I wrote about this on the ffmpeg mailing list a long time ago, and from
what I remember the answer was that this is not going to be
fixed/changed, as it is somehow container-dependent and conflicts with
ffmpeg's "all-in-one tool" properties.

I'll check if I can find the time to reproduce the problem in a
documented, trac-bugreport-suitable way ;)

try reencoding by removing harddup option and add b_adapt=2 in x264 option

btw, which revision did you use?
because recently, using rev34??? i successfully transcoding Detective Conan
Movie 1-14 with high bframes settings. the minimum is 9 and some of them is
15.
well, the one with bframes=15 is not playable using MPC-HC tough.
i try high bframes because i want to use very low bitrate, 400kbps for
720x400&lt; at &gt;23.97fps material.
and when i rewatching all of them, i feel satisfied.

<pre>

I did a bit of testing to see what happens with different bframes
settings. There's a significant reduction in size and jump in
quality from 0 to 1, but the effect of additional bframes is
a bit dubious. And mencoder crashed with bframes=4.... :(

See attached .txt for full result.

I also attached a small image from excel to show the important
parameters: size and SSIM. Note: on the x axis, 1 corresponds to bframes=0, 2 to 1, 3 to 2 and 4 to 3.

Of course results can easily be different with different settings
and a different file, but IMHO, as long as bframes are supported,
at the very least, bframes=1 should be used. mencoder -msglevel all=5 dvd://1 -dvd-device k: -alang en -slang en -of lavf -lavfopts format=mp4 -o tmp1.mp4 -srate 44100 -af resample=44100:0:1,format=s16le -oac mp3lame -lameopts cbr:br=128 -ofps 24000/1001 -vf crop=704:480:10:0,scale=800:600,harddup -ovc x264 -x264encopts bitrate=1000:bframes=4:b_pyramid=normal:weight_b:keyint=24:psnr:ssim:pass=1:turbo

I don't remember the time someone was actively working on it.
So probably something like more than 6 years ago.
It doesn't really mean issues with it will certainly not be fixed,
but you should expect that issues it has might never be fixed any longer.

You may misunderstand, there is a new FFmpeg protocol called
"concat" that should allow to concatenate several input
files (I have not tested it yet).

mencoder, because FFmpeg can't split/merge files with audio-sample

So, even though I don't like to use unmaintained apps, I'm currently
somewhat forced to use mencoder...

i read at the mailing list that its not some thing important.

i like the way mplayer/mencoder work, its filter chain, its documentation,
etc.

fyi, i can even multipass encoding while joining multiple file. its as if
the encoder only know that there is just one stream.

<pre>I don't know why Wietze &lt;at&gt; gmail.com prefers MEncoder, but I prefer it
because I can't perform pullup with ffmpeg. If I convert frame rate to 30, I
can get 3 normal frames followed by 2 blurred ones, and if I add
"-deinterlace" I can get frame 5 to duplicate frame 4. Neither of those
compromises are completely satisfying. Can ffmpeg do pullup yet?

That is unlikely given that MEncoder is not actively maintained

If you explain why you prefer MEncoder over FFmpeg, there is
some chance that this will be fixed in FFmpeg.
