He may have fresh motivation to look at this if it is framed in terms
of independence and privacy of communications - The Guardian is just
reporting that Britain hacked Turkey's delegation to the G20 and they
are very unhappy.

Hi all,

I've finished my English draft of Vincen's original letter to Erdogan. Please
take a look and comment:

https://public.pad.fsfe.org/p/MrErdogan

I changed the tone to be less flattering and more direct. Bear in mind that
this letter is being written more for its impact on Turks and the wider
political and software community than it is for Mr Erdogan himself (he'll only
be interested in reading it if lots of other already found it interesting).

We have to be careful to be sensitive to the other shocking events still
taking place in Turkey, and I recommend we preface the letter with a brief
statement about how we are aware of those events and recognise this is not an
ideal time to talk about software, but that the decision will soon be made
about the tablets and freedom must not be left behind in the debris of Taksim
Square.

Again many thanks to Vincen for his first draft!

Best,

Sam.

OK, so this feature list may be about older cards or it may not be
written clearly:
http://wiki.debian.org/Smartcards/OpenPGP#Features

When I saw that, it gave me the impression the card supports either (3 x
1024 keys) or (1 x bigger key)

Ok, this leaves me feeling that a much more detailed support matrix (or
maybe even a database) may be needed to help people choose their optimal
combination of reader + card + key size + software

For example, I would prefer to use 2048 bit keys for the moment if that
gives me wider support for card readers and software versions while
other users may prefer to only use 4096 bit keys and just focus on a
shortlist of hardware that supports such keys and quickly see a list of
any software limitations that will apply to them.

I've definitely got the newer card, I was just concerned about the
ambiguity of how many big keys I can put on the card.

I am not sure whether the card supports assigning multiple uses to a

work. Unfortunately, I had problems with one card reader that worked
fine with 2048-bit keys (Akasa AK-CR-03BK External Electronic ID and
Smart Card Reader). Fortunately, Omnikey 1021 works fine for me. Neither
of those has a separate pin pad, though.

Regarding 1024-bit keys support only… This applied to OpenPGP version 1
smartcards. As far as I know, these are no longer distributed to
Fellows, so no need to worry about that.

<pre>
Some time ago there was some discussion about the fellowship smartcard
and 4096 bit keys. I understand that most of the recent cards that say
they support 3072 actually support 4096.

Debian 7 now includes gnupg v2.0.19, so it supports 4096 as well

The SPR532 pinpad card reader was recommended by Martin, I notice it is
superseded by the SPR332. However, the SPR332 is not on the supported
list here:
http://wiki.debian.org/Smartcards

and I also found comments suggesting that pinpad support used to be
problematic, but that was 2005:
http://lists.gnupg.org/pipermail/gnupg-users/2005-June/026082.html

and this email says it works, but doesn't specifically reference the pinpad:
http://lists.gnupg.org/pipermail/gnupg-users/2013-February/046054.html

and it's not clear whether that means it works just for GnuPG or
potentially for other applications too (e.g. Iceweasel/Firefox, Java)

I also had another look at the fellowship page:
http://fellowship.fsfe.org/card.html

and it mentions that the card supports three keys: but from what I've
read elsewhere, it appears to only support three 1024 bit keys, or just
one 4096 bit key. What does this mean in practice: can a single 4096
bit key be used for all purposes (signing, encryption and ssh) or is it
necessary to have three separate cards for each of those subkeys?

I've had a look at the FSF info about the campaign for a Skype replacement

http://www.fsf.org/campaigns/priority-projects/priority-projects/highpriorityprojects#Replaceskype

While it specifies that existing solutions have shortcomings, it
doesn't specify what the final solution should look like. In other
words, a developer aiming to build such a solution won't know when
they cross the finish line.

Has anybody done any policy work, possibly similar to the Debian Free
Software Guidelines, to define the essential attributes of a solution?

Looking at it from another angle, Debian also provides a set of tests
to determine if a license is really free:

http://people.debian.org/~bap/dfsg-faq.html#testing

and it may be useful to define a similar set of tests for evaluating a
communications application.

I have also put Sinan Doganli in CC, who has campaigned on Free Software

It could be a simple open letter, sent in physical and postal form to
the Turkish government, and published on fsfe.org.

Are you happy to start drafting it? Please use pad.fsfe.org so that
others can participate. You can reuse arguments from the FSFE
education team pages. I recommend keeping the text simple.

Thanks for working on this opportunity :)

Sam.

<pre>Hi,

Yesterday I read this press release:

        http://www.electronista.com/articles/13/05/20/country.seeks.bids.on.106.million.tablets.for.students/

&lt;&lt;The Prime Minister of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has been touring
Silicon Valley companies this week, on the heels of a similar tour by
Turkish President Abdullah Gül last month. Both men received VIP tours
of facilities at Microsoft and Google, and met privately with officials
from Apple. All three companies are hoping to land a contract to supply
the country with at least 10.6 million tablets for the country's
students&gt;&gt;.

Do you think it could be a good idea to send a message to Mr. Recep
Tayyip Erdoğan and to Mr. Abdullah Gül regarding the advantages of the
use of devices with free software in an educational environment?

If yes, how do you think it could be done?

Could it be done from the FSFE?

Best regards

Vicen

Italian Ministry of Education: problem of freedom

<pre>Hi!

The Italian Ministry of Education University and Research (MIUR) offers
every year a series of obligatory written tests in order to evaluate the
levels of student learning. Those tests are carried out by the National
Institute for the Evaluation of Educational System (INVALSI)[1] from
which it derives its name: "INVALSI tests". The INVALSI is subject to
supervision by the MIUR and of course they should work in a neutral way
towards the market of the software, but unfortunately it is not.

The INVALSI provides schools with an XLS file which contains macros to
record the evaluation of the students. Of course this file doesn't work
with Free Software and doing so the INVALSI force schools to use
proprietary software.

Unfortunately the XLS file was provided to me by a school, but they
asked to me to not spread it (for the moment). I posted a screencapture
of the macro in action on proprietary software.

  http://lugscandiano.org/index.php/File:Invalsi_non-free.png

I would like that the FSFE get active with the MIUR and the INVALSI to
ask them to solve this problem of freedom. Of course I will be glad to
get myself active to this campaign and I can ask for the cooperation of
the LUG Scandiano, to which I belong, which in the past has been very
active on the PDFreaders campaign. Maybe we could even ask for a support
of the Italian Community of LibreOffice and perhaps also of The Document
Foundation to give more weight to our eventual action.

Next weekend I will meet Italo Vignoli, from The Document Foundation, in
an event dedicated to Libre Office organized by LUG Scandiano. If you
think it might be useful I could talk to him about this idea.

Please let me know.

Ciao,
Massimo

<pre>Although I really would like that, I think Kontalk is not ready for
this yet. It would mean a possible explosion of new registrations - as
much as my server can take, which is quite a lot, but that's not the
problem, I prefer to wait for the XMPP switch.
Is there a NL for targeted to developers? Kontalk really needs people
to work on it :-)

Just to say that I've been using Kontalk since the day it was added to
f-droid, I've introduced it to about 20 people, and use it personally
for communication with 10 contacts on a daily basis (including to FSFE
staff).

It's especially useful for me because I recently moved to Berlin from
the UK and free text and image messaging allows me stay in touch with
folks back home.

I agree that it fits perfectly into the Free Your Android campaign.

Keep up the great work!

Sam.
