I'm not sure that placing a very recent kernel for the basic
stable chroots is a good idea. Kernel is still the biggest part of the
system now, and is very critical to specific stuff.

But I agree, we need to resolve this. In my opinion by adding an
option: these kernel versions must be in test, then we cherry-pick
patches into stable and roll out chroot/ISO along with some notice or
even warning in /etc/motd (for example) for those owning such cards to
cast -r linux and select version not below than X.Y.Z-rcW.

Sweet GTXes[0] :) One day I'll install smgl on my 2nd HDD of GStation.

<pre>Hey there,

We're coming closer to the stable-0.61 Grimoire release, so here's some
middle-work, that helps us to test 0.60 -&gt; 0.61 upgrade process.

This release has a lot of updates (since it's based on stable-rc 0.61
Grimoire, which was renewed and cut a week ago) as well as Kernel update
to 3.0.31.

The most visible changes:

* GCC 4.6.3
* Kernel 3.0.31 (latest LTS)
* Sorcery 1.15.1 (unchanged though, just FYI)

* dropped spells:
o fping
o g++ (the spell itself no longer needed, gcc spell provides C++
functionality)
o glib2 (nothing in basesystem depends on glib2, and recent glib2
requires Python installed)
o p7zip (no longer needed for metalog -- replaced by xz, which is
included in basesystem)
o vim (replaced by powerful and yet minimal vi clone -- elvis)

* new spells:
o elvis
o ntfs-3g (adds NTFS support)
o gdisk (adds fdisk with GPT support and other nice tools)
o popt (required by gdisk)
o minicom (useful tool for playing with COM when you set up BIOS
console redirection, etc. Also inspired by this message[0])

so it's still 131 of them.

Images are available for download from our general download page[1].
Feel free to test and report[2].

If nothing critical is found, this release will become our new
0.61-stable chroot image for preparing new installation ISO.

stable-rc-0.61 REcut and ready for testing (dub 2)

<pre>Hi everyone,

stable-rc 0.61 is REcut and ready for testing again.

Since we have new up-to-date chroot images now, the process of testing
an upgrade from 0.60 to 0.61 should go smoothly.

The release target is *June 15th*. It will take a bit more time than
usually, cause we had a notable pause from previous stable release.

The tarballs have been signed and uploaded to our server and will be
propogating out to the mirrors within six hours.

To download the grimoire manually, get
http://codex.sourcemage.org/stable-rc.tar.bz2 or specifically
http://codex.sourcemage.org/stable-rc-0.61.tar.bz2 .

GPG signatures are available at
http://codex.sourcemage.org/stable-rc.tar.bz2.asc or
http://codex.sourcemage.org/stable-rc-0.61.tar.bz2.asc .

As always don't forget to file any bugs against our issue tracker[0] so
we can resolve them and integrate the fixes before release. New version
'0.61-rc' is still there, so use it when submitting the bugs.

Let's give this new stable-rc a good testing!

<pre>Hello, Valley!

So here it comes. Finally I got finished this work, and this is it.

New polished chroot images for both architectures -- i686 and x86_64
with all essential programs on them to make SMGL installations a bit
easier on modern hardware :)

Kernel version (as per 0.60-stable grimoire) is *3.0.0*.

The most low-level stuff (usually RAID controllers, HDD and file
subsystems) is compiled-in, the rest is available in modules (&gt;2500),
so it should boot almost everywhere now.

Every spell is compiled from scratch with generic optimizations (no
extra flags and specific arch specs) for both architectures
respectively.

The contents is based on our current cauldron ISO's spell-list[0] plus
our preferences discussed here and on IRC plus some user advices plus my
own experience during the last years of Source Mage' [con|dis]tribution.

No extra stuff (like ten text editors), but we should discuss and fix
this spell-list for the next chroot image, which will be based on
0.61-stable grimoire, I believe.

* diagnostic networking stuff: ping, fping, traceroute, host, nslookup,
whois, dig, socat, tcpdump, telnet
* minimal cron and acpi daemons
* castfs by default
* tmux

ccache is included but turned off in sorcery.

everything with default configurations, except one thing:
*shadow's encrypt method is set to sha512*.

I also prepared a guide about bringing images to real life[1].
bzipped tarballs are available[2] on our mirrors, and since there's a
modern tendency, xzipped ones are there too.

all of them are signed with my usual Source Mage signing key:
0F16 05A9 65BE 20DF 0BBA 21C6 5B0A A677 447D 316C

I hope with Cauldron team we could make an ISO on a basis of these
images and roll out SMGL installation ISOs with kernel 3.0 or even 3.2
soon.

Hope you liked it,
thanks!

p.s. as usually: comments and yelling (positive and negative) are welcomed :)
p.p.s. you know what thing has made this possible. David knows.

stable-rc-0.61 REcut and ready for testing

<pre>Hi everyone,

stable-rc 0.61 is REcut and ready for testing. It's REcut, cause during
some of consequences the "old" one has become a bit deprecated, so the
better idea is to merge our current work in test and refresh release
candidate branch for our next stable grimoire release.

The release target is March 15th.

The tarballs have been signed with my regular smgl key (447D316C) and
uploaded to our server and will be propogating out to the mirrors
within six hours.

To download the grimoire manually, get
http://codex.sourcemage.org/stable-rc.tar.bz2 or specifically
http://codex.sourcemage.org/stable-rc-0.61.tar.bz2 .

GPG signatures are available at
http://codex.sourcemage.org/stable-rc.tar.bz2.asc or
http://codex.sourcemage.org/stable-rc-0.61.tar.bz2.asc .

As always don't forget to file any bugs against our issue tracker[0] so
we can resolve them and integrate the fixes before release. I've just
also created new version '0.61-rc' there, so use it when submitting the
bugs.

I hope we will discuss and form/renew/update the spell-list (for testing
and for basesystem as well) according to our new release process in a
week or so. Afterthat we might try to automate testing process and
create fresh chroot-images for both x86 and x86_64 arches.

Let's give this new stable-rc a good testing!

Sorcery 1.15.0 Released!

<pre>Sorcery 1.15.0 has finally been released! Yep, check the date. A long time has
passed since the inception, so the changelog is long and full of bugfixes,
optimisations and new features. Thanks to all involved!

The release notes are worst viewed on the wiki at
http://sourcemage.org/projects/sorcery/wiki/ReleaseNotes1150

Here are just the big highlights:
* sorcery queue and queue-security are now much faster by avoiding disk IO
(~10 times in my case) and optionally (default: VERBOSE_QUEUING=on) more
verbose. It displays all the reasons why the particular spell is being put
into the queue. For security updates it states if there was more than one.
    * as a side effect, also cast -Z is much faster when searching for possible
updates (look it up, it is very handy)
* partly improved resurrect: better resurrection and its integration into the
casting process
    * a new tool (called resurrect) specifically for dealing with resurrecting
(downgrades, upgrades, cache manipulation)
* timing functionality. It can be accessed via gaze time, gaze time-system and
their subcommands. The functions print various casting times. Especially gaze
time --full can be useful for estimating future casting time.
* the spell's FINAL outputs are duplicated at the end of cast
* when a spell fails, a short reason for the failure is displayed in the
summary
* improved cleanup algorithm when a spell fails in the dependency resolution
part of cast
* conflicts and security questions are now asked during the dependency
resolution phase
    * the conflicts are then dispelled right before the spell is cast or
resurrected

IMPORTANT: To get any of the benefits of staging, you need to install castfs.
IMPORTANT: Don't forget there is now a new cool tool called resurrect.

This release also marks a new development stream, so if you want to work on
any (new) features, the time is right. Bugzilla, users and me are full of
ideas. There are already a few projects submitted to bugzilla, but most need a
bit more work and polish. In any case, there's plenty of fun or painful stuff
to work on and I'd gladly help with any of it.

My plan for 1.16 is to work on (more or less) what is filed on
bugzilla/chillizila, especially if it has attachments. And maybe the
completion of improved resurrect.

Go forth and testify. But first wait for the mirrors to sync. :)
