(GRE Success! ) OT: Harry Potter and the art of learning English!

Hello Everyone,

I have been a big fan of the Harry Potter for various reasons, but one of
the most intriguing reasons is that J.K.Rowling goes well beyond just
staying very true to various myths and legends, in that she is able to mold
English, and her various feed-in languages like a master artist molds clay.
If you are in the beginning stages of learning English (beyond the mistake
prone, essential communications), HP is a great place to start. Read the
answer from Sandhya Ramesh on this question:

http://www.quora.com/What-are-the-best-puns-word-play-in-the-Harry-Potter-series

And don't forget to go after the unstoppable P.G. Wodehouse, the erstwhile
Douglas Adams and the severally talented Charles Dickens, or Jane Austen,
who wrote tomes just based on one or two adjectives or nouns!

Enjoy!

Srihari

Hello,

This is to remind you that you are still a member of GRESUCCESS, a group that aspires to help people, and dispel rumors regarding GRE, TOEFL, TSE, and other standardized tests, as well as, the entire application process in general. The group is also attempting to broaden its arms with quaint research on general aspects and observations of studying abroad. Please feel free to mail your concerns to the group by emailing to gre-success-hHKSG33TihhbjbujkaE4pw< at >public.gmane.org

1. If you have any private queries, or if you are shy of asking a question in front of hundreds of people, let me re - assure you that you are entering a group of cultured people who will not laugh, disapprove or hold you in disdain. If still, you are apprehensive, please mail your queries to me at yamanoor-/E1597aS9LQAvxtiuMwx3w< at >public.gmane.org

2. Kindly try to make maximum use of the group by accessing and contributing to the links, database, files, photos and calendar sections of the group. Please be discreet. I shall remove any offensive material. Kindly add to any of the relevant tables in the database. Please upload files that you think will be useful for the members in the group. Kindly check for, and abstain from adding too large, or virus loaded files. Please upload any photographs of yours that you would wish to share with us (This shall be subject to scrutiny though..flimsy bikinis and flashy pets are fine...but I still insist on cross checking! :)). Also, please upload any important deadlines that you think might benefit the group. It is also not a bad idea to put up your birth date, test date etc on the calendar. This
is a group full of fun loving people and we would like to share your joy!

3. Unfortunately, our group does not have the rights to use the polls section. I don't know how that came into existence. Kindly bear with me. We shall use free tools available on the internet for the same.

4. Please try to visit my home page http://www.yamanoor.com/gre/ to take advantage of the resources linked, that shall help you in your entire application process.

5. Also kindly note, I strongly discourage any personal messages or communications across the group. I will be moderating without exception, any messages that are either low in utility, or are sensitive, racial, or disapprovable in any manner.

6. It is my earnest request that you tell more friends about the group so that we can help serve a larger group of interested people. Also, if you have web pages, kindly consider using the promotion tools to make the process of subscribing easier for your visitors.

7. Do mail in more suggestions as and when you wish and think it is necessary. Every word is listened to.

8. A final note, as you see, the group's objective is to not only help and provide suggestions, it is also to dispel all sorts of rumors about the process that keep cropping up now and then. So, it is upto you to ask as many questions as you can.

Thanks for being a part of the movement.

Good Luck

Hi again

Thanks for answering. Actually if this question came up in a written test
like the GMAT, then it would certainly be beneficial to consider "it" a
mistake in the sentence. But in general talking and understanding I think
it'll pass as acceptable.

P.S. - The second "it" has no antecedent in the above sentence but in
general conversation [it] is understood.
Sorry for the useless joke :D :D.

When I responded today morning, I was glad I had shared the link to the
source article. I had to look twice before I made my statement. I will try
to defend it, but it is pretty week I have to admit :).

The author was referring to both the accuser and the defendant by using the
word "their". Your logic is absolutely right in strict terms, but I took a
looser interpretation after reading that sentence and examining the
context.

Hi

Thanks for the reply. I have a question though -

Shouldn't the [their] have a proper antecedent? A pronoun is wrongly used
if it does not refer directly to an antecedent. Here the antecedents are
only Taitz and Botterud, and both are singular. Or is it legitimate to use
[their] in the way it has been done in this case?

Please clarify. :) . Thanks.

(GRE Success! ) Finalizing a University - Pravin Dhandapani

Hi,

Now I am planning to do my Master's in US. And I have got admits from 4 universities and none has offered financial aids.

Following are the universities in which I got admits:

1) Ohio State University (US news ranking - 18)

2) University at Buffalo, SUNY (US news ranking - 25)

3) Clemson University (US news ranking - 30)

4) Oklahoma State University. (US news ranking - 32)

And I wish to specialize in Manufacturing or Supply chain.

And now I am confused in choosing between these universities.

Could you please suggest a better university for me?

And is there any other specialization which are better than those I mentioned?

In the list, Ohio State University is reputed but it costs a lot almost the double the cost of other universities and its hard for me to pay for it.

I hope you can help me in choosing the universities and get me out of this confusion.

Eagerly waiting for your reply.

Regards,

Pravin Dhandapani.

Hello All,

I recently stumbled upon this website 750words.com which encourages
you to write something everyday. It is not a like a blog, it is
private and the interface is a full clear page for you to write. The
idea is that you write everything down, clear you mind off as you
start your day and you will be work better. You can see this tool as
some kind of productivity enhancer. After you have a streak with the
site, it does some primitive sentiment analysis that you can look at.
That's a fun part, but the important thing is you get a skill by
writing something and giving to to your flow everyday.

Give this a try.

Good Luck

Srihari

"Armed with this knowledge, I and a team of others here at EPA are
dedicated to feeding people, not landfills through the Sustainable
Materials Management Program’s (SMM) Food Recovery Challenge"

[1] there should be a comma after "not landfills". Otherwise, it will seem
like the SMM Food Recovery Challenge is for the "landfills" part and not
for the "feeding people" part.

[2] "I and a team of others here" -- I would reconstruct this phrase to put
"I" at the end, say, "A team of members/locals/whoever here and I"

Hi

""Your opposition will constitute Obstruction of Justice, Aiding and
Abetting in the elections fraud in forgery [,] and treason in allowing a
foreign citizen to usurp the civil rights of the U.S. citizens and the U.S.
Presidency, with [an] [the] aid of forged IDs" Taitz wrote in an
email<http://www.orlytaitzesq.com/?p=360759> to
Botterud ahead of [their] [his/her] court date. "

1. The [,] is required just before the "and" because the expression after
the "and" is a long one.
2. A little rearrangement of the elements of the second "and" makes the
sentence easier to read and understand.
3. [the] should be used instead of [an]. Or it could be completely omitted.
4. [his/her] should be used instead of [their] in order to refer to Taitz -
I am not sure about this.

Please tell me if I am wrong. Also please tell me about any other errors
present.

Thanks.

Hi

Armed with this knowledge, I and a team of others here at EPA are dedicated
to feeding people[,] [and] not landfills through the Sustainable Materials
Management Program’s <http://www.epa.gov/smm/> (SMM) Food Recovery
Challenge<http://www.epa.gov/smm/foodrecovery/index.htm>
. "

The only error I can find is the one with the [,]. [and] should be used in
place of [,].

Please let me know if there are other errors.
Thanks.

Exactly.

The 'is' is for the noun 'number' and not for the noun 'guns'.

Great Work !
