I like this one. Sounds like they just took the original recording and transferred it to CD.
Still has some of the hiss and background noise, but has a very pure sound.
As mentioned before, it has the pure sound of the technologies of the time. 
The types of tape and equipment limitations that is the pure part of the sound of its era.
I I think i'd prefer it. Give me the total, original sound and ambiance of the time, noise and all.

So, after all of this discussion, I finally had the chance to pull out my copy of the CD and give it a listen.
I am listening to the Virgin CDVD2506 version. So, is this the version I should be listening to, or should I turn this one into a coaster?
It sounds good to me, although I am listening at work through computer speakers that are at my feet!!~ LOL

Totally agree! I would love to see some of the early tracks revived.

They could replace some of the tracks that have been done to death recently like 'Ayumis Loom', 'Sallys Garden', 'Lady Monk', 'Marmontel...' etc. which are getting tiresome.

Hi:

Haven`t heard any of my remastered Kraftwerk Cd`s in ages, I
remember the sound quality was great, the dissapointing fact on
those is that german sung, they just does not sound familiar
anymore. "Minimum-Maximum" DVD has the best sound quality I can
get out of my 5.1 equipment, aboslutely amazing.

As for Klaus remasters, its so noticeable they are meant to be
beautiful releases to keep and enjoy over and over, nice packaging
and full of bonus tracks,

TD`s "encore" deserves a new release of that kind, being that is
the result of a very long tour,  plenty of other great music
was played worldwide those days, much of it on our beloved TT`s

The original was an excellent rendition of the original vinyl, resplendent
with the original noise/hiss (and therefore atmosphere and dynamics) on the
master tapes.
The definitive edition remaster is a disaster.

Hmmm... I had most of the old 1980s Virgin CDs, and I bought the new Virgin
boxset bundles last year, and took the trouble to rip all the discs to my PC
and do A/B comparisons in an audio editor.

The 'Encore' remaster is certainly, um, the one I had the most technical
"issues" with, but the original 1980s CD also had many issues and to be
honest on balance I felt the remaster was still an improvement (just still
well short of a excellent job!). I would at least compare both and see which
one you prefer, before throwing one away!

I'm afraid that by this point in time I now forget the details what the
particular problems were, though (I did think I muttered about them on an
Amazon review, but I had a brief hunt there and couldn't find my comments!)

Pretty much all the other albums I compared seemed like clear improvements
though - e.g. Phaedra's 1980 CD had some dreadful digital clipping which was
nicely fixed on the 'Definitive Edition' remaster.

Well, I dipped my toe in the water with the remastered CD of Kraftwerk's "Autobahn".
I have to say I was appalled by the amateurish job.
Whilst they hadn't f*cked with the dynamics (plus point) and they had usefully removed some pretty obvious mains hum from some of the quieter tracks on side two (again, a plus point), they'd also applied utterly ham-fisted noise/hiss reduction, totally cranking the settings too far so that there are now really glaringly obvious digital "gurgle-wurgle" artefacts all over it. It's a total schoolboy error, and I really struggle to understand how a band so conscientious about "sound" could let something like that go on mass release!

As for the sound quality of Tangerine Dream "definitive edition" masters -
do bear in mind how those original recordings were made!  A lot of the sound sources are *mellotrons*, which involve low-bandwidth 5th generation tapes with wonky capstans! (lol which is what makes them sound so GOOD! ;)   ..... and there's tons of tape-echo and filtering and all manner of electric junk and endless overdrubs:  and bounced down onto 2" tape (1/4" in some cases) - it's amazing they sound as good as the do at all!

Yeah, Virgin really cocked up the liner notes pretty bad.

And I don't know much about Kraftwerk, but Ive heard some of the Klaus Schulze remasters, and they sound amazing. I don't have both versions to compare side-by-side, but if the originals sound anything like the remasters, then man, that guy had more advanced production in those days than TD or Alan Parsons or maybe anyone else for several years after that. That opening track on Dig It alone (doesn't get enough recognition, for one) is just so clear and smooth, yet full and punchy at the same time ... very impressive.

If that's just due to remastering, then whoever it is in charge of that should start redoing a lot of other artists' material as well.

Never had others rather than all the "definitive edition" `s, so thanks
for you review. I still think the "definitive`s" sound could have been
much better, all of them are OK but pale a bit compared to my other
remasters such as Klaus Schulze`s and Kraftwerk, with fantastic sound
quality and with complete and mistakes-free liner notes !
