Know anyone who needs a jr. admin?

<pre>Hi all,

As some of you know, I have been spending this last year looking over
RHEL administration material, and most recently Bash and Perl scripting
materials using LinuxCBT training videos and taking alot of notes. I
also played around with installing some stuff on CentOS VMs

The reason for this initiative spawned from having a job which is a
non-technical role and having downtime to study and stay up to speed the
best I can on my own. I have been in this position for about 6 years
and I know it won't look too hot on an IT resume. I am quite eager to
get into a junior position where I can get some practice and build my
skills. I have a strong interest in TCP/IP and lean toward that rather
than software development (although I dabble in a number of languages
C/C++, Java, etc). Learning Cisco stuff is another goal of mine, but I
am focusing now on Linux administration.

I have been out of an IT job for some time, but managed computer labs at
UT in the 90's for about 5 years (mainly Mac and Windows workstations
and servers back then). I went to program for a couple of years before
industry layoffs ensued. Throughout the 200* decade, I have maintained a
good book collection and try to stay on top of things on my own.

Ultimately, I would like to ask if you or your colleagues might know of
something such as a jr. admin position that would be a good fit. I am
dedicated to tech and do my homework when I have systems to work with.
I can pass along a resume if you know about something. Please let me
know- I am pretty open to ideas, and want to get back into the thick of
things as soon as possible.

Thanks a bunch!
Tristan Mendoza

<pre>You might want to try UFRaw. I use it sometimes to edit photos. I have a
Nikon and the proprietary formate for Nikon is .NEF. In the previous
version of Gimp, 2.3 or 4. I really can't remember, but UFRaw and Gimp
used to work really well with each other. Then this latest version came
out or the one I am using 2.6 and it all got screwy. Though the UFRaw
version changed, it isn't that much different. Gimp change the way some
of the actions in the menu worked. It was like trying to learn a whole
new Gimp. Granted before I was working with a long term version of
Ubuntu and maybe the change was gradual, but since I was using the same
version of Gimp and UFRaw, I did get comfortable with them.

The problem I am have with Gimp right now is that picture is coming out
much darker than I it is pictured on my screen and black and white pics
and the various shades of gray are now pink and black with various
shades of gray. Really weird. I might have to up grade again to see if I
can get any better results. I am using Ubuntu 10.10 and it is coming to
and end for support.
On my laptop I am using Mint Linux. It seems pretty stable and not too
heavy.

<pre>Found from "Linux Today", I was just about to adopt OpenStack after
Spring Break was over- I may not.
There are questions on it qualifying as true OOS
Sorry for the blabbing:

I have had other adventures the last two days so I am taking a break.
Spring Break: Movies: Silent Running, Star Wars, someone is getting me
back into Babylon 5

After celebrating Pi Day on 3-14-2012, I last night (next evening) was
carrying out trash and fell down the stairs which marked the top of my
nose with a little T for Tristan (my name) scratching by the concrete so
i will now have an identifying mark as a scar. Initially I was angry but
maybe it will heal ok and go well with my Marvel-like Pi outfit with my
ThinkGeek tshirt and Punisher-like leather jacket (someone's asking me
to do it so I think I will!)

One thing I found this Spring Break is Rush's music videos. I am not a
big Rush fan- I stopped looking at them in 1984- but this stuff isnt
bad! Retrospective 2009 dvd (I got overloaded and and to stop)

Sorry to miss last night's meeting... I thought I should go to bed and
am still healing
Here is that article on OpenStack:

Is the OpenStack Foundation All about Big Money?

By Sean Michael Kerner | March 14, 2012

From the 'Apache Way' files:

The OpenStack foundation is gearing up and figuring out how to organize
itself. Part of the discussion involves money and membership class fees.

It's a topic that is never an easy one with open source software and
always draws critics. With the OpenStack Foundation, the plan is to have
a super-member class that will cost $2.5 million.

Yeaah, I did a double take too. Reminds me of the old OSDL days when
they charged anyone that wanted to associated with Linux $1 million.

With OpenStack there is at least one vocal opponent of the super-member
plan - OpenStack co-founder Joshua McKenty.

If we have a simple pay-to-play model, then we can trust market
economics and enforce transparency of spending," McKenty wrote. "If we
have a simple 'meritocracy', then we can expect the most skilled and
dedicated to rise to the top, provided we’re extremely careful about how
we measure skill and dedication. If we blend the two, I’m deeply
concerned that we’ll see the worst of both systems play out over time –
the selfishness of market-driven economics dominating our decisions with
the petulant moralism of the meritocracy. "

An interesting argument and McKenty knows alot more OpenStack than I do.
That said, I think that McKenty is wrong.

You need to look no farther than the Apache Software Foundation to see
how this dual system of money and meritocracy can work. The Apache
Software Foundation takes big money from vendors like Microsoft, who
yield little influence on development. Development is managed by The
Apache Way of meritocracy and it works. The Eclipse Foundation has a
similar model that has also worked well.

So yes, you can have big money and a meritocracy for developers too.
