Perl Pod Documentation and the Spell Checker

<pre>Hello every one

Ive Noticed something I find rather disturbing to me with Komodo Edits
spell checker and Perl POD documentation. I know that Pod documentation
syntax checking is not supported; however some people have posted macros to
check it none of which Ive tried yet but this isn't my problem.

My problem is this if i try to spell check the text in my POD documentation
it seams to be completely ignored in both Komodo Edit 7.x and 8.x. even if
the text is highlighted when i tell it to check the spelling and I know it
has misspelled words that would trigger the spelchecker to complain in
comment in my code the spell checker immediately returns completed with no
misspelled words.

Does any one know a workaround or preference setting that can get the spell
checker to check the text in POD documentation?

Thank You Paul Robert Marino

To your question; yes, my questions are related to writing Python.

Hi Nico,

Komodo's Complete Word functionality (ctrl+space, ctrl+shift+space) work
as an iterative (one at a time), where each use of the command moves to
the next iterative. This Complete Word functionality is a side feature
of Code Intelligence (Ctrl+J), the later is much more accurate for
Komodo's main languages (Python, PHP, JavaScript, ...).

There is no way to change this behaviour in Komodo, though it certainly
could be achieved using a Komodo macro. Note the Python code for the
current complete word functionality is visible here:
http://grok.openkomodo.com/source/xref/openkomodo/trunk/src/editor/koLanguageCommandHandler.p.py#1792
and here is a JavaScript macro example for showing custom completions in
Komodo:
http://code.activestate.com/recipes/577012-komodo-js-macro-show-custom-code-completions/

Again, not currently in Komodo, but if your using your own macro/version
of this code, then anything becomes possible (only showing defined
variables for example).

<pre>Please understand my questions well.

In case I am not using Komodo properly, I need to know how I can.

In case Komodo cannot do what I described, the next question is whether this behavior would be desired by users. If so, I would consider to contribute code to implement this behavior (I've already obtained the source code from openkomodo.com / svn).

I hope this list is THE place to discuss this. If not, then I am interested where this topic could be discussed.

I have redefined the key bindings to fit my preferences (tried to have roughly the same settings as Kate in KDE). Attached my scheme.

Like many other programmers I use Autosuggest and Code completion to speed up coding. To me it is an essential and the most important feature of any editor / IDE.

There are 3 steps important. With 2 of them Komodo does not work yet as I hoped:

1) If you are typing the name of a variable, then 'Word suggest' (I call it Autosuggest) should be able to quickly provide information which variables are available, starting with a certain string. Example:
product_id
product_description
product_price

Approaches:

- In IDE's am used to a situation where I can type prod and then press ctrl-space, which pops a dialog with those three options. Then using up and down arrow followed by enter </pre>

<pre>Hi Todd,

I think I know what the problem is.

I have created 3 files to isolate the problem.

models.py:

from django.db import models

class Order(models.Model):
    deadline = models.DateField()
    received = models.DateTimeField(auto_now_add=True)
    registered = models.DateTimeField(auto_now_add=True)

order = Order()
order.deadline = None # works

So far, so good.

works.py

from models import Order

x = Order()
x.deadline = None # works

So far, so good.

error.py

from __future__ import absolute_import
from .models import Order

x = Order()
x. # fails

So only when I'm using absolute import the code completion fails.
I'm using Python 2.7.3

Should I file this as a bug report?

Hope this helps...

Kind regards,
Nico

Hi Nico,

I assume the code can run successfully (i.e. that all of these Django
modules are correctly installed) and "python manage.py runserver" works
correctly?

In my tests, I'm not seeing any problems getting completions for Django
models (django.models.Model, django.models.CharField, etc...), nor any
problems with classes that subclass these models, e.g.:

   from django.db import models
   class Product(models.Model):
       name = models.CharField(maxlength=50, unique=True)
   p = Product()
   p. # I successfully see the completions in this case.

One thing to check is that the Django files being used are the ones you
expect - you can perform a goto definition on "models.Model" to find
where it's located.

Perhaps you could send me the files/project in question so we can
further check for any problems.

Komodo doesn't require anything specific with Python/Django classes and
modules, it just requires valid Python code in which to scan/parse.

Cheers,
Todd

If I try to code in Python (a Django project) I have a problem. Perhaps I am doing something wrong, perhaps these are functions of Komodo IDE or perhaps I found bugs ;)

In my Django project I have defined one model (Task) which is a subclass of django.db.models
In the code it is first instantiated like
task = Task()
As soon as I type task. Komodo starts to scan packages.
Then I see an error:
"evaluating 'task' at tasks.py#502. Could not resolve 'objects' getattr on &lt;class Task&gt; in (blob 'models', []) (error determining completions)

There is no problem with the built-in models or any other classes in Django.
Komodo can also find functions in my project. Only the models which are defined cannot be found.

Of course I have checked edit / preferences / Languages / Python / Additional Python import directories.
There I have the project directory, rel</pre>

<pre>It's true that moving the scrollbar doesn't reposition the cursor on most common GUI apps
I looked at, on all three platforms. Pressing PageUp or PageDown is different, because
you're also moving the cursor (and I noticed that using the scrollbar does reposition
the cursor in Emacs, but a quick exchange-mark-and-point puts you back at the location
before scrolling started).

We have been looking at ways to use the minimap to reposition the cursor in one mode,
and just preview another area in another. It's still early days.

<pre>I'm not aware of an editor that repositions the cursor when you move the
scrollbar either. And I suppose it's possible to view the mini-map as a
kind of scrollbar. Although it doesn't exhibit scrollbar-like behaviors
(both click-in-trough and click/drag-on-thumb behave differently).

But for me, it looks like my code, albeit in miniature form. So when I
click in it, I think of that action as clicking in my code. And expect
it to have the same effect as it does in the maxi-map on the left:
position the cursor at the click point.

<pre>One issue I noticed is that clicking in the mini-map doesn't change the
position of my cursor, so hitting an arrow key jumps me back to where I
was before. Mac apps often have the annoying habit of leaving the cursor
behind when you navigate without arrow keys (f.e. via PageUp/Down), but
Komodo has always been different in that regard. And I really like it
when the cursor follows my navigation. Perhaps the mini-map can do that
too?

As far as I'm aware, no editor repositions the cursor because you've
moved the scrollbar? If I scroll round to check a reference I certainly
wouldn't want to then have to again find where I was editing.
