Washington DC—The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) is holding a webcast on Thursday, May 24, from 2:00–3:00 p.m. ET, on the substance and implications of the recent decision in the lawsuit over Georgia State University's (GSU) e-reserves program. Brandon Butler, ARL Director of Public Policy Initiatives, and Jonathan Band (policybandwidth) will recap the basic facts of the case and the key holdings in the decision, discuss the possible next steps in the litigation, and suggest some of the possible consequences for libraries making their own decisions about how best to implement a fair use policy in the context of course reserves.

archiving a wiki

<pre>Apologies for cross posting -

My organization would like to archive/export our internal wiki in some
kind of end-user friendly format. The concept is to copy the wiki
contents annually to a format that can be used on any standard computer
in case of an emergency (i.e. saved as an HTML web-style archive, saved
as PDF files, saved as Word files).

Another way to put it is that we are looking for a way to export the
contents of the wiki into a printer-friendly format - to a document that
maintains some organization and formatting and can be used on any
standard computer.

Is anybody aware of a tool out there that would allow for this sort of
automated, multi-page export? Our wiki is large and we would prefer not
to do this type of backup one page at a time. We are using JSPwiki, but
I'm open to any option you think might work. Could any of the web
harvesting products be adapted to do the job? Has anyone else backed up
a wiki to an alternate format?

Thanks!

<pre>There are two issues here, the quality of the image, and the tools for
zooming and panning. You have received some good suggestions for the
latter, let me dwell on the former.

I would concur that you should start by scanning in grayscale. You will
get a much more "zoomability". You might even increase your scanning
density.

Then see if you can remove the speckles. Are they on the original? If you
use a different scanner, or reposition the microfilm, do the speckles stay
consistent? If not, then it's a scanning problem. If they ARE on the
original, most image-processing software will have a filter for removing
speckles. The filter should be adjustable for sensitivity, so you can
avoid removing too much of the original document.

The lines probably ARE on the original, a result of running the film
through the reader many times. You might find a filter to remove those,
but that would be harder to find than one for speckles.

Then apply a threshold filter. Adjust it so the background goes to pure
white. This will improve compressibility.

These are just some ideas. If you will post a higher-res grayscale image
of one page, I'll play around with it.

Finally, I note that a Google search for "best practices scanning
microfilm" produces a number of promising links.

<pre>John,

Is it possible to scan in grayscale? This will help legibility.

I know that grayscale will make larger files. If that is a problem, then
still scan in grayscale, then try to do some image clean up like adjusting
levels across all files or all files with a certain set of parameters
(maybe like http://journal.code4lib.org/articles/5385 ) , then convert to
black and white or otherwise optimize.

By the way, as I'm sure you already know, digitizing microfilm results in
much poorer image quality than does digitizing paper. If you start with a
bad image, you can only do so much. If you start with a good image, and
then decide to loose quality by optimizing, then you have a full range of
choices in that tradeoff. If you have the option to digitize paper, you
are probably better off putting labor or outsourcing costs into handling
paper for a clean initial scan, rather than putting labor costs into
handling and processing digital files to compensate for a poor initial
scan. Experiment and maybe you will find you get more bang for your buck
digitizing paper.

<pre>Hi John,

Just http://Zoom.it/

This is a new service from Microsoft. It accepts PDF. Here is what it
made of your PDF.
http://zoom.it/kEKP

They can accept images of any size.

The technology is cross-brower and only requires JavaScript on the client
side.

It's a development from Microsoft Livelabs' SeaDragon.

If you decide that this is the way to go, then you could actually Implement
this yourself. I managed to implement it in PHP on Linux a couple of years
ago as part of a data visualisation project.

All the best,

David,

<pre>Hello,

you might want to have a look at the djvu format.

http://djvu.org/ &lt;http://djvu.org/gallery/books.php&gt;

Here is an example for a book: http://djvu.org/gallery/books.php (you can
use the Java viewer if you have no djvu plug in installed)

Most stuff you need is available for free (see also

I ran across a site using Zoomify and thought it looked interesting,
but I haven't had a chance to try it.

&lt;http://zoomify.com/&gt;

They seem more intended for large maps, but large documents would work as well.

<pre>Hi Bob,

Thanks for your reply. I have put the sample online at
http://places.galwaylibrary.ie/sample.pdf.

The file is about 2.3Mb in size. It is from page 3 on that the file is typical of what we are trying to do. Each page will ultimately be a separate file.

Regards
John

why does a browser not know the results of a DNS lookup?

<pre>Hi,

If a person types an incorrect domain name in an address bar, the browser will prompt him or her to check the network connection. (It also prompts him or her to check the domain name.) For example, Mozilla Firefox will respond with

*****************************************

Check the address for typing errors such as
 ww.example.com instead of
 www.example.com

If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
 connection.

If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

*****************************************

Why does the browser not know that the network connection is fine, and simply prompt the person to re-examine the domain name? Does DNS not communicate with HTTP?

Any help with satisfying my curiosity would be much appreciated.

Regards
John

John

<pre>Hi,

We are in the process of making very old hand written documents available on the Web. The handwritten information has been typed up and converted to HTML, but we are hoping to provide links from this to the originals which will be in PDF format.

The originals are on microfilm. Each page is about six times as wide as it is high. We have scanned a sample, but find that when zooming in, it quickly becomes impossible to read the handwriting. Vertical lines which are on the microfilm become more of a problem when enlarging the image. Also, because of the document's dimensions, much of the document disappears off screen when zooming in, and a large scrollbar appears at the bottom of the screen.

A cleaner image and an ability to pan and zoom with the mouse would be ideal. What is the best way of achieving this? Any help would be much appreciated.

Regards
John

<pre>
Yeah, off and on for about 17 years now. :-)

My advice is for web designers to rethink how they approach this.
Browsers are on fast upgrade paths these days, increasingly with
auto-updates, and users may not even know what version they're
running. Besides, what matters to you is more likely to be the
version of Gecko, Webkit, or Trident they're running, and not so much
the browser. Even if you could guarantee support for, say, Firefox
12, do you support it with my particular plug-ins, my monitor
resolution and screen width, my security and privacy settings, etc?

The more universally reliable approach (IMO) has always been to target
a sensible set of standards for markup, style, and scripting. That's
trickier today than in the past, because the de facto standards today
are really "HTML 4 plus parts of HTML5", "CSS 2.1 plus some of 3", and
probably "Whatever JQuery supports." But that's the direction you
need to go.

You might want to check your logs to figure out which tail-end
browsers (IE6, Firefox 2) you can give yourself permission to stop
worrying about.
