CF card not detected in PCMCIA adapter

I have a CF card plugged into a SanDisk CompactFlash PC Card Adapter
inserted into the PCMCIA slot of an X40 ThinkPad running grml 1.1
(installed to hard disk).

The CF card shows up fine when used in conjunction with a USB
cardreader or an ide-CF adapter. But with the PCMCIA adapter it
doesn't seem to be detected; the CF card does not show up under
/dev/disk/by-id.

Booting the machine with the CF-card/PCMCIA-adapter inserted causes
the boot process to hang at "Waiting for /dev to be populated..."

Booting first then inserting the CF-card/PCMCIA-adapter I see:

Henning,

There is no need to generate hypothetical problem scenarios. Why else
do you think I sent this font to the list, with special attention on
that restriction? Because the font as published will never go into
Debian, and the grml list reaches console users who might like it
anyway. So, trying to be helpful here. A "thank you" would be nice.

If he gets many requests for GPL|BSD|CreativeCommons|SIL licensing, then
he might consider it. No more private cc's about Debian license
politics; that is why lists exist. With so much free stuff on the web
under so many license arrangements, it's debatable what combination
minimizes "work". Debian's Firefox debacle comes to mind.

He put endless hours of work into something provided free, which
deserves thanks. Hat tip to Frugalware news #29 for spotting the font.

Peter <vmail< at >mycircuit.org>:

I don't know, if I get your question quite right...

You mean another program to read the mails cron sends to you?

Are you doing this?
    % mail

If so, you can use about every mail user agent, you want to. Just tell
it, where the mailbox is that gets all the mails from cron.

Unless you did change the default setup (and it sounds like you
didn't), it is likely to be in /var/spool/mail/<username>; which is an
mbox type file, that is supported by virtually every MUA out there.

If I did not understand your question correctly, rephrase.

Regards, Frank

Inconsolata is a (rather nice IMO) free monospace font:
http://levien.com/type/myfonts/inconsolata.html
http://packages.debian.org/sid/ttf-inconsolata

It's designed more for high-resolution rendering in print rather than
screen use (not sure if it has box-drawing symbols). But Fontforge and
Spiro sources are available, and the license allows user modification.

Is the SIL Open Font License free enough to allow inclusion in GRML?

Which is a quite restrictive license....

If GRML would do that work for every little nice thing that is not
free as used in the term "free software", it would be a lot of work to
track these permissions etc., so I guess it's smart to use only real
free stuff...
Additionally, it would make redistribution of grml by other people
problematic, legally, if only the main grml team gets this special
allowance...

(just my opinion as non-developer)

I use it for PowerPC admin (32 and 64).

Grml CD has previously included two versions of Python, for example.
Size-wise, two kernels is not a big deal.

Wireless Configuration Problem

I recently switched from wired to wireless networking on my
2.6.23-grml hard disk system. I configured wireless while the
wired networking card was still in my laptop and connected. I'm
sure I had wireless working because I set the cable modem on my
ethernet port offline.

Now I've removed my wired networking equipment and GRML doesn't
configure wireless networking. After a "modprobe bcm43xx" and
"ifup eth1" the syslog records:

Microcode bcm43xx_microcode4.fw not available or load failed

That file is still in /lib/firmware, and its date predates the
removal of my wired networking hardware.

"grml-network" doesn't see eth1, but "iwconfig" does.

I'm guessing that GRML loaded additional code at boot when
it found a wired ethernet connection.

grml on Asus eee-pc 700 -- Alsa problem

Hello listmembers,

I bought an eee-pc 700 and installed grml, since although I'm by no means a system admnistrator it provides me with exactly the software
I need in everyday life! The installation went fine and I set up a nice lightweight system using wmii as a windowmanage -- grml sems to be the ideal solution for a rather slow mini computer!

One problem remains: I can't get the sound started. While there seems to be no problem configuring Alsa with alsaconfig, alsamixer gives me:

alsamixer: function snd_mixer_load failed: Invalid argument

and amixer says:

amixer: Mixer default load error: Invalid argument

Now, I've googled the problem and read that this can happen due to incompatible versions of the kernel and alsa. But that's impossible in this case, since on other computers, grml works out of the box .

The sound card is: 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family)

Does anyone in the list have a clue? And is there anybody else using rml on an eee-pc?

Thanks in advance,

David

Bits from the Debian Eee PC team

Ben Armstrong [26]reported on the current activities of the [27]Debian
Eee PC team: Debian's next release Lenny will work with all of the
earliest models of the Eee PC and the Eee PC team hopes to soon realize
its goal of a completely DFSG free system for the earliest models of
the Eee Pc. Newer models are now able to install using the atl1e
ethernet driver from eeepc.debian.net; support for wireless and other
aspects of the new hardware will follow soon. The wireless custom
Debian-installer is also making good progress. There are currently two
Debian-live USB images available: a demo of the [28]LXDE desktop (a
lightweight desktop environment that is made with the Eee PC in mind)

always looking for new members to contribute to Debian's support for
the Eee Pc.
