Depending on what you want to achieve you might be happy with a
directory with the sticky bit set, or with a bind mount if the
underlying fs allows options such as umask= or uid=. There is a FUSE
module called bindfs that seems to allow specifying owner and rights.
If you have interest in exporting the dir outside the machine, then as
Aubuti said Samba will help. NFS will do that too. (I suppose you can
use NFS/Samba within the localhost… never tried that :)

In any case, I think you solution would probably include creating an
extra group and/or user. Usually when you can't get the authorizations
right, it's because groups need some mending.

(Brute force can help as well. I've sometimes used a script activated
via the automounter or some other application to execute some random
task before mounting a share. A cron job will fix anything, in time.)

Umask seems useful . Thank you :)

But it is set per user and not per folder .

The tricky part is that I want every file created in a certain directory
have a set of permissions .

A file created elsewhere should be created with the usual permissions .

I'll investigate more...

    <link>http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.music.equipment.slimdevices.unix/20094</link>
    <description>&lt;pre&gt;
I've managed to solve the problem by using logitechmediaserver and
installing a few extras. I'm still not entirely sure what caused the
issue with SBS in the first place, but I'm sure part of the problem (at
least where LMS is concerned) is that the table stuctures/ tables differ
between SBS 7.6x which is what I was previously running and what LMS
expects to see. A further complication (that shouldn't be) is that I
use a symbolic link to point SBS/LMS to a different drive and folder
that houses the DB.

As I boot my Microserver from a USB stick my SBS/LMS DB is located on a
hard drive. This is achieved by symbolic linking
/var/lib/squeezeboxserver/cache to /diskpool/d1/audiolib/zSqueezeDB/.  I
couldn't get SBS to run regardless of what I did (i.e. with or without
the symlink in place). I then decided to try LMS and got the same result
- it wouldn't start.

Googling for "Squeezebox Server died. Restarting." returned
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Debian_Package as a link, in which
I found a solution that got LMS up:
Code:
--------------------
    apt-get install libgd-gd2-perl
--------------------
 &amp;lt;--- apparently this was a solution for the same problem in Ubuntu
Server 8.10 Intrepid Ibex.

Following the above I reinstalled LMS and it fired up as expected. I
then took it offline, deleted all my previous SBS data from
/diskpool/d1/audiolib/zSqueezeDB/, moved the contents of the
/var/lib/squeezeboxserve/cache/ to /diskpool/d1/audiolib/zSqueezeDB/,
removed the cache folder and replaced it with a symlink to
/diskpool/d1/audiolib/zSqueezeDB/. Thereafter I pointed LMS to /tmp for
the library (this is to minimise the ridiculous autoscan that kicks in
whilst you're still setting preferences) and proceeded to reconfigure
LMS to suit my preferences. After applying all the changes (other than
pointing to my music library) I stopped and restarted LMS, following
which I pointed it to my library - it's now doing a rescan that reflects
my preferences and is going to take the better part of 5 hours before
it's useable again.

Ok, I just installed logitechmediaserver from testing main on my Ubuntu
12.04 64 server box and it's running fine. I'm guessing that you might
be missing some dependency. Try using this script to start lms from a
terminal prompt. It should help you debug startup issues.

logitechmediaserver-debug.sh

Code:
--------------------

  #!/bin/bash
  # Script to debug running of squeezeboxserver/logitechmediaserver

  INSTNAME='squeezeboxserver'
  INSTUSER='squeezeboxserver'

  if [ -e ${PIDFILE} ]; then
  rm ${PIDFILE}
  fi

  echo "Attempting to start ${INSTNAME}.."
  echo " Console output redirected to ${OUTFILE}.."

If you did the apt-get remove --purge after you installed LMS, that is a
known bug in the installer. You need to remove and then reinstall LMS.

Just installed Ubuntu Server 12.04 64 bit on my Microserver and
installed Squeezeboxserver using the following:

/etc/apt/sources.list:
Code:
--------------------

  # Squeezebox
  deb http://debian.slimdevices.com testing main
--------------------

To remove any remnants of previous installs:

Code:
--------------------
    sudo apt-get remove --purge squeezeboxserver &amp;amp;&amp;amp; sudo apt-get install squeezeboxserver
--------------------

The installation goes fine but Squeezeboxserver never comes out of a
coma. Looking at /var/log/squeezeboxserver/server.log the first entry
reads:
Code:
--------------------
    2012-05-20 10:08:32 squeezeboxserver_safe started.
--------------------

following which all there is, is a continuous string of entries that
read:

Code:
--------------------
    2012-05-20 10:08:37 Squeezebox Server died. Restarting.
  .
  .
  .
  2012-05-20 11:44:24 Squeezebox Server died. Restarting.
  2012-05-20 11:44:29 Squeezebox Server died. Restarting.

--------------------
  It looks like it tries to restart every few seconds.

I've not idea what could be causing it, any tips?

    <description>&lt;pre&gt;
Problem solved. I have a (simple) linux firewall installed. This
prevents incoming tcp/udp. I guess I didn't install or set this up this
previously.

Permitting incoming calls from my Vortexbox has fixed the problem, but
the error message I was getting was unhelpful to say the least!

This worked for me up until now. I now have a weird problem.

For several reasons I had to re-install my ubuntu system as a true
dual-boot OS on my PC (previously it was a installed within the windows
file system). This is 12.04, 64 bit.

Installing the tarball did not go as smoothly as before. First it
claimed it could not find libjpeg.so.62. synaptic was no help, since it
seemed to be already installed, so I downloaded it again from
http://packages.ubuntu.com/precise/i386/libjpeg62/download and
reinstalled it. That problem went away.

I then struggled to find a way to add a startup shortcut to my desktop,
or a menu, or anywhere.... ubuntu 12.04 has been cut back to remove a
lot of things which I used first time round in 11.04 (and also under
Debian). I eventually solved this - another story.

I did the no pulseaudio fixes, and set the sound devices and got
squeezeplay to start cleanly, except.....

When ssqueezeplay starts it quotes a pin number at me, and asks me to
enter it a jive.squeezenetwork.com. There is no way to proceed without
doing this. Starting squeezeplay from a terminal so I can see what is
wrong, it says the squeezeplay is regeistered to another account:

Code:
--------------------

  20120518 22:38:15.162 WARN net.comet - Comet.lua:888 Comet {mysqueezebox.com}: _response, /1X6612add31542f581b3c34c089c2e4eb9X0016176e1066X0X1337380694X02b33af2/slim/request id=3 failed: This player is already linked to another SqueezeNetwork account.

--------------------

What's this all about? I have no idea what is happening. I used to be
able to install this tarball and connect to my SB (now a Vortexbox) and
to my SB account, but it now gives me no chance to do this.

I'm having this same problem. LMS is not finding IP address for
mysqueezebox.com although I can reach it in my browser, as well as ping
it in the terminal.

Here's the server log:

here's line 1114 in DNS.pm referred to in log:

1114      my $sa = AnyEvent::Socket::pack_sockaddr (DOMAIN_PORT,
$server);

Any suggestions?
