<pre>ah- and between those two versions, there were very few changes. In
particular, there was a change to the 2580 code to deal with its
padding of the back side of the image. Are you able to recompile
sane-backends from source? If so, perhaps we can try a test.

<pre>Yes- i think there is some problem with the calibration code on these
machines, at higher resolutions the calibration is done differently
than in lower resolutions. Perhaps the old version of the code did
different calibration. How about telling which version of
sane-backends is in use on your two systems?

<pre>Hello,

I have a Canon DR-2580C. If I scan at anything above a –resolution of 240
my attempted scan fails with:

"scanimage: open of device canon_dr:libusb:001:012 failed: Invalid argument"

This problem does not exist on 12.04(1.0.22-7ubuntu1) but does on 12.10 and
13.04 (1.0.23-0ubuntu1). I have run:

"SANE_DEBUG_CANON_DR=30 scanimage --resolution=300 &gt; 2580-1.pnm
2&gt;2580-13.04.log"

and attached the log file to this email. I have also run the same command
on 12.04 (which succeeds) but it is 8MB bzipped so I won't attach it to
list mail unless requested.

Thanks,

Carl

please first test via usb only. The LAN interface (bjnb) could have a bug.

If you still have this scanner we should fix the bugs and you don't need
to send the scanner back.

<pre>Hi Tim,

seeing an "error" while adf is impty is normal behaviour.

What's about running an adf batch scan job empty? Can you start a new
(single) scan job afterwards?

Please use only usb connection while testing. On a 2nd step we can
switch to LAN.

Please be patient if you'll see some errors and it may seem that we are
on the wrong way. We'll find a patch for this scanner.

Cheers,
Rolf

Ar you scanning over the network. It would be worth testing the USB
interface first. And if you can get Rolf the logfiles of a Windows scan
and the Linux scan I am sure that he will be abler to get this sorted
out. This is definitely worth spending some effort for.

The logfile you show here may be pointing to a bug in the network code.
In other cases I have seen a faiure to open a tcp connection, this was a
bug in the network code. Did you test with the latest code from git?
Could you please try the same procedure over USB (disconnect the network
connection for the time being)

<pre>Unfortunately my report was premature. The backend did successfully
manage a 1 page ADF scan followed by an ADF empty test, but more normal
use profile failed as:

o Placed 9 sheets in ADF

o launched xsane w ADF/multipage=9

o ask for and received preview, adjusted color with white eyedropper

o ask for scan, failed

After this, the MX892 was locked out regardless of several
retries/variations including power cycling MX892, removing ~/.sane,
removing cnijfilter and rebuild/reinstall 16 May git. All variations
error as follows:

Unfortunately this means the MX892 is unreliable and will be returned to
Amazon. I'll do my backend homework better next time.

they made linux driver for another imageformula (p-150). This model is a
bit more expensive but it's encouraging for the future.

<pre>Hi Tim,

Many thanks for your report.

As I can see on the supported scanners site
(http://www.sane-project.org/lists/sane-backends-cvs.html#S-PIXMA), your
scanner is completely supported by the SANE Development Version.

So, with the SANE git version you don't need to use 'PIXMA_EXPERIMENT=1'
anymore.

But it seems that there still is a problem with 'ADF empty'.

If you can reproduce this problem, please provide some debug infos
created with 'export SANE_DEBUG_PIXMA=11' and 'xsane &amp;&gt; pixma.log' from
the command line.

If 'ADF empty' is OK, I can remove this comment from the supported
scanners site.

Cheers,
Rolf

If a user reports a bug saying a scanner is not working as expected
quoting gscan2pdf behaviour, then first I have to see whether the
problem is due to gscan2pdf itself, the Perl bindings for SANE, or the
SANE backend. However, if the user can reproduce the problem with
scanimage, then it is fairly clear that the backend has the problem.

<pre>

Thank you for your hint. I finally got it working.

In gt68xx_devices.c, struct "static GT68xx_Model
plustek_opticslim1200_model", I exchanged the last entry "0" with
"GT68XX_FLAG_NO_POWER_STATUS". This is line 1752 in v-1.0.23.

In words of diff:

 diff gt68xx_devices.c_bak gt68xx_devices.c
 1752c1752
 &lt; 0
 ---
 &gt; GT68XX_FLAG_NO_POWER_STATUS

After recompiling, the scanner is working now as expected.

That's all.

Of course, this small change should inserted into the sources. Can do
this someone for me? Otherwise, I would have to create a bug tracker
account only for this small issue, if I understood it correctly.

<pre>GUIs often either use the SANE API directly, or control a scanner by
wrapping scanimage.

Generally, there is no advantage in using scanimage, as it is slower,
but in certain situations, for instance remote access, it is not
possible to use the SANE API directly. Also, debugging a backend
problem is much easier with scanimage.

The major visual difference for the user in these two interface
methods, is that, apart from groups, scanimage does not expose the
option titles. As the option names are not translated, a GUI therefore
cannot use the sane-backend translations and has to use its own.

This could all be avoided if scanimage were to expose the option
titles. The translations from sane-backends could be used, and the two
interface methods would look the same.

I therefore propose an additional option for scanimage that exposes
the option title in the --help output.

Is a patch for scanimage along these lines likely to be accepted?

Jeff
