The "library" in question was linked with the libtool -module flag, indicating that it is actually a module meant to be dlopen()ed. If this "library" is indeed a module, then it simply won't work until you get it to build shared. If you want to provide your .cygport and patches, then I'll try to help with the package if you want. It is a bit annoying that cygport disagree with my intention. PS: not all the libraries are dynamic upstream. Suitesparse is still static and it works fine for building octave. Qhull was static for long term before upstream released a dynamic version with some hints from my side. Lapack and Atlas are still static upstream, and the dynamic cygwin libraries are results of some hacks. You can't, and for good reason: static modules are completely worthless, so if one shows up, it is a red flag that something is certainly wrong. One of the libraries I wanted to test building was SDL and I couldn't get it to build for Cygwin out of the box. So, I asked on the SDL mailing list and they refered me to http://cygwin-ports.git.sourceforge.net/git/gitweb.cgi?p=cygwin-ports/SDL;a=tree as a starting point. I applied the patches by hand to the latest version of 1.2.15. If I leave out the SDL_platform.h patch and use the other patches, I'm able to get the latest version of SDL to build successfully on Cygwin (using ./autogen.sh, ./configure, make, make install). The only part that doesn't look quite right is that the dll is named SDL.dll instead of cygSDL.dll. Haven't had the chance to look into that further. I was also able to build pdcurses using SDL. (Would be curious to know if there are any advantages to ncurses over pdcurses other than ncurses running in a Cygwin console outside of X.) I've been attempting to get the Equinox Desktop ( http://equinox-project.org/ ) to build on Cygwin. I have pieces of it running and am working with the developer to see how much farther I can get. Am testing out building some other Open Source applications on Cygwin as well. If anyone's interested in some of the patches or anything, let me know.
