(though not too useful, unless you are into writing biblical Hebrew poetry) I still dream that one day, we'll have hspell generate all words with their correct niqqud, nicely fitting into the back end of your program. Until that day (in which temperatures in hell would surely drop), I'd be happy to play with your program as it is. I hate to discourage you, but not much quality dotted text is being generated in our era. Therefore I suspect that your freedb idea would fail. Shalom everyone, I have recently written a small gtk-perl program that allows adding nikud to Hebrew text as follows: 0. A script is run that prepares a hebrew haser to nikud db by parsing all text with nikud from the machon-mamre web site. This step creates a text file containing the hebrew haser word as a key and a list of all nikud combinations as a value. (A piece of trivia is that the word in the Tenach with the most different ways of nikud is Dalet, Bet, Reish that has 22 different spellings). 1. The text is typed or copied into the program without nikud. 2. The nikud tool is activated this selects the first word of the text. 3. A set of buttons are created with all the different spellings of the word. Pressing the button chooses that spelling and replaces the original word. That's it. My question is if there already exists a similar free program, or if there is any interest should clean it up and release it? I realize that there are additional improvements that may be made that will use grammatical rules to split prefixes from the indexed word, or e.g. use of hspell. Here is another example of living languages indicating how difficult things can be to decide where the boarder is. Consider the character: ä which is in use e.g. in Swedish, Norvegian, and German. Unicode encodes this character as a unity, even though it also encodes the a and the accent umlaut " (actually two dots) separately. But for most non-latin scripts the accents (and other marks) are not precomposed with the base character, Hebrew being one example. So it might be claimed that the ä should not have a separate encoding. Now here is where things gets tricky, because in Swedish (of which I am a native speaker) å, ä, and ö have been upgraded to character status and they are tucked at the end of the alphabet. (It's a good thing to know this if you are looking for a name in a Swedish phonebook since its affects the alphabetic ordering!) But in German ä is an a with accents. I guess it might be claimed that the different ä are not the same character. In short, the languages and scripts of the world are so messy, so that the best Unicode can do is to provide something that works (which I think it does very well). יוניקוד אמור לתמוך גם בשפות לא חיות וגם מלאכותיות, וכמה וכמה כאלה כבר הוגדרו. לרוב כתבים חיים מקבלים קודים בתחום ה-16 ביט (מתחת ל-10000) וכתבים היסטוריים מקבלים קודים מ-10000 והלאה. כמו ששי כבר אמר, נכון חוץ מהמקרים שלא נכון. המקרים שלא נכון בעיקר כולל גליפים שהוגדרו בסטנרדים אחרים ורצו להעביר את כל מה שקיים בסטנדרד הישן ליוניקוד בלי להשמיט, אבל יש גם מחלוקות רבות על מה הגבול בין שינוי גופן לשינוי צורת כתב. בפועל כתב רש"י וכתב יד מודרני נחשבים לשינוי גופן, אבל כתב עברי עתיק כן מקודד ביונקוד בנפרד בתור "פיניקית", ויש תוכניות לקדד גם שומרונית. כך למשל אין סימן נפרד ---- Ivrix-discuss list. שלום גם לך! יש כמה סוגים של הניקוד הבבלי (ויש גם סומנים מיוחדים לשומרונים...) ההצות כבר קיימות זמן מה, אבל טרם נתקבלו, ראה: http://std.dkuug.dk/jtc1/sc2/wg2/docs/n2839.pdf http://std.dkuug.dk/jtc1/sc2/wg2/docs/n2838.pdf לצערי אף אחד מהפונטים אינו כולל סימנים של השיטות האלה אפילו לא ב"תחום הפרטי" ("private area") של היוניקוד... (כבר חשבתי על זה שאנבה להוסיף את הסימנים למשל ל"קולמוס", אבל אין לי שומ נסיון עם עשיית פונטים...)

Hello Munish, fribidi does the reordering of the characters necesarry for the correct display of LTR and RTL languages according to the Unicode convention. If you want to display the resulting string than you need to reorder the glyphs accordingly. If you want to mouse input then things get even more complicated since you need to do hit detection etc. It would help if you would display your system. Is it embedded? What GUI do you have? Or is the reordering for printing? Perhaps you can use gtk or at least pango instead. Dear List, as a long-term hater of building in source directories, I've patched the hspell Makefile.in (and a few other bits and pieces) to allow building in a separate directory, in the Autotools way. If there's a source repository against which I could check for recent changes, I've missed it. I'm therefore patching against the 1.0 release. I introduce two new dependencies: (a) I use VPATH. Really, separate building is ugly as sin without it. This is a user-oriented conference, so "how to install" is out - too technical. i18n/l10n-Hebrew might also be too technical unless you stick to the user-side view - that is, what software supports Hebrew and what doesn't, why some software does not support Hebrew well, who is doping the Hebrew support for various, and why there is no free Outlook yet.
