Anyone interested in helping to organize the Great American Wiknic,

Resolving conflicts and reaching consensus

<pre>Hi everyone -
This is a project presented at Wikipedia Day 2010 at NYU in New York
last January..http://ideagra.ph
We presented this as a way to discuss a few of the most
complicated/controversial Wikimedia-related issues that haven't yet
garnered a consensus. It was specifically designed to fix the current
problems with Wikipedia's discuss pages (arguments get very long,
complex, and messy).

What makes a debate here different from one on a standard discuss page?
Statements have a color (green/red) which represents their current
state of consensus (something that's been refuted, for instance, is
red). You can also re-use facts concluded in other debates by other
people - thus allowing the work of debating/reasoning to be
distributed among (potentially) billions of people.

We've created a Wikipedia category for issues surrounding Wikipedia:
http://ideagra.ph/1870

We need your feedback...

I'm sorry about this myself, I've been very busy myself. You are right that we need to get moving again. Johnny is talking about getting together sometime eventually, and assuming there is enough advanced notice, I would like to do that myself.

as to the bylaws, I guess they are in a good form now. I feel like it's been 100% of my writing and there hasnt been a lot of input from other people which is why i'm hesitant to submit them. If i felt like there were a few more people "signing off" on them I would be more willing to submit them to chapcom.

Still up for it... not for a few weeks though, as the
farm is a bit busy right now. Next full moon perhaps?
We could do a pre-halloween theme or something (which
goes well with the hayride idea anyway).

No idea here on the other stuff, because I've been
pretty busy the last couple months.

usual after-summer routine; now let's try and get the ball rolling again
with the Chapter. :-) A few points:

* Johnny: Fundraiser/Party at your farm -- still interested?
* Andrew: Do we agree that the bylaws are pretty much ready?
* Where do you we stand on the whole "lawyer" aspect? Has anyone done any
research on this? i.e. how much money will need, what they will need to do,
how many are in the area...
* Where are we with that new logo? (One we can use on our flyers/banners.
Just use freely with no strings attached. ;-))
* I'm waiting on some financial statements of other chapters from Internal,
but these may not come for a little bit longer (the person who I need to get
them from is a very busy person!).
* Technical changes of the website are at a very low priority for Brion
right now (he has SUL, FlaggedRevs, etc., to worry about), most of the
changes are minor/superficial and will be done eventually.
* We're now about to about 23 interested participants. :-)

Anything else I have forgotten? Comments? Updates? :-)

Hoping to hear back from all of you soon!

We do have a mailing list for a reason, and it is a valid medium for
communication, discussion, and decision-making. For that matter, more unique
members have participated in this mailing list then have posted on the
website yet. I'm sure that's a situation that's going to change eventually.

Having a discussion in either place is fine, and I would recommend that most
new discussions get cross-posted to both places. There are, after all, some
members who have better things to do then check their watch list on our
website every day, but if an email shows up in their inbox they aren't going
to ignore it. --~~~~

<pre>
It was the first idea that came to my mind, and as a Wikibookian it should
be assumed that my first ideas are going to be about textbooks. While the
philadelphia school district (being the most needy) would benefit greatly
from free textbooks, other rural districts have just as great a need and
would likely be easier for us to get into then a larger more
politically-charged district like philadelphia.

What I think might be an interesting idea would be to look at GED study
guides or study courses (Wikibooks and Wikiversity) for children who are
pressured to drop out of school early because of their family
responsibilities. I know this is a common issue with children of farmers,
who tend to work during the day when normal school hours are being held.

But you are right, the rural denizens are just as important to us as the
urban ones.

Furthermore, the archives are public, so we they can follow the discussions

However, I understand how you would want this to take place on-wiki and I
agree that this is a pretty good alternate course of action. :)

The Rural We

<pre>I drove nearly 350 miles today on an errand (picking
up a couple goats), and it reminded me of what a
rediculously big state this is, and how many small and
medium sized cities there are (along the way I went
through or near Allentown, Hazelton, and
Williamsport). Someone of the foundation-l list had
mentioned that having a local chapter would be more
important for the suburbans than the urbanites, but I
think it might end up being even more of an asset to
rural communities and the towns in the interior of the
state.

Andrew (Whiteknight) has mentioned both online and in
conversations with me how he would like to see
Wikibooks-derived textbooks made available for poor
urban districts. I agree with that, but we shouldn't
forget that there are rural areas in our state that
are just as poor, with even less exposure to the
world's opportunities.

I don't really have anywhere to go with that, but it
seems to me that outreach into the hill country
shouldn't be ignored for the sake of outreach into the
inner cities. We have a lot of hill country in PA :-).

Well, there is one actually, but it's just the WM logo
with "Wikimedia Pennsylvania" beneath it.

My suggestion was to do something with more local
flavor, like some derivative of a hex sign (a form of
folk art that PA is somewhat famous for). We're also
the state where you're most likely to see an actual
barnstar on a barn, so that might be something to
incorporate as well.
