I have some trouble posting to news.gmane.org using slrn. The actualy
posting often hangs and I have to abort and choose Repost at the prompt.
It is then processed quickly, without hanging.

I get the feeling that there is some network connection that has timed
out (while I was writing the article?), and which isn't properly renewed
until the repost (retry) is done. That's a wild guess.

I have never used slrn before, or with another news server. Version is
1.0.1.

The installation seems to be successful, despite the error messages, so
it's not a huge problem.

ISTM that there's either a new translation that hasn't been completely

i'm using "set query_read_group_cutoff -250" so that i don't have to
download a huge batch of headers all at once (which i probably do't
need) but sometimes i have unread articles that are beyond the 250
most recent articles. is it possible (maybe with a script) to download
even more aritcle headers from inside article mode?
thanks.

This was a problem with the get_charset function, more specifically with
this line in mime.sl

 private variable Mime_Save_Charset = get_charset ("display");

It is that line which causes the segmentation fault. For now I have
changed it to:

 private variable Mime_Save_Charset = "utf-8";

and everything is okay.

And slrn now processes mime messages very nicely!

Thanks!

This is Fedora (well actually this is a development version of RHEL, but
I use slrn from the Fedora packages) so we have the bleeding edge
here ... particularly
http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/packageinfo?packageID=921

However, it seems to me that your patch can work with Q-P encoded
messages just fine, whereas plain slrn (1.0.1) doesn't (see

Yes. How big are the gaps? slrn is not optimized for the presence of
large gaps in a spool directory. When it appears to hang, use
something like strace to trace the system calls it is making. My
guess is that it is trying to open the non-existent files in the gaps.

They look like they're increasing (i.e. newer messages always get
higher numbers), but not every number is present. Might that be the
issue?

That's good to know that procmail can produce something readable. So
it must be doing something right with regards to filenames. My emails
come in via offlineimap, maybe that is doing something different.

What version of slrn are you using? Do you have it compiled to use 64
bit article ids? `slrn --version` will answer these questions.

Are the article ids random? slrn assumes them to be sequential.

I use procmail to put my emails in the appropriate maildir format that
slrn can read. For this particular list, I use the following rule in
my .procmailrc file:

 :0
 * ^From slrn-user-bounces< at >lists.sourceforge.net
 List/slrn-users/.

Note the trailing "." after the "/" -- it is required.

In my .slrnrc file I use:

 #ifdef LIST
 set spool_inn_root "/home/john/Mail/List"
 set spool_root "/home/john/Mail/List"
 set spool_nov_root "/home/john/Mail/List"
 set server_object "spool"
 set read_active 1
 server "/home/john/Mail/List" ".jnewsrc.list"
 set scorefile "News/Score-List"
 set replyto ""
 set reply_string "%r <%f> wrote:"
 #endif

I have a number of mailing lists under /home/john/Mail/List ---
slrn-users is one of them.

Then to read the mailing lists, I startup slrn via:

 slrn -DLIST

I hope this helps.

Reading from a maildir

Hello,

I'd love to read mailing lists in slrn's excellent "delete after reading"
paradigm, so I tried to use slrn to read messages from a maildir.
(I do know about Gmane. Unfortunately, it's not the answer to everything, e.g.
closed company-internal emails. ;)

The basic structure (one file per message) is similar to the one used by
slrnpull, so I thought it shouldn't be too far out of reach.

So I copied a maildir into my `spool_root`,
and while it shows up in the group listing (as three groups, due to the cur,
new, and tmp subfolders, but never mind that for now), I cannot enter the group
, since slrn tells me "No unread articles" (even when I give a prefix argument).

It turns out, the filenames used by the MTA are the reason
(they look like this:
"1238693874_1.1813.elzar,U=15,FMD5=e42be6580d0096a1aff2feecb8227077:2,S").
When I rename them to be just numbers (by cutting off everything after the first
dot and removing the _), slrn enters the group without issue for the first time,
but hangs (with 100% CPU usage) when trying to enter the group again.

Now I'm stumped. What would it take to get slrn to read messages from a maildir?

Thanks for your help,
Wolfgang

The "Latest News" should be updated over at:

http://slrn.sourceforge.net/index.html

Going to "Download" from there _does_ specify that slrn 1.0.1 is the
current version.

You might re-post you announcement over in comp.os.os2.... I posted a
"Heads Up" there, but your more formal announcement should be welcome
news.

Thank you very much!
Posting now with it from my FreeBSD VPS box.

Fantastic news, thanks for your hard work on this one! The slrn
website has some quick details of the new version, greater details and
a few more alterations will be added in very soon.

All the best,

Andrew

slrn version 1.0 released

Hi,

I am pleased to announce the release of version 1.0 of the slrn
newsreader. Detailed information about the newsreader is available
from <http://www.slrn.org>.

The slrn source code may be obtained from

 <http://www.jedsoft.org/slrn/download/>
 <http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=7768>

While not as big of an event as the ending of the Mayan calendar or
the Winter solstice, today marks a major event for the slrn project.
As many of you know, this release is long overdue. But the main
reason that I wanted to put out 1.0 is that I still see a number of
people using older, less reliable versions of the newsreader. As such I
encourage all slrn users to upgrade to the new version so that we can
be on the same page.

The newsreader would not have become what it has without the support
of those that have helped in one way or another with the project.
While some them may no longer be active on Usenet, I would like to take
the opportunity to publically acknowledge a small fraction of them.
These include:

 Michael Elkins
 Matthias Friedrich
 David Gerard
 Howard Goldstein
 Andrew Greer
 Sven Guckes
 Jan Hlavacek
 Jay Maynard
 J.B. Nicholson-Owens
 Mark Olesen
 Peter J Ross
 Felix Schueller
 Andrew Strong
 Rudy Taraschi
 Thomas Wiegner
 Lloyd Zusman

I am especially grateful to Thomas Schultz for his role as the lead
developer for the 7 years that I was away from the project.

Thank you.
--John

Re: how to show number of followups in thread

As I recall, you can't modify the look of the thread list in the way you
want to by using a macro.

I also believe there is no slrn option to do what you're aiming to do.
But my familiarity with slrn configuration variables is not what it used
to be. Please do peruse
http://slrn.sourceforge.net/docs/slrn-manual.html and check for
yourself. If I'm wrong about this, please do post back to the list.

This leaves modifying slrn's source code. You could modify slrn to make
it do what you want. If you do this, consider adding a new
configuration variable to make your modification settable.
