I don't have any doubt about it.

Infact, I was interested in your opinion after seeing a lot of users
misunderstanding what a tag is, maybe (?) because default keybinds tends to give this feeling.

Even if dwm can be used as a "multiple workspace environment", it becomes really
useful compared to other window managers when tags are used. Else, why
Mod+Tab keybind exists? To cycle between 2 views, not throught 9
workspaces.
Again, it's just an opinion. dwm suck less enough to be configured/used
to fit one needs.

Xavier

    <description>&lt;pre&gt;
Following his argument one could argue that toggling tags
(Ctrl+Shift-Mod1-[1-9]) on a particular window is a more frequent
option than just giving a window a completely new tag. Or one could
argue that toggling more tags(Ctrl-Mod1-[1-9]) into the view is also a
rather frequent option. However, probably the author uses the tagging
concept only in this specific way (one tag per window, one tag in the
view). With this usage pattern his argument might be valid. But dwm
offers plenty other usage patterns. I look at multiple tags much more
frequently, than retagging particular windows. Mostly windows are
tagged according to the rules[] definition.

The choice of dwm's default keybindings has been developed very
carefully during the years. To me and most long time users they feel
pretty logical after all. And I do not intend to change them, unless
people do not switch to different keyboard layouts.

Best regards,
Anselm

don't worry about 2byte int, that does not work on linux

bit shift does not do arithmetic conversion:
the signedness of the right operand does not matter,
integer promotion is applied independently to the two
sides

the usual way to do the char shift is

(uint32_t)c&amp;lt;&amp;lt;24

or

uint32_t w = c;
w &amp;lt;&amp;lt; 24

Although in this case we still have undefined behaviour
because unsigned int can be 2 bytes by the standard.

Depending on the ABI this might or might not be an issue.

You are right. I will send some incremental patches
to fix this (and for 9base too).
I presume this is in the utils/md5*.c code which I have not
looked at in anger yet.

Integer promotion rules are nasty! I think something like
the following would still be ok?

unsigned f(unsigned int c) { return c&amp;lt;&amp;lt;24U; }

be careful with integer arithmetics in crypto code

your code invokes undefined behaviour because of
signed int overflow:

 unsigned f(unsigned char c) { return c&amp;lt;&amp;lt;24; }

c is promoted to int not unsigned in the left shift

it will work in practice (usually) but that's only
by accident

you should cast c to the right type

Tags are whatever you want them to be. I know some have strong
feelings about tags-as-tags, but I personally work almost exclusively
with tags-as-views (with a few exceptions when I want to compare
things) and find it suits my workflow better. Certainly tag
combination is not something I do with heavy frequency.
