Birth date is 1761 or 1762. Death date is 1835.

I agree that this isn't the easiest format to understand, but it's what we have. I vaguely recall that it is based on how you would *say* the birth date (or how whatever group decided on the format would have said it, whenever that was).

Can anyone tell me what the "or 2-1835" might signify in this authority

OCLC's Connexion divides the 007 field into subfields rather than
employing a mnemonic display as found with other cataloging applications.

One such example from OCLC's website:

way apposed to just conding it?

Helen quoted an earlier post:

As my Granny said of purchasing shoes, you get what you pay for.

For well over half our customers the records they get from us are of
higher quality than locally produced records in their catalogues,
given the level of cataloguing skills of current library school
graduates, and non catalogues being forced into doing cataloguing.

We stopped doing shelf ready books years ago (because of international
shipping difficulties), but I would compare our records, and those
from Cassidy Cataloguing, or Quality Books, with anyone's.

Marcive does a thriving business cleaning up local messes.

The proposition that locally done records are always better does not
hold up. Local libraries vary as much as vendors in the quality of
the records they produce. If a library is not willing to pay for a
well trained local catalogue, or high quality vendor records, they are
going to have poor records.

Hello AUTOCAT Collective Wisdom,

I have been asked to investigate the technology used with
manifestations
including "MP with OLC card" such as in the following advertisement:
http://www.amazon.com/International-Management-Culture-Strategy-Behavior/dp/0073135852/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1228320116&sr=8-1

I have also seen titles listed "with bound-in OLC card".

Does anyone know about this technology? I have Googled, Yahooed, and
Wikipediaed without success.

Thanks in advance,
Robert

Typo of the Day for Librarians
Heath (for Health)

Chocolate contains a lot of antioxidants, flavonoids, and other healthful components, and the Heath bar was initially sold as virtual health food, with one early ad declaring: "Eat Heath for health!" The wrapper design remains basically unchanged from the 1928 original and may be indulging in a bit of subliminal advertising to boot. According to Wikipedia, it has "the name 'Heath' printed in a distinctive fashion: two very large H's bookending eat." Depending on how you formulate your search, results will vary, but this is definitely a typo of high probability. The problem is that Heath is also a relatively common surname, in addition to being an actual word that means moor or shrub, i.e. "heather." If you're getting too many hits on Heath + Health, try to limit your search in such a way as to exclude Heath in the personal name field. (Searched that way, I got 191 results; without the exclusion, 377.)

(Heath bar, from Wikimedia Commons.)

Hi. The concepts and legal status of policy are wrong, and both the policy and the FAQ should be scrapped and rewritten by OCLC and members as a voluntary guideline, not a legal document. I, too, can't figure out all the future ramifications with it. I can't figure out how this new legal policy, as OCLC staff wrote it, can be fixed -- it is just too hard to understand, and to see all its future effects.

So, that's why I wrote the petition which states that OCLC should scrap both the new policy and the FAQ, and start entirely over with OCLC members and others to write a guideline. If you don't understand these documents, which seems to be true, you are like me, and probably many others. This is why they should be scrapped, and rewritten as something we CAN understand and feel truly best benefits our institutions and our records, in the present and the future. The petition is at:

Peter Ward authority deletions

I have recently and suddenly taken over processing the Peter Ward authority files for our library and find myself with some questions.

I am hoping that someone who does this routinely at their library would be willing to answer a few questions for me. Actually right now I have just one main question, but every so often I seem to find something else that stumps me. Yesterday I began working through a few weeks of the deletions report. I understand those records that clearly say they are to be deleted because they were distributed inadvertently or that they are being replaced by name headings and such. But I'm confused by some other records.

In front of me I have SUBJECT headings for CEA genes and the Carrot weevil that appear to match both OCLC and headings already in our database. I can't tell precisely what I'm supposed to do with these.

If anyone can tell me what to look for when processing this type of authority record I would appreciate it. Also -- if anyone has written out a set of steps

Re: New OCLC records policy - is there "for dummies" version?

I agree with Mac's view on this, except I'm not sure about the "required" aspect of including a field to identify records obtained via OCLC. I think it's optional. To me, this is where the workload issue (Tim Spalding commented on this, I think it was) of having to include data in the record for no good reason. Making it optional (for now of course) relieved some of the dislike of the policy. Why have that indetifier? For branding pusposes, I'd guess. As if OCLC should be worried that folks will forget it exists in the bibliographic world. (Beyond the bib world, who gives a ...?)

The other issue is that of intellectual property - - perhaps not rights or ownership, but respect and acknowledgment. OCLC doesn't create the records, for the most part, that are in WorldCat. We all do to varying extents. There's something galling about this branding of OCLC into the actual bib record data that we create. I hven't re-read the policy for a couple of weeks. I found it troubling, as I usually do, when some

Are you interested in the concept of FOLKSONOMY? What role do you think
FOLKSONOMY will play in the library science domain? Do you want to know more
about it? Have you applied FOLKSONOMY concepts in the library and would like
to share your experience with other colleagues? ... If you are interested in

Survey on technology skills in libraries

Please pardon repeated posts.

For a book that I am writing on technologies used in libraries, I am hoping to assemble a list of the most common technologies and/or technology skills used on a regular basis by librarians and library staff members. I ask you to help me in this effort by taking a brief web survey on the technologies and technology skills you use in your everyday work. I am very interested in hearing from librarians and library staff members from various types and sizes of libraries.

The survey is available at https://survey.muohio.edu/Checkbox/libtech.survey It should take about five minutes to complete. Survey respondents will have the opportunity to receive a summary of the survey results. All replies to the survey are anonymous.

Please complete the survey before December 16, 2008. Thank you very much for your participation!
