For encouraging use of new technologies, this is a good idea. I think
the best places to do something like this is is probably in conjunction
with user group meetings or broadly targeted conferences where there

unfortunately we have to wait some time for my feedback on Deco,
because I am in other projects now. But...

The story of creating a new User-Group Session Format

Origin

Last time we had a local user group meeting in december, Timo
Stollenwerk did a great wrapup of the Plone Conf input onthe state of
Plone and the future roadmap. We showed my running deco buildout to
give the audience a live feeling of Deco and Dexterity.

Both are much more TTW content creation than developers want to mention.

The idea

Some days after the meeting Jan Ulrich Hasecke and I took the time to
reflect the format of our meetings and how we can improve the
experience and take our community further.

I had the idea to make coworking sessions similar to sprints, but not
focused on the development, but more aiming at finishing the real
world tasks of integrators setting up sites but now also doing this
side by side in a coworking session. This should not be compareable
with barcamps nor learning ca</pre>

A common branding for local usergroups should be a good starting point

<pre>Folks,

Ahem. I'd like to move this conversation forward a bit since it seems to
have stalled. ;-)

As you may recall, I objected to the board's recent rejection of my request
to "fund our meetup" (
http://lists.plone.org/pipermail/membership/2010-July/001195.html).

(Of course, that objection was more about process then the actual issue, but
now back to the issue.)

Since then, I've had time to reflect and this is what I see:

- The board outwardly cites a "tight budget" as the reason they can't help.
- Folks like Liz Leddy and Mark Corum are "working on" the board to get them
 to cover meetup costs.

So, my request now is two-fold:

- Liz and Mark, can you detail your efforts here (or would you prefer to
have them remain private for some reason)?
- I'd like to ask the board to consider ZPUGDC's request for meetup.com
expense coverage and I can provide any amount of justification as
 may (and should) be required.

To the folks who cited my request as "way off the mark", I respectfully
disagree:
- Our </pre>

Can you explain why? I mean, this is the essence of user group support isn't
it?

User groups gather frequently because they professionally use software, and
they want to get better using it and they want their software to get better.

Corporations (and individuals) fund user group efforts because they want the
best people to know about them.

The Plone Foundation is a non-profit corporation, whose purpose is to
promote (and protect) the Plone software (which is not that unlike a for
profit corporation doing the same thing e.g. Zenoss).

If the Plone Foundation is being true to its mission, would it not b</pre>

<pre>Folks,

I want to open a discussion on the following subject and would appreciate
your feedback.

First, read this thread:
http://lists.plone.org/pipermail/membership/2010-July/001195.html. Second,
tell me what you think about it. :-)

I'm generally under the impression that software foundations exist to
promote the software they were created to support. But I've received a "no"
from both the Zope and Plone foundations, and no reply from either the
Python or Django foundations.

Meanwhile, we continue to go above and beyond the norm to support their
software in our area. We will continue to do so regardless of their
decisions of course, and I hold absolutely no animosity toward them for
their decisions, but I am just very curious about the process.

What is it about supporting our efforts that these foundations are not
buying in to? Am I missing something obvious? What can I do better to make
them listen? ;-)

My point/question is basically this: am I that far off the mark that all
four foundations are going</pre>

The single best thing you can do IMO is to open up your group to "Python

Python-centric talks). But that's not too terribly difficult.

In our meetups, we usually start off with an around the room where we ask
people "What is your current favorite Python-based technology?"

And then folks tell us what they are working on. My "favs" are usually Plone
or Zenoss or Zope specific, but not always.

The point is, as Plone has its roots very deeply in Python, and even though
not everyone digs on Zope 2, or the ZTK, or Plone, etc., it somehow "just
works". The Plone people get to think outside the box a bit. And the Python
people get a taste of Plone. Win win.
