answers. What you need for patrons, and what you need for record keeping can be in conflict.
Patrons tend to prefer one record, depending on the flexibility of the list displays. If your brief or list display can only display one word or icon for the type (electronic, or print) then a single record can be confusing.

For record keeping, and tracking your materials, 2 records are much easier to deal with, particularly if you are trying to batch load sets of records. Online materials need alot more tweaking and fussing with, so having separate records for them makes batch work easier.

<pre>If you have a subscription to the print and the online versions, do you
bring down two records into the catalog.

Two things occur to me. The uniform title is different for each.
Secondly, if the patron only goes to the electronic link in the 856 for
print version, perhaps, he/she will not know we have it in print.

What is best practices here?
