I have a somewhat embarrassing confession to make, which is that in the
course of a switch of email providers, I lost the administrative passwords
for the blosxom mailing lists. What this means in practice is that I can no
longer approve posts from new members. (We require the first posting from a
user to be moderated because a high fraction of such posts are spam.) I've
tried to contact Sourceforge support to regain or reset the passwords, but
they have given me no response. I'm not sure what the best course of action
is at this point. If someone were motivated, I imagine we could once again
migrate to a different mailing list provider (Google Groups?). Or, given
the extremely low traffic on the lists, we could simply accept the situation
as it stands currently and declare the lists (and blosxom?) in retirement.
Or maybe someone has a third idea.

Hi, I just wanted to let you know the issue has been resolved for me.

When using static rendering, the webserver is responsible for
assigning content type to files. I made sure it assigned "text/xml" to
RSS files, but that didn't solve the problem.

When looking at the solution I realised it was better to have smaller
chunks of data in each entry, so I re-engineered the solution to use
one entry per hour instead of per day. This dramatically cut down the
size of the RSS feed, and now I have no issues loading it into Google
Reader.

Thanks for your help!

Hi guys, thanks for the replies

Lilo:

I'm using version 2.1.2, according to the top of the file. And here's
the content type:

rss content_type text/xml; charset=$blog_encoding

Axel: I've got a custom head.html flavour that is lacking the link to
the RSS feed, but I tried to subscribe using the direct link to the
RSS feed.

Gavin: yeah, the feed file is pretty big. It's a "private" feed
though, being that it's the generated content of my Twitter feed, so I
doubt there'll be much traffic for the RSS.

There may be an issue with the way my webserver is serving the RSS
files. I'll look how the Content-Type is handled there.

Thanks for your input!

Hi Gustaf,

Your feed looks fine, although it's pretty huge - 2.5MB, and takes 23s
to download on my connection in the UK. If you want to keep it that
large you should certainly look at turning on gzip compression in your
webserver.

Your problem is that you're missing a link in your header flavour pointing
to the feed. Something like:

<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" href="http://gustaf.symbiandiaries.com/twitterblog/index.rss" title="Feed for Gustaf's Twitter blog">

That's why it's not being autodetected by Google (and probably your
browser).

Cheers,
Gavin

And I'd expect such a line to be responsible for any feed reader to
find the proper feed URL.

That line is in there since this commit from back in 2008:

So that line must be in the default HTML templates for the 2.1.0,
2.1.1 and 2.1.2 releases.

But your blog doesn't have such a link tag. Please check if your
head.html contains such a link tag. Adding it to head.html should
solve this issue.

I just whipped up a quick blog using blosxom (downloaded the latest
version from the SF site) and got it working with static rendering.
It's here http://gustaf.symbiandiaries.com/twitterblog/.

However, when I tried to enter the URL to the RSS feed, Google Reader
didn't recognise it as a valid feed.

The file http://gustaf.symbiandiaries.com/twitterblog/index.rss exists
and it has data in it.

Is this a known issue? I've got a plugin making Atom feeds on my main
site but I wanted to do it simple this time, and just use the built in
functionality.

Dear J,

Posting the contents of blog.shtml makes things clearer. Thanks.

Referring to my previous post, idea 1) (change the blog top URI) is not
possible as long as you want to use blog.shtml in its current form.

Idea 2) (using .htaccess to rewrite the URI requested by browsers) is
possible, and maybe the more elegant solution, but requires your web
server support .htaccess and you to be able to put a file (.htaccess) in
the root directory of your web site (/www/test.com/www). It will also
require a bit of study to figure out exactly what to put in .htaccess to
make the permalinks work.

Idea 3) is also possible. You just put a file called story.html in the
directory /www/test.com/www/blosxom with customized template data inside.
For example:

--- /www/test.com/www/blosxom/story.html contents: --------------------
<p>
<a name="$fn"><b>$title</b></a><br />

I set up a site (www.proximitypoetry.com) with blosxom last year and
permalinks work fine for me. I use path-based, not date-based, permalinks,
but I seem to remember date-based ones worked when I was testing. Perhaps if
you posted that part of your story.<flavour> or date.<flavour> we could see
what's going wrong.

Mine looks like

<a href="$url$path/$fn.$flavour" title="how to find this
again">permalink</a>

I'm not doing static rendering though -- maybe that's causing trouble.

As far as I recall (without actually looking at the code, mind you!) you
can't have a URL for the $datadir.

I hope this is of some use, at least in helping you think about it. I am by
no means a guru on blosxom but thought I should at least offer you some
support. This is a very quiet list -- I think a lot of people have moved on
to other CMSs.

Dear J,

My Blosxom knowledge is very rusty, but guessing your site's URI from your
e-mail address (http://www.krunky.co.uk/blog.shtml, right?) and poking
around a bit, I see you're mapping (with .htaccess?) the above URI to the
Blosxom script at cgi-bin/blosxom.cgi. However, when the URI has a CGI
query string appended at the end, like the permalink ending with
"/2010/11/15#121110", the server doesn't recognize that the URI is
intended to invoke a CGI script and instead tries to return a file
identified by the entire URI string. No such file exists on your site, to
you get the 404 error.

Note that a permalink URI that explicitly references the Blosxom script,
e.g. <http://www.klunky.co.uk/cgi-bin/blosxom.cgi/2010/11/15#121110>,
works fine.

I think you could fix the problem in one of three ways:

1) Change your blog top page URI to ".../blog.cgi".

2) Use fancier URI rewriting directives in .htaccess to allow for the
presence or absence of a query string.

3) Customize your story template (story.html) to

Blosxom is written in Perl, so blog.shtml is probably some SSI wrapper

I can imagine that not all necessary environment variables are there
within the wrapper. I'm not sure, but it's a possibility.

Kind regards, Axel

Can we see your webserver (apache?) config for blosxom too?

Can you give us some examples of links that do work on your blog?

The link format is specified in your flavour or theme files. And you
definitely can't use a URL in the $datadir, as Janet said. $datadir is
on the filesystem side, for blosxom to find your posts.

Cheers,
Gavin

Dear people,

I have used Blosxom on my website since 2004. However I never
managed to get the permalink to work. Since I have moved my site to my
own server, I and have full access, I would like to mend this.
Typically the error message is a
404: The requested URL /blog.shtml/2010/11/15 was not found on this server.
The configurable portion of the CGI is below.

One additional question : Is it possible to use the a external address
for the $data_dir in the .cgi script instead of the real path:
$datadir = "http://test.com/www/blosxom";
verses
$datadir = "/www/test.com/www/blosxom";

Best wishes, J.

The cgi contains this:
# --- Configurable variables -----

# What's this blog's title?
$blog_title = "test";

# What's this blog's description (for outgoing RSS feed)?
$blog_description = "a blog";

# What's this blog's primary language (for outgoing RSS feed)?
$blog_language = "en";

# Where are this blog's entries kept?
