I believe (and I hope I'm not stepping on any toes here) that was
meant, at least to some extent, to be "A Modest Proposal on the Topic
of Sensible Expansions to Piecepack".

I think I do recall seeing that exact question on a Mensa test, though:
1 2 ?
4 3 ?
? ? ?
What five numbers should be used to fill in the missing spaces. Note:
there is only one "correct" answer.

Just goes to show, humans are very, very good at finding patterns in
things whether or not they exist.

Personally, I got around the issue by making a few piecepacks some
with fleur-de-lis, some with anchors and even some green and yellow
crowns. I even made one with seasons, although apparently according to
the aforementioned wiki page, I used the wrong colors. I can easily
fit four piecepacks into an 8 1/2" x 11" x 2" stationary box, so its
not too much of a burden as far as I'm concerned, especially since
mine are clear acrylic coated foam core and so are quite light.

The hard part for me is convincing my various gaming friends to
actually try out any of the games. Perhaps its time for another round
of attempts.

Oh, I certainly didn't arrive at the idea independently - I'd seen that
set, and maybe one other, using Anchors.

A small drawback is that then, in King Arthur's Court

http://www.ludism.org/ppwiki/KingArthursCourt

Lancelot would have to be represented by the Anchor instead of the fleur-de-lis.

And even though it is true that both the fleur-de-lis and the crown represent Nobility, someone made a distinction between the two:

I suppose another reason why it was chosen for the JCD Piecepack is that the Crown symbol can be drawn hollow while the Anchor symbol can be drawn full, to match the other suites: the Sun symbol can be drawn hollow, while the Moon symbol can be drawn full.

JCD Piecepack is a two-tones-only piecepack designed to be used for laser cutting. AFAIK.

My PiecePack derivative design has this property too:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/image/1639074/piecepack

As I mentioned before I chose those symbols because they come in the Dingbats font, and can represent a variety of things, too:

yellow cross: summer, hot, religion, priest, nobility, ruler, king, target

blue snow flake: winter, cold, water, electricity, technology, spells, crystals

green arrow: archer, aggression, wind/fall, shovel, speed, leader, pointer

red flower: spring, damsel, life, softness, vegetable, food, nature.

Yes, I agree with this. The Anchor is (in addition to compatibility with
the Empire deck) a symbol with IMO broader connotations than the
fleur-de-lis.

I hadn't realised but you're right that the Crown overlaps somewhat with
the Fleur-de-lis, since the latter is heavily associated with French
monarchy. It's good that (AFAIK) the Anchor doesn't have this kind of
symbology overlap with any other Piecepack symbols.

I'd be in favour of making the Anchor an official replacement for that
suit.

Galaxy Express does too, vaguely - Crowns for goods, the Sun for thrust and

But now you mention it, I can't think of any others.

It makes sense, I remember using Anchor to represent "sinking" in the PiecePack adaptation of Forbidden Island.

Are there other games that assign meaning to the suites? I can only think of "King Arthur's Court":

and Piecepack Letterbox.

    <description>&lt;pre&gt;Good question, David.

I can't quite remember, but I think I thought the Anchor would be more
versatile because it could represent ships, the ocean, iron, etc., whereas
the fleur-de-lis could represent weapons and aristocracy (and the latter is
already represented by crowns)

Since then, I've also expanded it to meet the specifications of the 9-suit
piecepack in the Sensible Expansions article (

it. I was wondering if people had played with these expanded piecepacks
and, if so, what their opinions of it were.

I recently looked into the Piecepack in more detail and found it pretty
exciting. I've designed my own coins and tiles (I've bought dice and pawns
on Ebay) and I've attached them if you're interested (unfortunately I
stuffed up some of the line widths for the blank tiles).

With my friends or by myself I've played a few games: Fuji-san is a
favourite, I also enjoyed Zombies in my Piecepack and Galaxy Express from
the solitaires. Last night we played Delegate Dash and San Andreas, both of
which we took a while to understand.

Cheers,
