Hi Mike,

The presentation at LAC last year had quite a lot of details:

http://lac.linuxaudio.org/2011/papers/42.pdf

The main challenge for us has been making maintenance of a community
distro sustainable. We continue to use the OpenDAW base for commercial
products, but not as much of that work as I'd like feeds back into the
community distro.

If you have ideas about how we could manage a community development
process (something we've never really had much of), I would be very
interested to hear them. Some of the larger distros have a full-time
community manager post, but we're not in a position to have that.

Cheers!

Daniel

Pro-audio on Linux becomes better and better, but the environments
become more and more painful.

Flashy and unusable DEs, an "experimental" graphics driver that doesn't
work for half of the Linux community replacing a stable driver,
pulseaudio put the blame on ALSA ... to whom ever you write regarding to
the tons of issues, they push you from Billy to Jack.

And myths grow, such as "we don't compile the kernel with the HPET
module, since it could cause issues" ... if so, people simply shouldn't
load the module manually ... "PA is needed by some apps, we just follow
upstream, you can use jack-DBUS" ... "blabla..." Maintainers that
obviously don't use what they build. Not a new issue, but a growing
issue.

Manpower could get wasted, if working apps need to be rewritten, because
e.g. a GTK version might be dropped etc..

The major problem still is the argument that most users are comfortable
with Linux today. Yes, most users are computer nerds, the computer is a
toy for them, less people do serious work and nobody cares about all the
users who test Linux and than switch back to another OS, because Linux
didn't run stable. City administrations in Germany switched from Windows
to Linux and now they switch back to Windows.

Ignorance about what is possible today:

http://lists.linuxaudio.org/pipermail/linux-audio-user/2012-February/083285.html
http://lists.linuxaudio.org/pipermail/linux-audio-user/2012-February/083287.html

It's unbelievable what I could do with my iPad 2 if I would use a Mac
DAW. I hoped to do a jailbreak and run Android on the iPad or to sell it
and to get an Android tablet, but there seems to be no interest by the
non-audio Linux community to use the advantages of new technology,
instead they copy all that flash crap.

2 Cents,
Ralf

Off-list I get some nice contacts from the Debian community, from a job
offer for Google when I was jobless, to people who still know music like
the sound from Radio Birdman.

But Debian as distro for pro-audio was a PITA for me. After installing
Debian I need to buy a new mouse, since my PS/2 didn't work anymore. An
USB mouse was ok, but some upgrades later the USB mouse and the keyboard
didn't work anymore.

If such issues are fixed for OpenDAW, among other issues the nv driver
always should be available, than Debian would be a good choice.

I would like to read it.

Ralf

Perhaps the best choice for everybody who prefer 32-bit architecture. I
prefer 64-bit. FWIW I also prefer Xfce to LXDE.

There are tons of other audio distros that IMO are no worth to test.

Ubuntu Studio seems to be the less nasty. I hope the next LTS will do it
for me.

Hahaha :D

I'm in a similar situation.

For Debian I experienced issues with keyboard and mouse all the times,
when I was tired of fixing all the non-audio issues that Debian has got
on my machine, I switched to Arch Linux.
I had no steady job since April 2011. Since February 15 I'm working for
childcare again, hence I don't have the time to set up a DAW on Arch
Linux, because even the AUR repository doesn't provide what I need.
I'm still interested in hard real time for MIDI, so no HPET is a no-go
for my needs. For Arch Linux there's a complete mess of the path for
modules by different kernels, which makes the NVIDA situation more
complicated.
Since I own a RME PCIe card I can't use oldish installs, even for Debian
testing I needed to compile ALSA when I started to use it. Fortunately
Robin showed me a cool way to build the ALSA packages for Debian. I need
Wi-Fi for an iPad 2. I didn't buy, but won it. That's the reason I
either way had to switch away from Arch, since I wasn't able to get my
USB Wi-Fi adaptor working on Arch. On Ubuntu it works OOTB. I started
with Mint Lisa (Oneiric) at February 11 and switched to Ubuntu Studio
Oneiric at February 12 ;).
Today I'll continue to set up Oneiric.

I miss 64 Studio. My stable DAW was, theoretically still is Edubuntu
Maverick + Ubuntu Studio meta packages + a lot of self build things. By
the way, it has got no MIDI jitter.

For the ALSA sequencer timer I use HPET:

sudo chgrp audio /dev/hpet
sudo chmod g+rw /dev/hpet
sudo modprobe snd-hrtimer

For hw MIDI out, PCI and PCIe only I run:

jackd --sync -Xalsarawmidi -dalsa -r$sample_rate -p$frames_period
a2jmidi_bridge

Dunno if jack1 today can do it too, IIRC Stéphane add it to jack2 svn
1.9.7 a long time ago. Unfortunately there's or at least was no bridge
to use for MIDI in.

FWIW for new partitions and installs I'm not using ext4 anymore, since
data recovery doesn't work good enough. I'm using ext3 again, dunno if
it's really more safe. I also switched back to GRUB legacy, I'm not
willing to use GRUB2 any longer. I always remove PA from new installs
and I fear that I'll have to compile the nv driver.

Regards,
Ralf

I now use Ardour2 and JACK on a Mac, however, I'm still am a big supporter
of the linux DAW idea and didn't know about OpenDAW or AVLinux.

Nice to see that I am not the only nostalgic one.

< at >Robin: Thanks for the concise answers to the questions from the
'developers' point of view. What you said is basically what I did, just
with a couple of extra tasks added to make it all work as it should.

< at >everyone: This weekend I will spend some time to compile a quick guide,
and also a list of stuff to do to get the next "64 studio" Debian ISO off
the ground. Perhaps in a few weeks time one could simply download the ISO,
and roll with it.

Cheers,
Quentin

OpenDAW is debian/squeeze based. Basically all that OpenDAW adds is a
few backports from wheezy+sid. The 64studio packaging team (Daniel,
Alessio, Free and me) moved on to directly package for Debian; and
64studio.com runs a "backporter" to automagically backport those
packages to squeeze=OpenDAW.

deb http://apt.64studio.com/backports squeeze-backports main
deb-src http://apt.64studio.com/backports squeeze-backports main

Oh and OpenDAW throws in some distro pre-seeding to make the default
debian installer more "pro-audio" friendly. ..and yes, it installs JACK2
by default.

There's also an old - but very robust real-time kernel - in OpenDAW
which will at some point be superseeded by the /official/ debian RT
kernel. The latter is already really good but not quite "64studio
quality", yet.

rgareus< at >opendaw:/tmp$ uptime
01:32:09 up 127 days, 21:05, 11 users, load average: 1.02, 1.05, 1.05
rgareus< at >opendaw:/tmp$ jack_bufsize
32
zero x-runs since bootup with linux-2.6.33.7.2-rt30. We have not yet
managed that with a 3.2 kernel under load.

AVlinux is much more relaxed when it comes to licensing. 64studio was
very conservative when it came to codecs and non-free software, etc.
OpenDAW is following DFSG, too.

"If you know what you are doing, you'll be given more to do." :) The
64studio team fell for that and is very active in the wider scope of
multi-media production solutions - mainly through sourcefabric.org
(airtime, newscoop) and was on slashdot.org today with BookType.

With the advent of a countless audio/video distributions, we felt the
best way to support the community is to work upstream at debian and
linuxaudio.org, rather than maintain yet-another-linux-distro.

In short: Go for Debian.

The long story begins.. Around 2009, there's been some corporate
interest which motivated to re-name the 64studio distro into OpenDAW.
Back then it was hard [for Daniel] to announce things before the deal
was closed. At LAC 2010 sourcefabric came up and the deal was no longer
interesting, so we silently released OpenDAW beta to the public a year
later, yet somehow the announcement was lost to Fukushima or sth more
important. "life is what happens while you're busy making other plans."

As things look now, OpenDAW will likely be merged completely into
Debian, although no-one has yet stepped up and created a cdebconf
flavor, that's why there's still opendaw.iso images; besides, we still
like the option to create custom distros on demand; although there has
not been any until this thread popped up.

< at >Quentin: yes, please. A writeup would be welcome. It's actually exactly
what we need. I suppose we can learn a lot about what we're missing!

Cheers!

just going to download a 2 year old debian iso, and start building my own
packages to get current versions of multimedia applications, i might just
choose to install debian, and go from there. also, AVlinux really fills
the niche that 64studio once held for me..

Quentin, im glad to see you are enjoying openDAW.. but unless i see

Hi Quentin,

A write up would be great.

I also went distro hopping, was using Ubuntu Studio 10.10, but after the
upgrade to 11.10 (I put off the previous upgrade, too much trouble to
bother with), I went back to Debian. I like Debian, but it took me a
while to figure out how to get my firewire sound card to work with JACK,
and I'm still not sure what I did to make it happen!

Cheers!

Quinten.... What I would love... Is to get the wallpapers from DeMuDi
ported into the newest audio distro. There are by far my favorites!!!!
(and yes, i go back that far)

Oh... Glad to see someone still around. I'd given up 64 Studio as dead.
