I don't have exchange server currently running with samba4, but I have been able to switch MSAD to samba4 even though there was old Exchange 2000 schema loaded. The ldap entries are still there and I didn't have any issues when adding a samba4 DC to the MSAD and synchronizing. Actually when synchronising, you transfert both data and schema definition. However you may not be as smooth with other Exchange version. Keep on trying, samba4 is worth it! Is the DC you are trying to join to, running as an exchange server? if it is, I do not think the join will work because, as standard samba4 does not have the exchange schema, it may work if you add openchange to your samba4 server. We have perfectly working LDAP environment with replication, well tuned, with many additional attributes and with a lot of non-samba related services (email, mailing list, address book, user specific data). For all that time we had comfortable situation, that the users had to remeber just one password. And now, if I understand the situation correctly, there is no way to keep the password synchronized between Samba4 and external LDAP. I don't need to authenticate samba against external LDAP, but I want to somehow trigger password change in LDAP in case of changing it in Windows, and vice-versa. And I really think that migration of our well known and fully functional LDAP system, which is the core of our environment, is not the best and proper way. If you only access the data via Samba you might set this to yes to achieve better NT ACL compatibility. From the description, I thought if I set it to yes it will skip/ignore the setting of system ACL and only store NT ACL in xattr. However, the error still appear in Samba log: acl_set_file failed: Operation not supported even after I set it to yes. Our LDAP server is not on the same server. It is a central enterprise server I did this part for the Adminid use ldapclient tools (e.g. the command line ldapsearch or the gui Apache Directory Studio ldap browser and editor) to make sure you can connect to the ldap server via LDAP, LDAP+TLS and/or LDAPS-over-SSL. You need to make sure you have all the certificates configured correctly. LDAP authentication works perfectly directly from our AIX server. I can do ldapsearches and can login with my ldap credentials etc..
