Book (collection) feature for Wikibooks

Hello devs,

I am Aashish Mittal and am currently working on a project for creating a
'Book' extension for Wikisource/WikiBooks. There is a bug filed for this
feature (check bug 15071<https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15071>)
by the wikimedia community developers.

This extension would enable the users to group selected pages into logical
'books' and use these books as per their needs. We are currently working on
defining the scope of this project, but an initial thought to this project
defines the following deliverables for this extension:

 1. Create a book
 2. Page addition wizard (also containing search filters for finding
 particular pages)
 3. Import book metadata (where user can directly add set of pages from
 his export list)
 4. Export book metadata (export the book details containing all page
links to a file which can be saved by user, similar to MetaBooks)
 5. Add to a book option for every page
 6. Table of contents for a book
 7. Read a book (navigate through pages or some kind of an ajax based
 book reader)
 8. Recent changes for each book
 9. Create chapters
 10. Arrange order of pages in a book
 11. Protect/watchlist/move/delete all pages of a book
 12. List books
 13. Search for a book
 14. Search in a book
 15. Automatic Bookshelves, where the books of a wiki could be organized
 according to their metadata (examples:
English<https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/en:Wikibooks:Departments>,
 Portuguese <https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/pt:Wikilivros:Biblioteca>, ...)

This feature is an extension of
Collection<http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Collection>and
BookManager <http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:BookManager> and
intends to add additional functionalities described above to them. It would
be great if I could get some suggestions from the Wikibooks community
developers about their requirements, the features they would like to see
and any implementation ideas. I have created a
topic<https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Wikibooks:Reading_room/Proposals#Book_feature_for_Wikibooks>in
the Reading room for the same. Kindly add your valuable suggestions
for
this project.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Aashish

Greetings,

The Wikimedia Foundation is planning to upgrade MediaWiki, the
software powering Wikipedia and its sister sites, to its latest
version.

The upgrade will happen in several stages over the month, starting this week.

You can still help to test it before it is enabled, to avoid
disruption and breakage.

More information:

Hello everyone,

I am pleased to announce the beginning of Steward Election 2012 [1]. We are
now taking nominations from eligible candidates. Interested candidates can
check their eligibility and procedure to submit the nomination on the
guidelines page [2]. We are open to candidate submissions till January 28,
2012, 23:59 (UTC). Questions to the candidates can be submitted until
February 6, 2012, 23:59 (UTC). Guidelines about questioning can also be
found on our guidelines page [2].

This time we are also arranging the confirmation of existing stewards [3].
But the confirmation will begin on February 8, and will finish on February
27, 2012.

Please remember, the voting has not yet begun and will be not until
February 8, 2012, 00:00 (UTC). We will poke you once again when the voting
start.

As you all know steward election is a global event, so we need help from
volunteers to translate necessary pages into languages they speak. For
those who want to help us out with translation, please see our translation
portal [4]. And if you have any queries related to translation or anything
related to the election, you can ask us on the talk page [5]. Alternatively
you are free to poke us on IRC channel #wikimedia-stewards-elections.

For those who are a little bit surprised to see another election in few
months, I want to let you know that previous one (in September-October of
2011) was a special one which we arranged in need. This is the regular one
to elect new stewards and to confirm existing ones.

Please feel free to forward this e-mail to any list if you think it will be
useful. :-)

*Call for referendum*: The Wikimedia Foundation, at the direction of
the Board of Trustees, will be holding a vote to determine whether
members of the community support the creation and usage of an opt-in
personal image filter, which would allow readers to voluntarily screen
particular types of images strictly for their own account.

Further details and educational materials will be available shortly.
The referendum is scheduled for 12-27 August, 2011, and will be
conducted on servers hosted by a neutral third party. Referendum
details, officials, voting requirements, and supporting materials will
be posted at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image_filter_referendum

Here's an example of a remarkable publication that we should support
capturing, in its elements and its final layout, to support reuse and
sharing in other sorts of documents:

http://skateistan.org/skateistan_blog/out-now-student-mag-arts-skateboarding
http://www.skateistan.org/PDFs/Bridge-Final.pdf

We need to improve automation for adding these sorts of things to
wikisource: scripts to request and capture license information, and to
batch upload PDFs, extracting individual images and text from source
files, uploading them separately, and approximating the original
layout.

DPLA Beta Sprint: Calling all Submitters!

Dear Wikimedians --

A project to build a national public digital library in the US, the
"Digital Public Library of America", is asking for statements of
interest from people or groups who have ideas for what this might look
like -- and mean to create a prototype or detailed proposal over the
course of this summer.

Actual proposals, of whatever form, are due in September, but a
statement of interest is due by June 15. If you are interested in the
subject, or currently working on a project you could see being part of
such a public resource, you can submit a statement online:

http://blogs.law.harvard.edu/dpla/forms/statement-of-interest/

See below for background on the DPLA. While this group is focused on
a national project for a single country (formed by a consortium of US
libraries, foundations, and academics) , they are conscious of the
need to do something similar worldwide, and committed to making this
process and ersulting tools as open and reusable as possible.

At the Digital Public Library of America, we've just announced a "Beta
Sprint" to gather creative ideas, models, and other innovations that
could play a role in the building of a DPLA. We'd love to see
submissions from members of this list, as we know many of you have
excellent thoughts on how this effort might take shape. Please find
the full announcement below, and let me, Rebekah Heacock, and/or Maura
Marx know if you have any questions or want to team up with one of the
groups that appear already to be forming to make a submission.
Best,
John
--
The Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) Steering Committee is
delighted to announce today a Beta Sprint that aims to surface
innovations that could play a part in the building of a digital public
library.

The Beta Sprint seeks, ideas, models, prototypes, technical tools,
user interfaces, etc. – put forth as a written statement, a visual
display, code, or a combination of forms – that demonstrate how the
DPLA might index and provide access to a wide range of broadly
distributed content. The Beta Sprint also encourages development of
submissions that suggest alternative designs or that focus on
particular parts of the system, rather than on the DPLA as a whole.

The DPLA Steering Committee is leading the first concrete steps toward
the realization of a large-scale digital public library that will make
the cultural and scientific record available to all. The DPLA planning
initiative grew out of an October 2010 meeting at the Radcliffe
Institute for Advanced Study, which brought together over 40
representatives from foundations, research institutions, cultural
organizations, government, and libraries to discuss best approaches to
building a national digital library. Subsequent workshops in March and
May have addressed the content, scope, and technical aspects of a
DPLA.

“As the DPLA planning initiative moves forward, we are optimistic that
the DPLA community and public can help us think about what a DPLA
might look like, in practical – and perhaps unexpected – ways, as
platform, architecture, interface, and beyond,” said John Palfrey,
chair of the DPLA Steering Committee. “We hope geeks and librarians,
especially, will join forces to develop beta submissions in support of
this initiative.”

“The Beta Sprint is where the dream of a seamless and comprehensive
digital library for every person begins to grapple, technically and
creatively, with what has already been accomplished and what still
need to be developed,” said Doron Weber, Vice President of Programs at
the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and a Steering Committee member. “The
DPLA represents the broadest coalition of stakeholders ever assembled
who are dedicated to free and universal access to knowledge for all,
and the Beta Sprint will help us kick off an 18-month program to
construct, brick by digital brick, this beautiful new edifice.”

For inspiration, Beta Sprint participants might consider the general
approach taken by initiatives whose leaders are on the DPLA Steering
Committee, such as the Internet Archive, Public.Resource.Org, the
Hathi Trust, American Memory, and others, as well as the Europeana
project and the national digital libraries in the Netherlands, Norway,
and South Korea.

Submission instructions and more information are available at
http://blogs.law.harvard.edu/dpla, where you can also watch a short
video about the Beta Sprint. Statements of interest must be received
by June 15, 2011. Final submissions will be due by September 1, 2011.

A review panel appointed by the Steering Committee and composed of
experts in the fields of library science, information management, and
computer science will review Beta Sprint submissions in early
September. Creators of the most promising betas will be invited to
present their ideas to interested stakeholders and community members
during a public meeting in Washington, DC.

[ResourceLoader] JavaScript may break on your wiki: Fix it before that happens

Greetings,

As you may know, the Wikimedia teach team has started to upgrade
MediaWiki on some wikis. MediaWiki is the software that runs all
Wikimedia wikis.

The most visible change for Wikimedia users will be the deployment of
ResourceLoader [1].

ResourceLoader optimizes the use of JavaScript in MediaWiki, speeding up
its delivery by compressing it sometimes, and cutting down on the amount
of unused JavaScript that gets delivered to the browser in the first
place.

The installation of ResourceLoader may cause compatibility issues with
existing JavaScript code.

Trevor Parscal and Roan Kattouw, the main developers of ResourceLoader,
will be available on IRC [2] on Monday, February 14th, at 18:00 (UTC)
[3], to answer questions and help fix issues related to ResourceLoader.

*If you maintain JavaScript code on your home wiki, please attend.*
Don't wait until your wiki's JavaScript is all broken.

Please spread this information as widely as possible; it's critical to
reach as many local JavaScript maintainers as possible.

Logs of the session will be published publicly.

Hi Everyone!

With the Annual Fundraiser starting in less then two weeks the fundraising
team will be having IRC
office hours this Friday November 5th at 22:00 UTC (15:00 PDT, 18:00 EDT
23:00 CET orhere <
http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?month=11&day=5&year=2010&hour=22&min=0&sec=0&p1=0>
for more timezones) in the #wikimedia-office channel of the Freenode IRC
network.

If you are interested in what we have been doing recently I encourage you to
take a look at the Meta fundraising portal athttp://
meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fundraising_2010 or join us on IRC in the
#wikimedia-fundraising channel at any time.

If you do not have an IRC client, there are two ways you can come chat using
a web browser: First, using the Wikizine chat gateway at <
http://chatwikizine.memebot.com/cgi-bin/cgiirc/irc.cgi>. Type a
nickname, select irc.freenode.net from the top menu and #wikimedia-office
from the following menu, then login to join.

Or, you can access Freenode by going tohttp://webchat.freenode.net/, typing
in the nickname of your choice and choosing #wikimedia-office as the
channel. You may be prompted to click through a security warning, which you
can click to accept.

Please feel free to forward and translate this email to any list I may have
missed and I hope to see everyone there!

-------- Messaggio Originale --------
Oggetto: Five-year WMF targets exclude non-Wikipedia projects
Data: Sun, 10 Oct 2010 12:33:07 +0200
Da: Federico Leva (Nemo)
A: Wikimedia Foundation Mailing List <foundation-l-RusutVdil2icGmH+5r0DM0B+6BGkLq7r< at >public.gmane.org>

Despite repeated assurances at Wikimania, on lists and on strategywiki,
that the strategic plan was going to consider all Wikimedia projects as
important, now at
http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Resolution:Five-year_targets the
second target, «Increase the amount of information we offer» considers
only the number of Wikipedia articles.
«We're aware of the challenges around bot-created articles, articles of
low quality, etc., and the limited focus on Wikipedia, so this metric
shouldn't be seen in isolation, but is an important indicator.» Yes, but
a wrong one.

I'm, very, very disappointed: I have to conclude that all the words on
community participation etc. were only empty rhetoric.

Are you a Wikibookian? Invitation to Online Interview

Dear Wikibook Contributor,

Thank you for those who participate in the online questionnaire which aims to assess the motivation of Wikibooks' contributors.

I am pleased to advise that the analysis of the data from the completed online questionnaires has been finalized. The analysis provides some initial insights into the reasons Wikibookians contribute to Wiki textbook projects. However, some of these results require further investigation to gain a better understanding of the motivation of Wikibooks' contributors.

Now, I would like to invite you to participate in the online interview. The interview will take from 30 to 45 minutes. This interview will be in the form of text chat. I have attached a 'Research Information Sheet', which provides more detailed information about the research and interview. This research project has been approved by the University of South Australia's Human Research Ethics Committee.

Could you please reply to this email with the appropriate local time for you to meet with you online?
Date & Time: ----/----/2010 < at >---- AM or PM?
City: --------------------

Your reply will be considered as your consent (agreement) for the interview. When I receive your reply, I will add you to my messenger contact list, and you will then receive an invitation from InterviewonWikibooks

I look forward to meeting with you online

Thank you

Kind regards
