libwbxml 0.11.1 release notes

Download: https://sf.net/projects/libwbxml/files/libwbxml/0.11.1/

Major Changes
=============

  - Fixed performance problems during the parsing and generation of XML
documents. This introduces a new memory allocation algorithm for
WBXMLBuffer. Both original patches from the tickets #80 and #81 were
committed. The patches were supplied by Conrad Irwin.

Minor Changes
=============

  - The tool xml2wbxml is now covered by LGPL v2.1 (or any later).
Petr Písa? discovered that wbxml2xml and xml2wbxml used different
licences. This was a mistake. Aymerick Jehanne and Michael Bell
(the copyright holders) agreed on using LGPL as licence.
    (ticket #76)
  - Extract node breaks (null'ed) the previous node link to a next node
    (too early clean-up in wbxml_tree_extract_node of wbxml_tree.c).
The patch was supplied by Mark Ostrer from Websense (ticket #79).

Internal Changes
================

  - Added a tra</pre>

Hi Matthias,

You can find the latest opensync libraries in git. See the "forks"
listed here, at the bottom of the page:

http://repo.or.cz/w/opensync.git

There is a binary-meta project listed there which makes building binary
packages for the libraries and some of the plugins easier.

http://repo.or.cz/w/opensync/binary-meta.git

See the README inside that project for more information on how to build.

Unfortunately, I don't have a Nokia device, or a syncml device, so
you'll have to track down the appropriate plugin yourself from SVN, here:

http://svn.opensync.org/plugins/

As for Mozilla, see:

http://www.opensync.org/wiki/plugins/mozilla

<pre>Hello,

I had some problems finding a contact to the opensync project as the
mailing list access is only inside the developers section.

My goal is to synchronise my Nokia E75 mobile phone with Mozilla
Lighting on Ubuntu 10.10 via USB. I simply do not know where to start as
the "Getting started" section is empty when it comes to configuration.

I am an engineer and if it helps I am willing to try things out.
Furthermore I could write down my installation experience if it is of
value for anyone.

Best regards
Matthias

Hi Chris,

Many thanks for getting back to me. I don't think I did run the dependency
script under depscripts/ ? !

At the moment I'm having a go with SyncEvolution using the following HowTo:

http://syncevolution.org/wiki/kde-akonadi

I'll let you know if I return to Opensync. Thanks again.

Peter.

Hi Peter,

Sorry for the delay.

Strange. I just ran a test here on oneiric and it worked.

I assume you ran the dependency script under depscripts/ ?
I have python2.6-dev and 2.7-dev installed on my build test setup.

There is libsynthesis, but I'm not that familiar with it. There are
paid services too, like google and funambol, I think.

The project is still alive, but suffering from a lack of developers with
spare time. I've attempted to pick up the ball, but there's a lot of ball
to pick up. :-)

To build the latest packages that I've been maintaining, you'll need to
uninstall the opensync packages you have, and install git. Then:

git clone git://repo.or.cz/opensync/binary-meta.git

Enter that and follow the README file. Note that repo.or.cz sometimes has
load issues, so 'make fetch' is better than updating the submodules manually.

You can choose to build 0.2x debian packages, or 0.4x (which are the 0.3x
devel trees, labeled with hope). :-)

The build will put a pile of .deb packages in the debian directory for you.
If you just want to build everything, 'make debian-all' is the command for
you.

After that, since you are using syncml, and I haven't picked up that ball
yet, you'll need to grab the latest plugin, which I believe is here:

http://opensync.org/browser/plugins/syncml

You might want to try both 0.2x and 0.4x, and see wh</pre>

<pre>Hi Chris,

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I'm using libopensync1exp7 from the Ubuntu
repositories.

I've been worried about the low level of activity on opensync and wondering
why? If the project is still alive and well I'd like to sync both contacts and
events/calendar with KAddressBook and KOrganizer under Kontact. So if this is
a realistic objective, yes please, fire away - stepping me through compiling
from source. Thank you.

Are you running libopensync1exp7 from the Ubuntu repositories? Or have
you compiled from source?

The libopensync1exp7 packages are pretty old, unfortunately.

If you are interested in compiling from source, I can step you through it.

Could someone help please? I'm trying to sync my Nokia 2630 to files on my Dell
Vostro 460mt running Kubuntu Oneiric. When I run osynctool --sync on my
nokiasync group, it appears to run successfully, retrieving my Nokia contacts
to my PC, however it ends with the message "ERROR: Unable to find engine which
can handle objtype data".

When I next run 'osynctool --sync nokiasync' I get a message "Main sink of
member 1 of type file-sync had an error: Unable to find engine which can handle
objtype data" before aborting.

I think I had it working at one point but then it screwed up, so I reinstalled
as follows:

opensync-plugin-files
opensync-plugin-syncml

<pre>Hi,

the missing wbxml_config.h is usually a result of a missing cmake run. I
don't use MS Windows. So I can just apply patches from Windows
users/developers.

Actually there is no active ticket which reports a missing file.

I never touched the stuff in the directory win32/. So I don't know if I
can simply remove the directory or if I have to repair it.

Best regards

Michael

P.S. Sorry for my very late response but libwbxml is today just a hobby.

I think either is suitable, but remember that you need to make the source
available for the library. So probably the path of least headache is
to just include both the DLL and the source inside your Windows installer.

That way, the user always has both, right from the start.

<pre>Hi Chris, thank you for your reply!

In this case, may I distribute my compiled libwbxml-0.11.0 DLL file along
with the proprietary email client? Or should I make it a separate package
to deliver?

Yes, this is fine, since it is the LGPL involved, not the GPL.

If you use libwbxml as a DLL only, then yes, I don't think there is
any further burden on you. As long as the end user has the ability to
replace that DLL with a new one of the same API, and have your software
work, that's fine.

If you use libwbxml in a static manner (linking it into the end EXE),
then you also need to provide the .obj files (not the source code) of
your proprietary program, so that the end user can replace the libwbxml
.obj file, and relink to create a new working EXE.

The basic goal being to preserve the usefulness of the libwbxml source
code in your final product, for your end uesr, so that he can modify it
freely, regardless of what it is linked to.

I'm not a lawyer, but I'm fairly sure about this. :-) The FSF also has
FAQ's that may be of use to you.

Hope this helps,
- Chris

<pre>Hi,

My question is related to LGPL licensing of libwbxml-0.11.0.

I got the source of libwbxml-0.11.0 but found it won't compile on Windows
using Visual C++ 6 (missing wbxml_config.h). I'd like to modify the source
and make it compile, then use it in the commercial software in a
dynamic-link manner(DLL). This proprietary is an email client with
ActiveSync capability.

My concern is that as it's bounded by LGPL, may I keep the commercial
software code proprietary, while using a modified libwbxml-0.11.0 ?

My modification is just to make it compile, but not to modify the internal
of libwbxml.

Is this a case prohibited by LGPL, a close source commercial software dynamic
links to a modified version of LGPL software?

Thanks!

*Weiming*

Assuming my previous statement is true, you have to write/use a plugin
to achieve this.

MMS: May be this would help
