<pre>both fbdev and vesa drivers left me with over 30Mb of free space. The
icewm desktop even showed a background picture which it has never done in
the past, and the remote desktop session hasn't locked up for several hours.

Thanks for all the information... looking back, I think the openchrome
drivers WERE causing an issue, because even running an rdesktop session, I
still have over 30Mb free.

I'm sticking with the vesa drivers for now, unless someone has a good
reason not to, and now I need to get sound working.

Thanks again.

<pre>You could try going to the fbdev or vesa driver instead of openchrome. Other users have reported locks on the openchrome driver, but I have not had any issues.

You need to go into the BIOS to adjust the allocated amount of video.
It's unlikely yuo need more than 8 MB. The math is simple. Example:
1024x768 in 24 bit color = 1024*768*3 (times three as 24 bit is three
bytes) and then you round up to a "magic" number supported by your
BIOS. It's unlikely you'll need more than 8 MB and for most purposes 4
MB is plenty.

Are you consistently using the same test unit? You might have a faulty
RAM block. It's entirely unbelievable you can't do basic RDP with your
hardware. I can run Internet Explorer with sites using both java and
javascript with a system restricted to 108 MB RAM. Absolutely no
problem. This very moment I'm actually installing a new java version
via IE 8 running TS-5.1/rdesktop on 108 MB.

So either there is a problem with your hardware or the video driver you need.

<pre>Quite clearly I don't have plenty, otherwise my system wouldn't lock up.
As you say, the RAM could be "wasted", but I don't know how to check for
that either, and I've been trying what HAS been suggested. I also
responded in a separate email to your question about initrd size and I also
provided details of my build.conf so you all could see I'm not doing
something strange with my setup.

With the suggestions I've been given so far, I've seen a slight improvement
in my RDP experience, but it still locks up in the end. I at least get the
desktop of the terminal session, but now if I start opening and closing
windows, it locks right up again. If there are windows already open from a
previous session, it locks up as well.

I don't have any idea what could cause this sort of behavior.

bit optimistic saying you could do the half the amount, but you do
have plenty.

However you better sit down and figure out where the 20 MB (128-108)
goes. Allocating it to video RAM is a complete wate.

<pre>I think you could drop gtk and hi-color for rdesktop.

In order for fastboot to work with local storage, you must label the partition containing the lib.squash "boot". That's the default.
Some users have reported that they can't label a parition "boot", but must label it "BOOT". in which case, you would need to change the bindmount to "BOOT:/boot"

Here's first part of my build.conf:

machine HP-t5135
module usb-storage
module vfat
module squashfs

package ntp
package xorg7-openchrome
package locale-en_US
package rdesktop
package icewm
package icewm-theme-bluecrux
package gtk-2.0
package icons-hicolor
package fonts-TTF-BH

....

the build creates:
Kernel size is 1910K
Initrd size is 20212K

So I don't know where the problem is, but the system locks hard (mouse stops moving, keyboard unresponsive, even with Numlock light) whenever I attempt to use a terminal session.

As I already explained to you yesterday you should be more worried why
9.5 MB is wasted... You have more than plenty RAM to run RDP. You
could do with half the amount and still have plenty.

<pre>I wasn't able to run it with fastboot enabled. I think it's failing to
download the lib.squash file from the pxe directory, but I can't see the
initial error, just "can't run '/bin/start-session' : No such file or
directory" keeps scrolling by.

Without fastboot enabled, the system seems to have about 9.5Mb free after
getting the IceWM desktop, so we've gained 2Mb by enabling memory
constrained, but the system still locks up after using the terminal session
for just a little bit. It does seem to get a little further, though.

<pre>HI,

Thank you Michael for your advice with openssl. I have successfully packaged VMWare View 5.1 for TS 5.0 with the package from Ubuntu and those from HP (for USB redirection).
For OpenSSL 0.9.8, I grab the .so from the Ubuntu package instead of the symlinks and it works !

However, I had to modifiy the vmview.init file because the --file option does not exist anymore in VMWare View 5, so you must use a preference file with the view.xxx options (cf vmware doc).
Now I have a fully working package configured by the thinstation.conf.buildtime.
Best regards,

Mickael,

This looks like you downloaded the VMware View Client with PCoIP from the Ubuntu canonicals?
This version uses OpenSSL 0.9.8 and you cannot make the link from OpenSSL 1.0 to resolve the dependency.
Search the archives of this mailing list. Someone has a Thinstation5 contrib that they can send you. Alternatively, you'll need to generate a port (or grab a copy and cross fingers) for OpenSSL 0.9.8, but I'd go with the existing solution.

Good Luck,
Michael

Hi,

I tried the VMWare View 4.6 package from alessandro (http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_id=28922921) and it works well, but now I want to install the WMWare view 5 in TS5.
I read the following links :
http://habrahabr.ru/post/142497/

The problem is that I can't download the package because I'm in France and not in russia (for the reading, google translate is your friend).
If someone can, I'm interested by receiving it.

I tried to repackage the VMWare View 5 like does alessandro with le 4.6 version, but when I launch it on the TS 5 station, I get a segfault in libcrypto.1.0.0 after typing the server URL.
It seems that there is a problem with the libcrypto in TS5 and View 5.
Does anyone have seen this problem before ?
What can I do to resolve the problem with this segfault ?

Thanks for your answers.

<pre>Two solutions that will work with or without smart cards. Functionality is
identical, its just a matter of fixing the problem before build or at run
time. Take your pick:

1: Pre-build fix
mkdir -p packages/pcscd/lib/pcsc/drivers

or
2: Runtime fix
Modify packages/pcscd/etc/init.d/pcscd..
In the "init)" section, on the line above "/bin/pcscd" add:
mkdir -p /usr/lib/pcsc/drivers

In 1, you use /lib/ in 2 you use /usr/lib/. Apparently, when a package's
/lib/ is copied into the image, it's put under /usr/. We're just trying to
ensure that the drivers directory exists even if no drivers are being
loaded.

As always, thanks to the Thinstation team for all the hard work!

<pre>The problem appears to be with PCSC. Citrix is waiting for
/var/run/pcscd/pcscd.comm to appear. Pcscd is terminating because it can
not find the drivers at /usr/lib/pcsc/drivers.

If using smart cards, include a driver package. Alternately, we can modify
the pcscd package to include an empty directory usr/lib/pcsc/drivers. Even
an empty folder will allow pcscd to run, creating the pcscd.comm file and
Citrix is then happy.

<pre>
If you boot from PXE or Syslinux makes little difference. TS is
running off a RAM disk anyway so the boot method is next to
insignificant. It's merely a matter of speed.

108 MB RAM indicates that the system has totally 128 MB and some is
spend for video RAM. However 108 MB RAM should be more than plenty for
rdesktop.

I assume you have only
machine HP-t5135
in your build.conf and you don't build with --allmodules.
I also assume you only have the correct video driver in build.conf and
no more (I assume the video needs the Intel driver, but check with
your docs).

In this case there is no reason why TS-5.x won't fly with rdesktop.

Don't worry what "free" says. Linux alway makes good use of available
RAM and reshuffle it when needed.

What's the size of your initrd?

Mike

<pre>Hello all,

I've finally been able to get my HP t5135 to load using PXE. I've set it
to use ICEWM (the default) and added either freerdp or rdesktop. With
either package, when I connect to my Windows 2008 terminal server the
system locks up after I've entered my credentials. When connecting to a
Windows 2003 terminal server, I can at least get to where I can see the
desktop, but trying to run programs it locks up.

If I leave it running ICEWM and don't launch the rdp client, the system
will function without locking up. But when I try to establish an rdp
connection, eventually it locks.

So I got to looking at the free memory on ICEWM's About menu, and noticed
that at most I have 7.5M free of 108M. So I'm thinking maybe I'm running
out of RAM. I tried loading the syslinux files to the flash drive and
booted from it, thinking that would free up some usable RAM by not
requiring a RAM drive used by PXE, but I have the same amount of RAM
available once ICEWM loads as before.

So, how can I free up memory to use?

Or maybe someone that has TS 5 files for the t5135 could share with me
their configurations so I can get this working. I need it to connect to a
terminal session with Windows 2008 and provide sound, that's the main thing.

Thanks for your help and advice.

<pre>wfcmgr launches fine. wfica is the culprit. Deleting the ~/.Xauthority
made no difference.

I'm struggling with the trace trying to determine what is actually causing
the delay. It may be the X11 socket.

<pre>There used to be a splash screen at some point when launching Citrix
Receiver, but it disappeared at some point. I haven't figured out why.
Is this happening when launching wfcmgr or when launching a specific
connection, as via wfica?
