Welcome to this year's twelfth issue of DPN, the newsletter for the
Debian community. Topics covered in this issue include:

  * Welcome to Debian GSoC Students
  * Outreach Program for Women, the result of the experiment
  * Bits from the DPL
  * Expiration of debian-multimedia.org
  * Other news

Welcome to Debian GSoC Students
-------------------------------

The Debian project is proud to announce that this year, 16 students have
been accepted into the Google Summer of Code program [1] to work on
improving Debian. This is the highest number of students accepted since
Debian started participating in this program. The list of selected
students and the projects they're working on is publicly [1]
available [2]. If you are interested in one of these projects, you are
encouraged to come and join the #debian-soc IRC channel, or to contact
the students and their mentors directly.

Outreach Program for Women, the result of the experiment
--------------------------------------------------------

Mònica Ramírez Arceda announced the result [3] of Debian participation
in the Outreach Program for Women [4]. One of the four applicants was
accepted, but also received a slot for the Google Summer of Code. As a
consequence, this internship was not used. Since the Outreach Program
for Women is run twice a year, Mònica has opened the discussion about
further Debian participation with a call for more volunteers. Join the
#debian-opw IRC channel if you are willing to help with this initiative.

Bits from the DPL
-----------------

Lucas Nussbaum sent his monthly report of DPL activities for May
2013 [5]. Among other things, Lucas reminded readers that it could still
be possible to submit talks for DebConf13, in Vaumarcus,
Switzerland [6], and called for the creation of a Debian trademark team,
handling the trademark use requests that are being received following
the publication of the Debian trademark policy [7]. He also mentioned
that discussions which occurred during the last DPL campaign have been
summarised by Brian Gupta on a dedicated page of the Debian Wiki [8],
and encouraged people to contribute to maintaining this page when ideas
are raised on Debian lists.

Expiration of debian-multimedia.org
-----------------------------------

debian-multimedia.org was a popular unofficial repository of Debian
packages. Last year, this service moved to a new domain, and despite
efforts from Debian, the debian-multimedia.org domain recently expired,
and has now been registered by someone unknown to Debian. "This is a
good example of the importance of the use of cryptography to secure APT
repositories", DPL Lucas Nussbaum said [9]. The Debian project would
like to emphasise the need to consider possible security issues when
using third-party repositories and the importance of not blindly adding
keys to the APT keyring.

Other news
----------

A Swedish municipal e-service named "Fixa Min Gata [10]" ("fix my
street" in English), used for reporting potholes, broken paving stones,
graffiti, non-functioning lamp posts, and other problems, has been
reported [11] to be powered by Debian servers.

New Debian Contributors
-----------------------

4 applicants have been accepted [12] as Debian Maintainers since the
previous issue of the Debian Project News. Please welcome Gianfranco
Costamagna, Emmanuel Bourg, Geoffrey Thomas and Prach Pongpanich into
our project!

Debian GNU/Hurd release
-----------------------

The Debian GNU/Hurd team announced the release of Debian GNU/Hurd
2013. [1] This is not an official Debian release, but it is an official
Debian GNU/Hurd port release. On the Debian Ports [2] archive you can
find the installation ISO images to download (netinst, CD or DVD), as
well as a pre-installed disk image which makes it even easier to try
Debian GNU/Hurd. Debian GNU/Hurd is currently available for the i386
architecture with more than 10,000 software packages available.
Please make sure to read the configuration information [3], the FAQ [4],
and the translator primer [5] to get a grasp of the great features of
GNU/Hurd.

DebConf 13: Call for Papers
---------------------------

Debian invites submissions [6] of proposals for papers, presentations,
discussion sessions and tutorials for its DebConf13 [7] conference which
will take place in Le Camp, Vaumarcus, Switzerland, in August.
Submissions are not limited to traditional talks: you could propose a
performance, art installation, debate, or anything else. Official
submissions will be accepted until 1 June 2013, 23:59 UTC.

    6: http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2013/05/msg00011.html
    7: http://debconf13.debconf.org/

DebConf talks will be broadcast live on the Internet where possible, and
videos of the talks will be published on the web along with the
presentation slides and papers. Regular sessions will be 45 minutes
long, including time for questions, with a 15 minute break between
events.

Debian Edu Wheezy second alpha release
--------------------------------------

Debian Edu [8], also known as Skolelinux, made its second Wheezy based
alpha release on 14 May. Aiming to provide an out-of-the box environment
of a completely configured school network, this release features a
number of software updates and fixes, which are all documented in the
release announcement [9].

Bits from the piuparts maintainers
----------------------------------

Holger Levsen sent some bits from the piuparts maintainers [11].
piuparts is an automated tool aimed at testing for errors in the
installation, upgrading and removal of.deb packages. In his mail, Holger
reported that piuparts recently received a few infrastructure upgrades,
providing considerably improved speeds for the service.
The main improvement made was moving piuparts.debian.org [12] away from
the machine piatti.debian.org to the new cluster running at
Bytemark [13].

Debian/Ubuntu Community Conference Italia 2013
----------------------------------------------

On 1-2 June 2013, the second edition of the Debian/Ubuntu Community
Conference Italia (DUCC-IT 2013) will take place in Fermo, Italy. The
experience of DUCC-IT 2013, which follows on from the first such event
held in Perugia in 2010, is aimed both at members of the two communities
and at all Free Software enthusiasts, offering an excellent opportunity
to get in touch and learn more about one another.
You can read the announcement (in Italian) and the full event schedule
on the Italian community website [14].

The Debian Project has lost a member of its community. Ray Dassen
(jdassen) died on May 18th.

Ray was a Debian Developer for an incredible 19 years. He joined the
project in 1994, and continued to be an active contributor until
recently. He was involved in Debian as a maintainer of several packages,
particularly Gnumeric, and was a driving force behind the creation of
the Debian Gnome team.

The Debian Project honours Ray's great work and his strong dedication to
Debian and Free Software. His technical knowledge and his ability to
share that knowledge with others will be missed. His contributions will
not be forgotten, and the high standards of his work will continue to
serve as an inspiration to others.

About Debian

Debian 7.0 "Wheezy" released
----------------------------

27 months after the release of Debian 6.0 "Squeeze", a new stable
version of the Debian operating system, Debian 7.0 "Wheezy", was
released on May 4, 2013 [1]. Among other improvements, this release
brings to its users multiarch support [2], various tools to deploy
private clouds [3], an improved installer supporting software speech,
which makes accessibility one of its strong points, and an expanded set
of multimedia codecs.
Adam D. Barratt, Release Team manager, has already announced a first
point release planned for next month [4] and given advice to maintainers
about further uploads to "unstable" : the development of "Jessie" is
already starting.
Joerg Jaspert, Debian FTP master, gave some insight into the workflow
needed by the FTP team to release a new stable version of Debian [5],
while Raphael Geissert noted [6] that "in the first 48 hours after its
log files were rotated last Sunday, http.debian.net [7] handled almost 2
million requests, for an average of 11 requests per second".
Meanwhile, Debian users and enthusiasts from all over the world are
organising parties [8] to celebrate the release of "Wheezy" : the
Catalan Debian community [9] and some Indian Debian users [10] already
seem to have had some fun! If you're going to have a party, share your
report and pics with us using the identi.ca hashtag #releaseparty [11].

What's new in Debian "Wheezy" ?
-------------------------------

Michael Prokop launched the #newinwheezy initiative [12] aimed at
presenting to users and fellow developers the packages that have been
newly introduced in "Wheezy". According to the Debian contributors who
joined the initiative, among the most interesting new packages are:
various forensic tools [13]; vcsh [14] ("manage config files in $HOME
via fake bare git repositories"); Charybdis [15] ("a popular and solid
IRC server which is the base of the software behind the Freenode
network"); packages from the Grml system [16]; mosh [17] (a "UDP based
remote shell terminal which works better than SSH in case of lag");
several lightweight browsers (dillo, netsurf, surf and xxxterm) [18];
libghc-stm-dev, a tool to help with writing non-buggy threaded
programs [19]; scratch [20] ("an easy, interactive, collaborative
programming environment designed for creation of interactive stories,
animations, games, music, and art") and plymouth [21] ("a boot-time I/O
multiplexer").

DebConf11 and 12 videos
-----------------------

IRILL, sponsor of Debian for DebConf videos, has published all of the
videos from DebConf11 and 12. They are available both in MP4 (H.264) and
(recommended) Ogg formats, and easily available through their video
player (DebConf11: 56 videos [22]; DebConf12: 72 videos [23]).

Debian beyond the cloud
-----------------------

Keith Chuvala, the manager of Space Operations Computing (SpOC) for
NASA, announced this week [24] that the agency will switch to Debian on
the International Space Station's laptops. Specifically, the ISS
astronauts will be using computers running Debian 6. Chuvala mentioned
they "needed an operating system that was stable and reliable", and that
they will rely on the Linux Foundation for training their astronauts and
IT specialists.

Debian in Google Compute Engine
-------------------------------

Google recently announced the availability of Debian images on its
Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Google Compute Engine [25]. At the
moment, both 6.x and 7.x versions of Debian are distributed on their
infrastructure, in order to provide an easier workload migration. For
fast performance and to reduce bandwidth costs, Google is hosting a
Debian package mirror for use by Google Compute Engine Debian instances.
As Google announced, Debian will be the default image type for Compute
Engine from now on.

Bits from the DPL
-----------------

Lucas Nussbaum sent his first monthly report of DPL activities [26].
Besides thanking the other candidates, the voters and the previous
project leader, Stefano Zacchiroli, the newly elected Project Leader
summarised his first thirteen days of activity. Lucas focused
particularly on the ongoing discussion about the Debian logo as a
registered trademark [27], planned - with the help of Moray Allan - a
survey of the main Debian teams to verify their health status, and
started work on improving and documenting paths into the project.

"Coding Freedom" : a closer look at Debian contributors
-------------------------------------------------------

Gabriella Coleman announced the recent publication of her book, "Coding
Freedom: The Ethics and Aesthetics of Hacking" [28], which was mostly
inspired by Debian's community and active members. The book strives to
identify and explain the key factors that have influenced the
development of free software projects, while examining the social impact
they have had. A good portion was based on Debian, following two years
of ethnographic research. There is one chapter dedicated to the project
and many others draw on interviews with Debian developers.
The book is available under a Creative Commons license and freely
available for download [29].

Release date for Wheezy announced
---------------------------------

Neil McGovern, on behalf of the Release Team, announced that the next
stable version of Debian, "Wheezy", will be released during the first
weekend of May (4/5 May) [1]. Help with the final touches is welcome:
"release notes, installation guides and documentation in general,
especially translations can always do with some work. Please see
previous mails on these, and help if you can", explained Neil. And to
show Debian your love, you can organise a Release Party in your
city [2].

First Qt 5 packages in experimental
-----------------------------------

Lisandro Damián Nicanor Pérez Meyer announced that the first Qt 5
packages have been accepted in the experimental suite [4]. For now they
are available only for the 64-bit PC (amd64) architecture, but soon they
will be available in the 32-bit PC flavour as well. As for the ARM based
ones, it will take a bit more time. These packages have no GLES2 or
Wayland support, but non-official packages with GLES2/Wayland enabled
will be provided at some point, for testing purposes.
As for future plans, Lisandro said that "other parts of Qt 5 are on the
way. And remember, these packages would not have been possible if it
weren't for the great Debian's pkg-kde team".

New DPL elected
---------------

Lucas Nussbaum has just been elected with a small majority [1] ahead of
his main opponent Moray Allan by the Debian Developers to represent the
project. Stefano Zacchiroli, outgoing project leader, welcomes his
successor: "I've known Lucas Nussbaum and his passionate Debian
involvement for many many years now, and I trust the Project is in good
hands with him. Good luck, Lucas!"

Debian accepted for Google Summer of Code
-----------------------------------------

For the eighth year in a row, Debian has been accepted as a mentoring
organisation [2] for Google Summer of Code [3] (SoC), proposing a number
of stipends for students aged 18 or older to write code for selected
free and open source software projects. Eligible students for this
program may consult the list of projects [4] proposed by Debian and
contact mentors in order to prepare their application. More information
is available on the dedicated wiki page [5]. If you are interested in
applying to this program, send an email to the SoC coordination mailing
list [6], or come and chat in the #debian-soc IRC channel. In order to
offer the best mentorship for students, the Debian SoC team is also
looking for co-mentors [7] for the proposed projects.

Debian participates in Outreach Program for Women
-------------------------------------------------

Mònica Ramírez Arceda announced that Debian will participate in the next
round of the Free and Open Source Software Outreach Program for
Women [8], started in 2006 by the GNOME Foundation, joined by other FOSS
organisations. Debian is proposing an internship from June to
September [9] to work on any kind of project, including coding, design,
marketing, and web development. All women who are not yet Debian
Developers or Debian Maintainers are encouraged to apply. There are no
age restrictions and applicants don't need to be students. Please
consult the dedicated wiki page [10] for details.

April 4th, 2013 http://www.debian.org/News/2013/20130404
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Earlier this week, Debian started deploying machines for its core
infrastructure services which will be hosted in a new data centre in
York, UK. The hardware, generously donated and hosted by Bytemark
Hosting [1], consists of a fully-populated HP BladeSystem (containing 16
server blades) and several HP Modular Storage Arrays (providing a total
of 57 TB).

    1: http://bytemark.co.uk

"Bytemark's servers have relied on Debian since the day we started the
company in 2002, and it was always an embarassingly good deal. We've
tried to repay it through sponsorship of the annual DebConf gatherings,
and through publication of Symbiosis (our own packages to make Debian
easier for hosting tasks)," explained Matthew Bloch, co-founder of
Bytemark. "While we can't match the unpaid efforts of the project's
thousand of volunteers, we're at least happy to be providing such a
substantial part of Debian's infrastructure. Debian's success will
continue to spur Bytemark's."

"This significant hardware and hosting donation will allow the Debian
Systems Administration (DSA) team [2] to distribute Debian's core
services across a greater number of geographically diverse locations,
and improve, in particular, the fault-tolerance and availability of end-
user facing services," said Luca Filipozzi (DSA team member).
"Additionally, the storage component of this donation will dramatically
reduce the storage challenges that Debian currently faces. Our plan is
to move several storage-intensive services to Bytemark," he continued.
"It is only through donations of time, goods and funds that the 100%
volunteer Debian Project is able to operate the critical infrastructure
necessary to support its work." Further details of which services will
be moved to this new equipment will be provided soon on the debian-
infrastructure-announce mailing list [3].

About Bytemark
--------------

Bytemark [4] has been the UK's "nerd hosting outfit of choice" since
2002. It has a history of building its own technology including BigV, a
new command-line cloud hosting platform, and Symbiosis, a set of
packages to make hosting on Debian even easier. The company powers tens
of thousands of domains around the world, and sponsors hosting for
hundreds of important free software projects including Debian,
LibreOffice and XBMC.

About Debian
------------

The Debian Project was founded in 1993 by Ian Murdock to be a truly free
community project. Since then the project has grown to be one of the
largest and most influential open source projects. Thousands of
volunteers from all over the world work together to create and maintain
Debian software. Available in 70 languages, and supporting a huge range
of computer types, Debian calls itself the "universal operating system".

  * Bits from the DSA team
  * DebConf13 matching fund
  * New Maintainer process
  * Editorial changes to the constitution
  * Interviews

Bits from the Release Team
--------------------------

Julien Cristau sent an update on Release Team activities [1], announcing
the start of the final stage of the freeze. This basically means that
from now on, there will be an even stricter policy on the changes that
can be uploaded (only fixes for release critical bugs will be accepted)
and that the Release Team will start to apply a specific usertag
(wheezy-will-remove [2]) to mark packages that will be removed from the
upcoming stable release if their RC bugs aren't fixed. In addition,
Julien gave a reminder that help is needed to finalise the Release
Notes: all users and contributors are invited to check the work in
progress [3] and help with the current issues [4].

Bits from the DSA team
----------------------

Martin Zobel-Helas sent some bits from the Debian Systems Administration
team (DSA) [5] in which he reported on the recent activities of the
team. In recent months, they have focused on the virtualisation of a
number of physical machines, creating some ganeti clusters to manage the
various virtual machines. In addition to that, the team has begun a
rewrite of its account management code base using the Django framework.
The mail ends with the thanks of the DSA team to all the donors and
hosting partners (and especially Eaton [6] and Brainfood [7]) as well as
the ganeti package maintainers, Iustin Pop and Guido Trotter.

DebConf13 matching fund
-----------------------

Didier Raboud announced matching funding for donations to DebConf13 [8].
"As part of the DebConf13 fundraising effort, a generous sponsor,
Brandorr Group [9], has proposed to match USD donations to DebConf13
until 30 April" explained Didier. Through this mechanism, for each
dollar donated by an individual to DebConf13, Brandorr Group will donate
another dollar. Individual donations will be matched only up to 100 USD
each; only donations in USD will be matched, and Brandorr Group will
match the donated funds up to a maximum total of 5,000 USD.
This initiative will continue until Tuesday 30 April; spread the word!

New Maintainer process
----------------------

Enrico Zini blogged about the gender imbalance in the New Maintainer
process [11]. Enrico noted that we still have very few women
applicants [12], despite previous efforts to encourage them to apply,
including by the Debian Women [13] project. He therefore proposed that
we adopt an affirmative action approach, and only allow one male
candidate to apply for every female one. "Since the goal is to have an
equal gender perception in Debian, we can just decide to only approve
one obviously-male-named DD for every obviously-female-named one," said
Enrico. "That's right: no new obviously-male-named DD unless an
obviously-female-named DD has just been approved."

Editorial changes to the constitution
-------------------------------------

Francesca Ciceri proposed a constitutional amendment about changing our
election system [14]. She pointed out the large amount of time wasted in
election discussions each year, and the problems in tricking other
project members into running. The proposed amendment would cancel the
current election process, and instead make Stefano Zacchiroli DPL for
life. "Democratic processes are one of Debian distinguishing traits, but
over the years we have learned not to abuse them, in particular when
they risk getting in the way of decision efficiency," commented Stefano
Zacchiroli, current Debian Project Leader. "I'm flattered of being
proposed as "DPL for life" and, if the resolution will pass, I'll do my
best to always listen to suggestions from Debian project members in
spite of the lack of elections."

Eaton [1], a global technology leader in electrical products and long
time Debian partner, has donated several large-capacity uninterruptible
power supplies (UPSs) and intelligent power distribution units (PDUs)
for Debian's core infrastructure located in Darmstadt, Germany and
Vienna, Austria.

    1: http://www.eaton.com

"Not only do we, at Eaton, strongly back the principle of freely
available open source software, we are also finding that our customers
increasingly prefer to work with open source packages, especially with
Linux and related systems," said Arnaud Quette, Eaton Opensource
Solutions Lead and Debian Developer.

"Most Debian porter machines and Debian auto-builder machines are not
equipped with out of band management access or remote power control.
Eaton's donation gives us this capability, significantly improving our
ability to operate our infrastructure efficiently and effectively,
without having to disturb the staff of our hosting partners. We are very
appreciative of this generous donation," said Martin Zobel-Helas, member
of the Debian System Administration team.

Debian Edu Squeeze updated
--------------------------

Holger Levsen announced the first update of Debian Edu Squeeze since its
initial release [1]. "This update contains all the changes between
Debian 6.0.4 and 6.0.7, as well as Debian Edu specific bugfixes and
enhancements", explained Holger. The updated installer images [2] are
available for downloading.

DPL election campaign
---------------------

This year's DPL election campaign has now officially started. Three
candidates are running for DPL this year: Moray Allan [3], Gergely
Nagy [4] and Lucas Nussbaum [5]. There is already quite an active debate
on the debian-vote mailing list [6], where people can ask the candidates
questions about their platforms. So far, the main topics discussed have
been: questions about recruitment of new contributors [7] and
mentoring [8]; the use of Debian's money [9] and the possibility of
fundraising campaigns [10] to renew Debian's core hardware
infrastructure; and possible changes to the constitutional role of the
DPL, including the creation of a DPL board [11] or changing the length
of the term of office [11].
The campaign will end on 30 March, and will be followed by a two-week
voting period. "These early days of the 2013 DPL campaign have been very
intense; as a mere voter I'm struggling to keep up with the debian-vote
backlog. Still, it's incredibly refreshing to see such a democratic
battle between volunteers eager to offer their free time as DPL.
Volunteerism in free software is in very good health, it seems", said
Stefano Zacchiroli, who has been DPL for the last three years.

A deeper look inside the freeze
-------------------------------

Lisandro Damián Nicanor Pérez Meyer blogged about his experience with
the Debian freeze [12] as a Debian Developer. Lisandro, who is a member
of the Qt/KDE team, intensified his activity during the freeze,
reviewing patches, applying them and testing the fixes. With help from
the other members of the team, Lisandro has done eleven uploads of Qt to
get it ready for the new release. He explains that during the freeze,
communication within and between teams is crucial, as the energies of
all Debian Developers are focused on releasing, and that requires a
great deal of coordination. And the team that is put under the greatest
amount of stress during the freeze is the Release Team. "From the
outside, communicating with the RT was a kind of "special art", and not
an easy one", explained Lisandro, who then lists some useful hints for
communicating with the Release Team in an effective way.

Kali Linux: a new Debian derivative for penetration tests
---------------------------------------------------------

Raphaël Hertzog blogged [13] about the birth of Kali Linux 1.0 [14], a
new Debian derivative developed by Offensive Security to be an advanced
and stable penetration testing distribution.
Mati Aharoni, lead Kali developer, explained that "Debian provides a
reliable base to build a new distribution and yet can easily be
customized to add bleeding edge features, thanks to the unstable and
experimental distributions". Raphaël, who helped the Kali team in
setting up their technical infrastructure as a Debian derivative, also
added that not only will most Kali applications be integrated into
Debian, but Offensive Security is also willing to dedicate a node of
their armhf cluster for Debian's own use.

Update for Debian 6.0: 6.0.7 released
-------------------------------------

The seventh update for Debian 6.0 (codenamed "Squeeze") [1] has been
released. This update mainly adds corrections of security problems to
the stable release, along with some adjustments for serious problems.

Call for projects and mentors for Debian GSoC 2013
--------------------------------------------------

Paul Tagliamonte, newly appointed administrator for Debian participation
in the Google Summer of Code program 2013 [2], asked all Debian
contributors for projects and mentors [3] to help Debian participate in
the initiative this year. "Everyone (member of the Debian project or
not, student or not) is welcome to submit their ideas, and to try and
find people willing to mentor the projects", explained Paul in his mail.
Information on how to submit proposals is available in the relevant wiki
page [4]. You can also contact Paul and the other GSoC administrators
for Debian on their mailing list [5] or on their IRC channel, #debian-
soc on irc.debian.org.

Wheezy release progress
-----------------------

Niels Thykier, release team member, noticed that the current pace of RC
bug fixes is slowing down [6], with only 1.1 RC bugs fixed a day since
his last report [7]. About 200 RC bugs are left to be fixed, and if the
pace of RC bug fixes does not pick up, the release team may need to
remove packages along with their reverse dependencies.

Debian at Open Source Conference 2013 Tokyo/Spring
--------------------------------------------------

Hideki Yamane reported about Debian participation at Open Source
Conference 2013 Tokyo/Spring [8] at Meisei University, in Tokyo, Japan.
Debian was present with a booth where Hideki and other contributors
talked with users and enthusiasts. Takahide Nojima delivered a talk
titled "Debian Update" focused on the latest Debian achievements.

arm64 image available
---------------------

Wookey announced the availability of the arm64 image [9]. This is the
culmination of a three year long effort to make Debian bootstrappable,
which has been used for the first time on the port to the 64-bit ARMv8
architecture. Whilst it should be considered alpha-grade for now, it
represents a great achievement: "all these packages were cross-built on
raring, untangling cyclic dependencies with build profiles making this
the first (non x86) self-bootstrapped Debian port ever", explained
Wookey. "Getting this port working has been "interesting" because it's
attempting four new things all at once: multiarch (file layouts and
dependencies), crossbuilding (tools and packaging support in a distro
that historically was always natively built), arm64 (aarch64) support in
packages that need it, and build-profiles to linearise the build-order",
he added. The current status of the bootstrap [10] is online, whilst
more information on the port (and how to build images) is available on
the wiki page of the project [11].

The Debian Project is pleased to announce that, according to the terms
of the new trademark policy [1], Debian logos and marks may now be used
freely [2] for both non-commercial and commercial purposes. The Debian
Project encourages wide use of its marks in all ways that promote Debian
and free software.

    1: http://www.debian.org/trademark#policy
    2: http://www.debian.org/intro/free

Stefano Zacchiroli, current Debian Project Leader and one of the main
promoters of the new trademark policy, said "Software freedoms and
trademarks are a difficult match. We all want to see well-known project
names used to promote free software, but we cannot risk they will be
abused to trick users into downloading proprietary spyware. With the
help of SPI [3] and SFLC [4], we have struck a good balance in our new
trademark policy. Among other positive things, it allows all sorts of
commercial use; we only recommend clearly informing customers about how
much of the sale price will be donated to Debian."

As the arrival of the new stable release, Debian 7.0 "Wheezy",
approaches, vendors are encouraged to create Wheezy-themed merchandise
(t-shirts, stickers, mugs, etc.), using the upcoming release's
artwork [5].

We further invite you to check out the current list of Debian
merchandise vendors [6], and see the information at the bottom of the

Debian Installer 7.0 RC1 released
---------------------------------

The first release candidate of the installer for Debian Wheezy was
released on 17 February [1]. Many fixes are included in this release of
the installer, along with new improvements, including better speech
synthesis support, various improvements for GNU/kFreeBSD, fixes for the
grub2 package, new supported hardware, etc.

    1: http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/News/2013/20130217

A full list of known issues with details is collected on the errata [2]
page. Everyone is encouraged to test the installer and report bugs;
media and further information are available on the Debian Installer
pages [3].

    2: http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/errata
    3: http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer

This release was delayed a few weeks because of a technical
disagreement [4] about one package. Thanks to prompt action [5] in
response to the problem, a solution has now been implemented.

700,000th bug reported
----------------------

Christian Perrier won the 700,000th bug contest [6], by betting more
than two years ago on the date of bug #700000 [7], which was recently
reported by Cédric Boutillier. He now invites everyone to
participate [8] in contests to predict the dates when Debian's 800,000th
and 1,000,000th bug reports will be filed [9].

Bits from the DPL
-----------------

Stefano Zacchiroli sent his monthly report of DPL activities for January
2013 [10]. Stefano reminded readers that the election process for the
next DPL term will start in early March, so there are only a few days
left to convince Debian developers to run. He confirmed that he will not
run again for another term. Meanwhile he is also looking for help in
organising Debian activities in the Google Summer of Code program, and
in maintaining an authoritative list of DFSG-free licenses [11]. Among
other things, Stefano also mentioned an updated policy draft for Debian
marks [12].

Reports from FOSDEM
-------------------

During the first weekend of February, the Debian Project participated at
FOSDEM 2013 [13] in Brussels, Belgium. In addition to the official
Debian booth, several project members delivered talks about different
topics: among others, Andreas Tille presented the Debian Med
project [14] (video [15]), Tollef Fog Heen and Michael Biebl gave an
overview of systemd in Debian [16] (video [17]), Samuel Thibault
reported on the GNU/Hurd architecture in Debian [18], and Ian Campbell
spoke about the future of paravirtualisation under Xen [19]. Most of the
FOSDEM talks are available as video recordings [20].

Update on Clang and Debian
--------------------------

Sylvestre Ledru posted an article on his blog about the results of
rebuilding the archive using Clang 3.2 [21]. To make the results more
visible, Paul Wise has integrated them into the Package Tracking
System [22]. In the meantime, Hideki Yamane has written a patch to make
it easier to use Clang instead of gcc when building with pbuilder [23].
You can find more information about current efforts related to building
Debian with Clang and other alternative compilers in Sylvestre's FOSDEM
talk [24].

Welcome to this year's third issue of DPN, the newsletter for the Debian
community. Topics covered in this issue include:

  * DebConf13 venue and dates
  * Automating Debian bootstrapping
  * Interviews
  * Other news
  * Upcoming events
  * New Debian Contributors
  * Release-Critical bugs statistics for the upcoming release
  * Important Debian Security Advisories

DebConf13 venue and dates
-------------------------

Moray Allan and Didier Raboud gave some updates on the upcoming
DebConf13 [1] to be held at Le Camp in Vaumarcus, Switzerland [2]. In
the blogpost, they confirmed that the conference will take place from 11
to 18 August. This year, for budget reasons, the DebCamp - during which
usually the various Debian teams meet to work on specific issues and
projects - will be held during the same week as the conference.
Registration will probably open around the start of March.

    2: http://debconf13.debconf.org/map.xhtml

In related news, the DebConf team sent a call for bids [3] for
DebConf14. If you are interested in putting forward a bid for DebConf14,
send a message to their mailing list [4]. You are also invited to think
about possible venues for DebConf15.
People interested in helping with the organisation of DebConf are
welcome to join the team, and find out how they can help by contacting
them on their mailing list [4] or on the #debconf-team channel on
irc.debian.org.

Automating Debian bootstrapping
-------------------------------

Johannes Schauer wrote a detailed report of the status of his "Port
bootstrap build-ordering tool" [5], which was started as a Debian GSoC
project last year and aims to solve cyclic build dependencies, making it
possible to automate the bootstrapping of Debian on new architectures.
Since November 2012 the project has reached some important milestones
such as providing a less "monolithic" toolset, a new dependency graph
definition, two new ways to break dependency cycles, and an adjustment
of the algorithm to allow a more precise final build order.

Interviews
----------

There has been an interview [6] with Florian Weimer of the Debian

Wheezy freeze: reviewers needed for unblock requests
----------------------------------------------------

Niels Thykier, a member of the release team, blogged about the progress
of the release process for Wheezy [5]. Wheezy has now been frozen for
almost six months. More than the total number of RC bugs, it is the
number of RC bugs fixed in unstable but not in Wheezy that worries
Niels. This situation is mainly due to "unblock" requests that none of
the members of the release team has had time to respond to. If you want
to help with the release, and don't find any RC bugs to fix, you can
review some of the unblock requests, and help to decrease the number
that remain unanswered.

Report from Bug Squashing Party in Mechlin
------------------------------------------

Wouter Verhelst published a report about the BSP [6] he organized in his
company's office in Mechlin, Belgium. A couple of RC bugs were fixed and
progress was made on a few more. Although Wouter regrets that he was the
only Belgian Debian Developer present, he was happy to welcome local
newcomers who had never contributed to Debian before. Because of this
and the fun they all had, the event can be considered to have been a
success.

Record number of participants for Mini DebConf Paris
----------------------------------------------------

The second Mini DebConf Paris [1], held over the third weekend of
November, registered a record number of participants for a mini DebConf:
more than a hundred people, including Debian Developers, contributors
and enthusiasts from all over Europe. The great success of the event was
also guaranteed by the high number of talks and workshops [2] held
during the two days, most of them recorded by the amazing DebConf Video
team (and soon available on the video website [3]). Josselin Mouette,
one of the founders of the Debian GNOME team, held an interesting talk
titled "Large deployment of GNOME from the administrator's
perspective [4]", consisting of an overview of existing mechanisms for
administrating GNOME systems. Stefano Zacchiroli, current Debian Project
Leader, presented the debian-cloud initiative [5] during the "Lightning
Talks", while Lucas Nussbaum explained how to get involved in Debian in
his five-minute "Get involved - it's not that hard [6]" talk. Ben
Hutchings and Maximilian Attems presented the work of the Linux kernel
team [7], while Cyril Brulebois explained how the Debian Installer is
created and how it works [8]. Some talks were dedicated to the community
aspects of Debian, such as Roberto Di Cosmo's "Free software and Debian,
20 years after [9]" and the accurate analysis of social interactions on
Debian mailing lists [10] by Alexandre Delanoë and Bernard Conein.

Debian on smartphones: a feasibility analysis
---------------------------------------------

Paul Wise documented how to install Debian on smartphones [11]: while
this is technically possible, the process is complicated by the fact
that the Linux mainline kernel doesn't run on many mobile devices and
the Debian Linux kernel maintainers prefer not to include non-mainline
patches. Paul concluded by saying that "the procedures I documented
above are not a great way to support mobile devices at all and could
break at any moment anyway. So everyone, please become a kernel
developer and help merge all of the many many versions of Android Linux
into Linux mainline so that you can have your favourite distribution on
your devices". The state of the art of support for running Debian on
such devices is documented on the Mobile wiki page [12], while people
interested in helping can join the discussion on the debian-mobile
mailing list [13] or simply join the #debian-mobile channel on
irc.debian.org.

Official Debian images on Amazon Web Services
---------------------------------------------

James Bromberger announced the availability of official Debian images on
Amazon Web Services [14]. Over the last few months, James and others
have been working on the creation of official images to be put on the
AWS Marketplace. After the first contact between Amazon and DPL Stefano
Zacchiroli, "a group of Debian Developers and the wider community formed
to generate a set of AMIs (Amazon Machine Images) using Anders
Ingemann’s ec2debian-build-ami script", explained James. Those who plan
to use it can find the relevant documentation on the Amazon EC2
Image [15] wiki page, while the ongoing task of creating and supporting
official images is coordinated via the debian-cloud mailing list [16].

During the third weekend of November, three simultaneous Debian Bug
Squashing Parties were held in different locations across the world: in
Tokyo, Japan [17], in Munich, Germany [18] and in Essen, Germany [19].
The next episode of the Bug Squashing Marathon for Wheezy [20] will be

Help your language reach 100% support in the Debian Installer
-------------------------------------------------------------

Christian Perrier recently sent a message to the Debian translators
mailing list [1] looking for people interested in translating the Debian
installer into the following languages: Lithuanian, Bosnian, Tamil, Lao,
Hungarian, Icelandic, Macedonian, Dzongkha, Nepali, Norwegian Nynorsk,
Albanian, Amharic, Kurdish, Tagalog, Wolof (which is currently disabled
because too many important strings are missing) and Tibetan. These
languages are almost complete, but the regular contributors have not
responded to the usual calls. Currently 55 out of 70 supported languages
have reached 100% completion, the highest number ever.

Debian Installer 7.0 Beta4 released
-----------------------------------

Cyril Brulebois announced the fourth beta release of the installer for
Debian 7.0 [2]. This release features, among other things, many updates
to the Linux kernel as well as some major improvements in the netcfg
package, which is the tool used to configure the network during the
installation. As usual, the Debian Installer team asks users to test
this new release: installer CDs, other media and everything you might
need to install Debian on one of the thirteen architectures supported
are available from the web site [3].

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome to this year's twenty-second issue of DPN, the newsletter for
the Debian community. Topics covered in this issue include:

  * Code search engine for Debian
  * Bits from the DPL
  * One step closer to "Wheezy"
  * Other news
  * Upcoming events
  * New Debian Contributors
  * Release-Critical bugs statistics for the upcoming release
  * Important Debian Security Advisories
  * Work-needing packages
  * Want to continue reading DPN?

Code search engine for Debian
-----------------------------

Michael Stapelberg announced the birth of Debian Code Search [1], a
search engine for source code within Debian. "It allows you to search
all ≈ 17000 source packages, containing 130 GiB of FLOSS source code
(including Debian packaging) with regular expressions", explained
Michael. The search engine [2] is already available for use.

Bits from the DPL
-----------------

Stefano Zacchiroli sent his monthly report of DPL activities for
October [3]: among other things, Stefano reported the boost of activity
in the recently created debian-cloud mailing list [4]. This new mailing
list is dedicated to discussions of the development and use of Debian on
public and private clouds, such as for instance the ongoing discussion
about the integration of Debian on popular clouds like Windows Azure or
the Amazon Web Services Marketplace.

One step closer to "Wheezy"
---------------------------

Neil McGovern sent an update on the state of the "Wheezy" freeze [5],
explaining that the Release Team is now particularly focused on managing
unblock requests (where these comply with the freeze policy [6]) and
removing buggy leaf packages. Meanwhile, the Release Critical bug count
is decreasing, thanks also to the great number of Bug Squashing Parties
held during recent months. More Debian Bug Squashing Parties [7] are
scheduled for the upcoming weeks: you can help Debian to release sooner
by participating!

The Polish Debian User Group [8] created a nice graph of the number of
Release Critical bugs in Debian over the last year [9].

Release-Critical bugs statistics for the upcoming release
---------------------------------------------------------

According to the Bugs Search interface of the Ultimate Debian
Database [23], the upcoming release, Debian "Wheezy", is currently
affected by 425 Release-Critical bugs. Ignoring bugs which are easily
solved or on the way to being solved, roughly speaking, about 220
Release-Critical bugs remain to be solved for the release to happen.
Richard Hartmann published some more detailed statistics [24].
