Okay, I figured the trackball part out. I was originally thinking of trying
to get the stick and trackball axes to overlap....but that didn't seem
possible. But then I remembered that my mouse number is different. As I have
a wireless keyboard/mouse deal, and to consolidate controls connections, I
have my trackball hooked into the mouse port. Instead of this

input_map[p1_trackballx] mouse[1,x] -mouse[0,x]
input_map[p1_trackbally] mouse[1,y] -mouse[0,y]

it is

input_map[p1_trackballx] mouse[2,x] -mouse[0,x]
input_map[p1_trackbally] mouse[2,y] -mouse[0,y]

(I know, the axes are reversed. For some reason, that equals correct
cardinal directions on my system. Always has, despite OS re-install, so it
must be the wiring in my control panel.)

Then I thought, what would '3' do?

input_map[p1_trackballx] mouse[3,x] -mouse[0,x]
input_map[p1_trackbally] mouse[3,y] -mouse[0,y]

And this allows the trackball to work simultaneously with the analog stick.
Jesus. Simple, but jesus. Note that a game-specific setting was

Okay, some new points on this: this card can display low pixel
clocks/resolutions if loaded via soft15khz. When AdvanceMAME tries via
generate_y, generate_yclock, or xclock (in essence, anything via the svgawin
drivers), my monitor displays a screwy double image - like if it were trying
to either interlace the image, or display at one with a refresh my monitor
won't handle. So two things come to mind:

- the registry method soft15khz uses is 'low' enough to get around the ATI
watchdog, and the method Advancemame uses is not.

- an interlace or/and refresh issue that the card is creating through
over-riding what the software is telling it.

...possibly particular to this card, I don't know.

- the drivers don't really matter. Due to the circumstance noted below, I
tried different drivers - 81.95 (Nvidia claimed these were the original ones
for the card), 93.71 and Guru.com 93.71, and recent 169.21 . Same behavior
with all.

- the 'default monitor' settings mean the old XP refresh issue is back.
Weird, because I didn't experience this with my 6200. I had to use
RefreshForce to correct this. A somewhat minor issue, particularly because
I'm familiar with what happens when my monitor won't display at what I know
are acceptable resolutions, and because I'm familiar with RefreshForce.

Though it wasn't immediately obvious because I was at first thinking it
wasn't going to work like the first time around......wait!....maybe the
install had nothing to do with it!! Perhaps the refresh issue was always
the culprit!!! Not that the re-install wasn't worth it for other reasons,
big time, but still.

- anyways, again, maybe particular to this card, but so

I did an XP re-install (SP3, and all updates current), and now my geforce
6800 is usable in AdvanceMAME! I also am using a different driver set -
81.95, instead of 93.71 I was using with my 6200 (?) - which I didn't try
out before re-installing, so maybe that was actually the solution, but it
was totally worth it.
