It can be used stand-alone, without any relation to the web. In
order to get CL-EMB's output to the browser, you need to call it
from within your favorite web framework/tool and feed the results
the way (stream, string) it's needed.

CL-EMB isn't PHP. You could compare it to one aspect of PHP:
templating and embedding code into text files.

CLHP <http://common-lisp.net/project/clhp/> wants to be more like
PHP. But the project seems to be a bit more quiet than CL-EMB.

If you like Hunchentoot you could modify the test code and
replace CL-WHO with CL-EMB, just to get a feel how to work this
way.

There's some code in CL-WIKI that uses CL-EMB, too. But I don't
know if it's working with Hunchentoot.

Stefan

Stefan,

You are right, the CL-PPCRE included in Lispbox is an older version (much
older, it would seem, given the changelog you quoted). I downloaded and
installed the latest version (1.2.14) and the error no longer occurs.

Thank you!

CL-EMB is a library to embed Common Lisp and special template

You can download it from

or install with ASDF-Install.

CL-USER> (asdf-install:install :cl-emb)

Changes:

- Faster file reading (fast slurping from
  <http://www.emmett.ca/~sabetts/slurp.html>)

- New template tag < at >insert for inserting (text) files.

  Example:

    CL-USER> (emb:register-emb "test13" "The file:<pre><% < at >insert textfile %></pre>")
    #<CL-EMB::EMB-FUNCTION {5894326D}>
    CL-USER> (emb:execute-emb "test13" :env '(:textfile "/etc/gentoo-release"))
"The file:<pre>Gentoo Base System version 1.6.14
    </pre>"

Changes:

- Changed internal function to escape for XML (was very slow and is
now using code from Edi Weitz)

- optimized URL encoding

- locking mechanism for threaded/multiprocessing programs
  (*LOCKING-FUNCTION*).

*LOCKING-FUNCTION* can be set to a locking function which must
accept a function as parameter. The locking function gets
called whenever CL-EMB accesses a global hash table.
IMPORTANT: The locking function must return the value of
  the function it calls!

  Example:
        (defvar *emb-lock* (kmrcl::make-lock "emb-lock")
          "Lock for CL-EMB.")

        (defun emb-lock-function (func)
          "Lock function for CL-EMB."
          (kmrcl::with-lock-held (*emb-lock*)
            (funcall func)))

        (setf emb:*locking-function* 'emb-lock-function)

OLD: (emb:execute-emb "foo" '(:language "Common Lisp"))

See the added keyword :ENV before the plist.

- Generator loops.
The additional keyword parameter GENERATOR-MAKER to EXECUTE-EMB
lets you supply a function, which returns a generator function.
  Generator functions are described on
  http://www.cs.northwestern.edu/academics/courses/325/readings/graham/generators.html

Basically these are functions which answer to command codes
:TEST (==> return true when there's no further data from the
generator), :GET (==> return current value), :NEXT (==> return
  next value)

The new template tags < at >genloop and < at >endgenloop are used to
build a loop which uses this generator function. First the
function supplied to GENERATOR-MAKER is called with the
corresponding keyword to the parameter of < at >genloop and the
value in the plist with this key. ("<% < at >genloop foo %>" ==>
first parameter :FOO, second parameter (getf env :foo)).

The loop itself tests if there are further values for
iterations by calling the generator function with the command
:TEST. Then the first value is fetched with :NEXT. (No :GET is
used at the moment.) The returned values have to be plists.

A simple example from the README:

CL-USER> (emb:register-emb "test10" "Square root from 1 to <% < at >var numbers %>: <% < at >genloop numbers %>sqrt(<% < at >var number %>) = <% < at >var sqrt %> <% < at >endgenloop %>")
#<CL-EMB::EMB-FUNCTION {581EC765}>
CL-USER> (declare (ignore key))
           (let ((i 1))
             #'(lambda (cmd)
                 (ecase cmd
                   (:test (> i n))
                   (:get `(:number ,i :sqrt ,(sqrt i)))
                   (:next (prog1 `(:number ,i :sqrt ,(sqrt i))
                            (unless (> i n)
                              (incf i))))))))
MAKE-SQRT-1-TO-N-GEN
CL-USER> (emb:execute-emb "test10" :env '(:numbers 10) :generator-maker 'make-sqrt-1-to-n-gen)
"Square root from 1 to 10: sqrt(1) = 1.0 sqrt(2) = 1.4142135 sqrt(3) = 1.7320508 sqrt(4) = 2.0 sqrt(5) = 2.236068 sqrt(6) = 2.4494898 sqrt(7) = 2.6457512 sqrt(8) = 2.828427 sqrt(9) = 3.0 sqrt(10) = 3.1622777 "

New release CL-EMB 0.2.2

CL-EMB is a library to embed Common Lisp and special template
tags into normal text files. Can be used for dynamically
generated HTML pages.

You can download it from
http://common-lisp.net/project/cl-emb/
or install with ASDF-Install.

CL-USER> (asdf:operate 'asdf:load-op :asdf-install)
CL-USER> (asdf-install:install :cl-emb)

Changes:
- Minor bugfix. Declared ENV ignorable in the generated code.
Should prevent warnings/errors regarding the defined but
  unused variable CL-EMB-INTERN::ENV
