No problem at all with the generator. We were 2 sculptors working at the same time on different projects and even at high revs there was no problem and we ran the generator for at least 4 hours non stop twice a day

interested, there is an online jade carving symposium followed by a tour

the artists careers, as i know personally, it is a real challenge.

<pre>Hi All,
Check out this link to my website to see the evolution of a large sculpture in Gabbro, completed yesterday 24th May after two days of 8 hours each.

http://www.sculpturejeffwatson.com/gallery.html

Scroll down through the sculpture photos until you come to "Oeuvres Monumentales" there you will see "Sentier Art et Nature Trail"…20 photos illustrate the evolution of the work.
The sculpture is part of an Art sand Nature trail in the small village of Saint-Hippolyte in the Laurentians region of Québec just one hour's drive North from Montréal.
The work is about 165 cm high and wide and is carved from Gabbro which is a plutonic version of Basalt.
I was given small grant to contribute to the Art and Nature trail because I will be the invited artist at a symposium in Saint-Hippolyte "MontagneArt" 17th to 19th August this year.

Comments/critiques welcome

<pre>Jeff,

The alabaster might have adsorbed a little water but that is not the
cause of the rough surface. Alabaster is a form of gypsum that has
water included in its chemical formula. If it loses the water in nature
it turns into anhydrite. Gypsum is ground up and heated to drive off
the water to make plaster.

Your water bath selectively dissolved some of the stone based on
crystal orientation and trace impurities, leaving an irregular surface.
Alabaster left to the elements can lose an eighth of an inch of surface
in a year by being weathered away.

<pre>The analogy with wood does not work, as alabaster will not shrink again when it dries. As others have said, alabaster is very absorbent. Its structure is weak (which is why it bruises so easily) and if you overuse water while polishing you can find that edges simply break away. Leaving the stone in water will just mean you have extra work to do to get a polish.

<pre>Hey Jeff,
Alabaster is slightly soluble in water - what stonedyker said is correct.

You lost some surface and the 'roughness' is the less-soluble inclusions in
the more soluble matrix.
Keep it outdoors and/or exposed to water and you will discover some
wonderful textures, but at the expense of any polishing/sanding you have
done to the surface.

I have left pieces outdoors in the Southeastern US (Georgia) for a couple
of years and perhaps about a quarter-of-an-inch per year erodes-away from
Colorado white, Oklahoma pink, an unknown brown, and Italian 'occhio di
tigre' and 'bardiglio' alabasters. Any cracks or fissures in the stone are
enlarged by the water erosion too.

Stone Folks-
I have a question about alabaster that your collective wisdom may have an answer for. I inadvertently left a small piece of polished alabaster in water for a couple of days and it came out with a rough surface, as if it had absorbed the water (like the wood I carved in the old days) and this had raised the grain of the stone. So I'm wondering if this might be a way to raise the "grain" of some varieties of stone (alabaster in particular) to aid in the sanding process. As an old wood carver, I used to do this intentionally.

Any insights would be appreciated.

<pre>nice work, Frank -
and I like the concept of the sideways thing -

but if I didn't know you from posts on other lists, I wouldn't take the time to let the whole thing load - it took a full four minutes.

I think it would really help if you had a static home page that people could come to where they could see what's up -

like, a short rundown on the work with an image - maybe that one of you.

and links on that home page to an About You page, a Contact page, A bio page, an Artist Statement page, a Gallery page or pages -

you'd have your sideways scrolling thing on the Gallery page - and let them know it takes a while for all the images to load.

the first image you have of you is a really nice shot - I'm wondering if your images are at 72 dpi - they usually load faster at 72 - altho having them all load at once is the slower=downer.

Another option might be to have several galleries where the sideways scroll has less images - like, your studies, your heads, etc.

just a few thoughts - nice job, and I h</pre>
