Emacs 23.4 released

GNU Emacs 23.4 has been released, and is now available at
ftp.gnu.org/gnu/emacs/ and the GNU FTP mirrors (see
http://www.gnu.org/order/ftp.html).

The SHA1 checksums are:

0a78466fff52d1f43c0db0ea66651a0b13b7e473 emacs-23.4.tar.gz
5effbd2af6bf7a4feb2d80810e49b0ce47b463cb emacs-23.4.tar.bz2

Please send bug reports to bug-gnu-emacs< at >gnu.org. You can use the
command M-x report-emacs-bug to do this.

Emacs 23.4 mainly fixes a security flaw in EDE (CVE-2012-0035),
described at

 http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/emacs-devel/2012-01/msg00387.html

It also contains a number of other bugfixes.

Corrected tarballs for Emacs 23.2 and 23.3

GNU Emacs 23.2 and 23.3 were released without some grammar files from
which the parsers used in its CEDET component were generated. These
grammar files should have been included, as they constitute part of the
real source code. New versions of the tarballs, marked 23.2a and 23.3a,
were uploaded, but David Engster noticed that two grammar files were
still inadvertently omitted (the grammar for the grammars themselves,
and a grammar used in the Srecode part of CEDET).

I have uploaded corrected 23.2b and 23.3b tarballs, with those grammar
files added, to the GNU FTP server at

 ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/emacs/emacs-23.2b.tar.bz2
 ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/emacs/emacs-23.2b.tar.gz
 ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/emacs/emacs-23.3b.tar.bz2
 ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/emacs/emacs-23.3b.tar.gz

All redistributors are urged to upgrade to these revised releases.
Their md5sums are:

 96a05f185ac32eccff7b06ba67808a80 emacs-23.2b.tar.gz
 f6bec0cdce31a40e879a8b7355d016fd emacs-23.2b.tar.bz2
 f2bfd8eab7e3b34a0f7f09acc0667e71 emacs-23.3b.tar.gz
 917ce0054ef63773078a6e99b55df1ee emacs-23.3b.tar.bz2

Note that the FSF has previously granted permission to distribute the
23.1 and 23.2 releases, notwithstanding the absence of the grammar
files, provided those versions comply with GNU GPL version 3 in all
other respects:

 http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/info-gnu-emacs/2011-08/msg00003.html

This earlier statement covers the two missing grammar files as well.
Just to be safe, RMS will put out another statement granting permission
to distribute, which will cover the Emacs 24 pretests too.

Thanks, and sorry for any inconvenience caused.

Poll about proposed change in DEL (aka Backspace) and Delete

In Emacs 24, now in pretest, a change is being considered for ASCII
DEL (on most keyboards, the Backspace key) and the Delete function
key. The change affects the case of an active region that was not
dragged with the mouse. The change is that these commands would
delete the region, rather than just one character as now.

In the past, this behavior was enabled in some minor modes: CUA mode,
Delete Selection mode, and PC Selection mode. In the 24.0.90 pretest,
this behavior is enabled by default. Thus, building and using the
pretest is an easy way to try the change.

Here are the questions we hope you will answer:

* Are you in favor of this change?

* Are you opposed to this change?

* How strongly do you feel about the matter?

We don't want to just "count votes" -- we want to understand
how this affects users. So if you care about the issue,
please tell us how the change affects your editing.

* What are the cases where you find it helps?

* What are the cases where you find it hurts?

* What is your level of Emacs experience?

A further change in the same area has been suggested: when there is an
active region, a self-inserting character would delete the region
before the character is inserted by default.

* What would you think of this further change?

Please send your responses to emacs-delete-poll< at >gnu.org.

Correcting legal consequences of our mistake in Emacs 23.2 and 23.3

The FSF hereby grants permission to distribute the old Emacs 23.2 and
23.3 releases, notwithstanding the absence therein of the real source
files for the CEDET parsers (the grammar files). This permission
extends to versions with unrelated modifications, provided those
versions comply with GNU GPL version 3 in all other respects.

Thanks to some of the improvements in GPL version 3, we don't need to
explicitly forgive past violations caused by redistributing Emacs 23.2
and 23.3, because those violations would only have consequences for
the redistributors if the FSF were to complain about them to the
redistributors within 60 days of such redistribution. The FSF commits
not to complain about this problem.

The FSF urges all redistributors to upgrade as soon as possible to the
revised Emacs 23.2 and 23.3 releases, now in ftp.gnu.org, which do not
have this problem. The corrected files have 23.2a and 23.3a in their
names.

fakemail is a standalone program distributed with Emacs.

It sends mail using the "/bin/mail" program, for systems without a
"sendmail" (or equivalent) program. Emacs offers other ways to send
mail, eg via smtp. Also, the Lisp library feedmail.el offers a
superset of fakemail's functionality (without needing the fakemail
executable).

If you expect to need fakemail in Emacs 24, please send a note to
emacs-devel< at >gnu.org explaining why none of the the other methods of
sending mail work for you.
