<description>Ok got rsync working and the md5 checks out, but I'm still only getting half the file when I uncompress it.

What uncompress tool are you using? I've tried a few but I'm not sure if they cope with files this big...

Thanks!

Oh dear, nmy brain was not working properly when I added the link above for
India from Cloudmade.

I menat to write :

or try the download for the OSM data from
http://downloads.cloudmade.com/asia/india/india.osm.bz2

from this page

and then use that as input for mkgmap.

Sorry for any confusion :).

You could try making your own using mkgmap:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Mkgmap#Creating_a_map

or try the downloads from Clodmade which seem to include India
http://downloads.cloudmade.com/asia/india/india.img.zip

from this page:

Thanks.

It reads:

The .img files from downloads.cloudmade.com are our "OpenStreetMap
Error Edition". These are intended to help OSM volunteers when they
are out mapping, and so highlight roads that are missing names and
other features that may be of interest only to mappers. If you're not
helping out with OSM then it may look a little confusing!

That mean it is not meant mapper and cannot be used for navigational purpose.

Is there any .img available for navigational purpose?

Is it something to do with tagging on OSM, or some setting by

<description>What tool are you planning to use the planet file with? Many of the
tools are built to accept the compressed file as input, as the process
of uncompressing the file generally takes a really long time (and eats
huge amounts of space as you've already seen). I would check the
documentation for the tool to see if it does handle the compressed file
first.

I've just downloaded this file from the same place and it was fine so
most likely it has become corrupt during the download. You might want
to check the md5sum of the file you downloaded to verify this - a
quick google search turned up this tool for windows:
http://www.md5summer.org/

Because of the size of the file I'd suggest downloading it with rsync,
rather than just trying again, which will guarantee a correct
download. Looking around this is available for cygwin (under windows)
which is probably your best bet - although it would involve installing
quite a few random bits of software to get this working.

You can then download the planet file using:

rsync rsync://ftp.heanet.ie/mirrors/openstreetmap.org/planet-081126.osm.bz2 .

Hope this helps,
