It can work well when there are two pages, But it will error when more pages .

Honestly, I'm not a specialist in XML and DOM. I'm just working with a large odt document on old machine under Linux and have some nostalgia about rapid autosaves of MS Word  :)

The only thing I can propose is to save history of undos (it has object model in OOo, so it shouldn't be difficult to save into XML) and attach to main document. It will greatly increase speed of autosaves if number of changes isn't too big (I guess <50 will be quite fine)

On Debian-based distros gold is available in repositories and simply
replaces regular ld. No tweaks in build system are need in this case.
As for possible incompatibilities, I've found it's more strict in cases
of "implicit linking" (when A is linked to B, and B is linked to C, ld
sometimes works if A needs stuff from C, but gold doesn't). But I think
it's a bad practice :)

As for LTO (if link time optimization was meant), you can try Intel C++
compiler which has this feature for many years (so called IPO -
interprocedure optimization). But it's unlikely that distributions will
use it because it's proprietary and free only for non-commercial use :(
