<description>The Chumby is actually a nice versatile toy if you enjoy hacking. Linux
Journal did a write-up on it a few months back, so I did a quick Google
search and found this quick article:

Enjoy, and don't bash the Chumby. ;)

<description>Accelerometer recognizes when you whack it so it can stop bugging you -- for a
while anyway.

If they lowered the price to 50-60 dollar range I'd buy one just so I can
program multiple alarms for myself. Anyone who has problems getting moving
in the morning could use that. Dedicate one of the usbs to a standard
keyboard? The sight also mentions "virtual chumbys" -- do they run on my
desktop screen?

<description>I've often said that the average user doesn't need much computing power. If all they're doing is writing e-mails and buying stuff online, they could get by with a super-bare-bones computer and a lightweight OS that points the user to his/her frequently-used applications. If not for its horrible interface and /optional/ keyboard, the WebTV concept might have actually worked out. chumby* seems to be the latest incarnation of that concept. Be nice if it had a keyboard, though; even a Chiclet-sized pop-out keyboard would be helpful for returning messages. That, I think, would be a great selling point for social networking addicts.

I have to wonder, though, why chumby's standard features include an accelerometer. Do they expect people to use chumby as a weapon?

for the group.

We talked about putting a group of folks together to do this. Those
of you interested (skilled or not) please contact Chris at

This hasn't been completely flushed out, so nothing is in stone here.

We'll keep the current minimal website until the group has had a
chance to put together some ideas on how the website might look and
what we should include.

All reasonable ideas are welcome.

This is your chance to participate in putting a good face on AKLUG.

<description>So during the presentation, folks commented that their particular
xorg.conf files don't have all the entries that I talked about during
the presentation.

All this means is that those particular settings were autodetected and
giving a look through Xirg.0.log will identify how things are set for
your particular setup.

Also, it doesn't preclude you from specifically setting those values
in the event you want to goof around with how your video works.

From what I can determine, most of the autodetect things are coming
from version 7.3.

In my particular case, we are using 7.2.

Library Information Systems - PVA Number: 109525

It's possible that the second one is actually an internal listing, but
it is on their website.

Maybe someone would want to take a stab at one of these.

This was laughable.

They aren't doing a feature to feature comparison. On might draw the =20
incorrect conclusion that you can't do near as much with SELinux that =20
you can do with the Windows Group policy.

Honestly, because the two OS's are so different, you wouldn't use =20
SELinux to do some of the things they are doing with the Group Policy.

So without direct conversation (written or otherwise) it would be hard =20
for someone who did not have an understanding of these two =20
technologies to do a valid comparison.

If folks are pointing to this as a good comparison, I would call them =20
a charlatan.

<description>I recently had a chance to talk with some of the leadership at ASD. =20
We are working to put flyers into the schools and to possibly allow us =20
to speak at the High Schools about Linux and Open Source.

Because it is so late in the year, This may only have effect next year =20
as school starts.

The seed is planted and we will see if it can grow.

Additionally, I heard that they are looking at the ASUS eepc. I had a =20
chance to play with one of these and suggested that if the ASD needed =20
help with configuring these in a special way, that AKLUG would be =20
willing to see what we could do to help.

I also ran into an Elementary Ed technical person and she had recently =20
been doing research into using some of the educational software =20
packages available for linux.

We also discussed the idea of using LiveCD's so that folks could at =20
least experience Linux without having to worry about destroying data =20
that might be on the machine they are using.

So lots of interesting things happening in the school district, I'm =20
looking forward to what might come out of all this.
