<pre>Dear Rexford,

I experienced many times of HK visa application. I suggest you to
try apply the visa from Hong Kong Immigration Department directly
instead of Chinese embassy. I think HK Immigration Department does not
require such documents.

You have to mail (or let someone in Hong Kong to submit ) the
application form with necessary documents to the Immigration Department
at following:

     Receipt and Despatch Unit

     Hong Kong Immigration Department

     2/F, Immigration Tower

     7 Gloucester Road

     Wan Chai, Hong Kong

Refer:
http://www.immd.gov.hk/en/services/hk-visas/visit-transit/guidebook.html

The necessary documents are listed on Section VI.

Note:
1. If possible, I suggest to have someone who living in Hong Kong (must
actually living in HK now) to be your sponsor, let him/her to submit the
documents, pick up the visa and pay the fee at the counter in Wan Chai.
2. If no one in Hong Kong can help you to submit and pay, a HK$160
cheque from HK bank may be necessary for payment. You have to put the
cheque into the envilope with your documents.
3. The application takes 4-6 weeks. If urgent, fax the document to +852
2824 1133 prior to you mail it.

If you have any questions, you can ask me at ka360&lt; at &gt;live.hk

Bank statement from WMHK? Letter of Invitation?

<pre>Hi, I'm from Ghana. I'm rexford. I'm sorry this comes off lengthy, but its
something i've faced before so wanna bring it up.

*Bank Statements*
To enter many countries ( I don't know yet for Hong Kong), the embassy
requires the bank statement of the inviting organization or the
organization funding the scholarship awardee aside the awardee's personal
bank statement.

The bank statement is basically required so the embassy knows that the
organization taking you out of your base country is worthy of caring for
you during the timespan of your stay in the new country of stay.
Irrespective of how big or small the inviting organization is, the bank
statement is really essential for the consulars

Last year, I that wasn't available for me from WMDC for 2012 Wikimania.

I want to learn if WMHK has any arrangement for releasing banks statements
- if not their global bank statement - at least with respect to the
awardee, indicating specifics (eg, allocated funds for the person with
respect to accommodation food, transport, sightseeing(if any) etc)

Some countries are very critical about that (UK, US and other developed
countries (I presume Hong Kong is similar) - Though they won't tell you
directly that's why you were not accepted for Visa, in their eyes, it
counts a lot.

*Invitation Letter*
I'm sure WMHK will send to the scholarship winners who wish for visa
application assistance some letter(s). Seriously, such letters in certain
parts of the globe, like my country, hardly counts. I will emphasize that,
consulars in certain parts of Africa, including Ghana don't take letters
seriously, after all, letters are today writable and signable by anyone
anytime from anywhere. To that effect, such types of letters sometimes
loose their weight and intent though they might be/or are legitimate. Its
is very critical because of the number of fraudulent cases reported at such
embassies.

I ask, is there no other authoritative means whereby the WMF or WMHK can
directly correspond with the local embassy from where the awardee is coming
from other than just a sheet of white paper with black ink? Their
corresponding with the local embassy is NOT to decide for them as to
allowing their invitee to come around, but rather, to *re-emphasize the
fact that* its true the invitee is really invited by an organization for
blah blah blah.

I believe that will rather be a practical visa assistance, if one will
wanna call it that.

Many organizations intercede for their invitees when they lose acquisition
of a visa to travel. Their follow ups aren't meant to challenge with the
local embassy, rather to impress on them and try to explain in clear and
direct means what their inviting the person all has to do.

It happened to me last year, thus my concerns. I couldn't attend WMDC 2012

I wish to be enlightened more.

Thanks.

rexford

Broadcasting Wikimania 2013?

<pre>

Wikimedia CH already set up a videoconference tools for the movement, we use it during the Education meeting in Milan and it works well.
Like all videoconf system, the bottleneck is the bandwidth of each participant.

Manuel already publish a list of the material needed for a perfect videoconf, but actually you only need a computer, a webcam and an headset (a mobile phone bluetooth headset make a perfect wireless mic).

The tools wkimedia CH choose is intend for on line teaching, it means that we have recording possibility, that box , desktop sharing (need java browser) and presentation display (open format or pdf are the most efficient)

It would be really easy to broadcast any talks or workshop during wikimania, we only need at the minimum:
-one volunteer per conf/workshop to broadcast with a computer, a mic and a webcam (not a built in, not convenient).

If there is a real demand for broadcasting the Wikimania , Wikimedia CH can coordinate the effort.

As a side note, wikimedia CH is asking from any recipient of a scholarship to provide a report about their "Wikimania" in order to share the experience with those who not attend. I think that in the future it may be fair to ask to all scholarship recipient to participate to a joint effort to make wikimania available for everyone in the wikimedia movement (broadcasting or taking minutes on ether pad)

Cheers

Charles

<pre>I recommend trying to sell them on organizing a regional event if they
don't win the bid for a global one. There have been many successful
regional 'manias, and after London 2014 there are some rotation
reasons why it would not be an ideal year for a bid in Europe.

<pre>Hello everyone,

Wikimedia Hungary has recieved an interesting "sales pitch" today if we can
call a two liner that.

One of the largest Hungarian travelling agency's department (or
subsidiary?) for conference tourism have expressed interest in organizing a
Wikimania in Budapest, Hungary in 2015 in cooperation with WMHU. (My
understanding is that WMHU would be a content advisor or similar in it)
They've expressed interest in individual workshops as well (of course).

They've emailed us the bidding page for Wikimania 2015 [1] and the blog
entry about the Program Evaluation Workshop that will be held in June in
Budapest [2] (I guess) to underline their interest (and inadvertently
highlight they're actively monitioring these events)

I believe you already have the questions in your mind about this; here are
my ones:

1) What if a third party applies to create an event? (like a workshop or
Wikimania)

It is not prohibited for a for profit company to create a bid, nor they
have the necessity to consult or cooperate with any of the chapters (though
it is almost certain that they'll get some wikip/medians to help with the
content). There are many workshops and meetups where Wikipedia is being
discussed or being the topic without having any wikim/pedians speaking or
attending, but something like a workshop, or Wikimania would be an
"internal event" (even if maximum possible outreach is the ultimate goal in
the latter)

1/b) What if their bid is the best overall? Would they be allowed to
execute it (a.k.a. being announced winners)?

note these bids would not be coming from the local communities as they are
coming now, but from outside.

1/c) What if such a bid comes from a country where is no chapter formed yet
(or a non active or too small /or etc./ exists)?

Given the fact that Wikimania is so far the best local outreach tool of the
movement, creating one in a country with small, or struggling (for whatever
reasons) communities/chapters could result in a huge boost of that
community/chapter. (it would be nice to know btw the aftereffects of the
previous Wikimanias on the organizing chapters if it was ever measured)

2) Could it be an option for future bidders to outsource some or (almost)
all parts of the organization/catering/other tasks to a third party
(outside of the movement) keeping only the content management to themselves
?

The (future?) Wikimania Committee is in broader terms an officially not
registered - internal - project company to help creating future Wikimanias
in general.

Feel free to add your questions, while answering mines and others' :)

Cheers,
Balázs

<pre>

Hi folks,

All this discussion is great, but I just want to remind you to leave any
last comments on the proposal for a wikimania committee above if you have
them. So far there has only been a small amount of discussion on the
charter about staggered terms, which I tried to incorporate. It seems like
most of the discussion that's happening now is about the structure of
Wikimania which is bigger than the proposal to create an oversight
committee?

I think it would be good to try and get this proposal wrapped up fairly
soon and sent off to the Board for their consideration, so if you do have
any specific comments on the charter proposal or the resolution please do
leave them on the talk page.

Thanks!

<pre>As far as I know, none, as they will only refuse entry to Israeli passport holders (though Dubai allows Israelis to transit, if I'm not mistaken).

Talking about middle-eastern airlines, does anyone know if I'll have difficulty transiting through Dubai or Doha if I have an Israel stamp in my passport? (from Wikimania 2011, obviously)

<pre>Hi

I know it is May already
and I have let our General Manage (he self-proclaimed aka Chief Party
Manager)
to push the relevant parities to get the code soon

we need some time to work on the code for Cathay (in theory you can also
get the flights from One World, the alliance it belongs to)
on the other hand we don't have any other connection with other airlines so
I don't think we can get to the discount from those like Qatar Airlines

also please check the price if it is include tax or not, tax in Qatar
airport can be really high
(as some previous experience, correct me if I am wrong)

<pre>I think Jeromyu should have known for this. (I heard Cathay will be the
carrier...)
And I too am the one who would like to know further details! :-)
