Does that mean that all the component's files have to be in the same
directory as the .cmake file? i.e. you can't have a build/foo.cmake
that just points at the real one?

Also, how does it handle the common case where you have
distribution-provided files in /usr, site-local packages installed to
/usr/local, /opt/*, and user packages in $HOME?

Doesn't cmake have some kind of search path (like $PKG_CONFIG_PATH)?

I meant that homebrew doesn't provide (binary) packages, so you still
have to compile everything from source. Including gtk+. For X11 only.

If you use the official jhbuild, you at least get the Quartz version.
But I guess I should still submit it, even if there's an PyGTK.pkg ?

Can't really say that chowning your /usr/local is a good idea, though.
Same reason as http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=484841

The solution isn't to make it easier/automatic to run things as root.
A better solution* is not needing administrative privileges at all...

Right.

Right. However, in case the developer did not install any other
packages with 0install apart from the dependencies that have been
downloaded by Ryppl, this will be the complete cache.

I am more worried about rebuild times. I don't want to recompile my
whole workspace just because the object files have been trashed.
Compared to time, diskspace is basically free.

I'm presuming symlinks are no good, if this has to work on windows too?

Also, by "the complete 0install cache" you mean the selected cached
version of each of the subpackages, right? Not the whole cache for all
of 0install.

If this is for a build directory, it could presumably be trashed
afterwards if you are worried about the disk space.

Our primary use case are C++ projects that use CMake as their buildsystem.

Every project provides a <project>Config.cmake file that is used to
import usage dependencies for building (like compiler and linker
flags). CMake is keen on searching for these files in many different
locations. This usually just works.

* If the package is installed via the system's package manager, the
package is installed to a standard location, so CMake will find it
easily.

* On Windows, CMake queries a value from the registry that has been
set by a binary installer.

* When building with 0install, we set the <project>_DIR environment
variable to the directory path that contains the <project>Config.cmake
file, which is all CMake needs.

Now we plan to split each project into multiple components. Some
components are recurring (bin, dbg, dev, doc) but there may also be
project specific components. These components are mostly optional [*].

This might be a PackageKit problem though. Thoughts?

I'm using 0install on a Fedora x86_64 system, and I notice that when
installing an 'i386' feed with package dependencies (in this case,
http://hircus.multics.org/interfaces/2011/skype.xml), 0install cannot
resolve the package dependencies if they're not already installed.

To try:

$ yum remove glibc.i686 # make sure no i686 packages are installed
$ 0alias skype http://hircus.multics.org/interfaces/2011/skype.xml

This will fail, with the Version field of the dependencies
(alsa-plugins-pulseaudio, libXss, libXv, qt-x11) being marked in red
as "(problem)" - No suitable version was found. Double-click here to
find out why.

Double-clicking shows, for example for libXss, the following:

1.2.2-1 | - | packaged | (package) | *-x86_64 | - | None

I'm afraid I don't follow what you mean by "no packages are provided".
Are you saying that brew has a pygtk package available but no gtk+
package, so pygtk is effectively useless? (unless you explicitly set
up X11 gtk yourself)

Cheers,

That sounds sensible. How can we share access to the file between the
Python and .NET code?

[ Currently it just assumes that an app called NAME has a single shell
command called NAME so it doesn't record what's currently integrated
anywhere yet. ]

Note that we still generate launcher shell scripts, as with 0alias, e.g.

$ cat `which rox`
#!/bin/sh
exec 0install run rox "$< at >"

At some point, we should change this to run a C program, to avoid
starting Python at all.
