I have been using the Squirrel SQL for quite some time, and I have grown to love it!

Maybe this link might be better for the set-up:

It takes a little bit of work to set it up the first time. You have to install the driver, and configure an alias...

I also like Squirrel, that I can easily export my results to XLS too!

For my SQL Development, I happen to use SQL Squirrel. Which gives me Color Syntax, and it remembers my last 100 SQL Statements! Very Handy! And I have programmed commonly used SQL Statement into "Bookmarks", to instantly call them...

I am using 8.5.1, and I am using DS 3.1.1, as i recall.

I looked at DS some time ago - I think it's received enhancements for better IBM i support. Just my impression.

And turn on the feature to make F-keys into buttons!

Also double-click in an empty spot to do an Enter

Also double-click on text to put it at the cursor - hey it's all a green

But it is good - even PC5250 had tricks for us today!

Just make a keyboard mapping that gives you Ctrl-X|C|V - I have one that 
I can send to anyone - contact me privately. Also a feature-rich toolbar 
- more macro options, all that.

IBM Data Studio has been getting more investment from IBM over the last 2
years. But it is focused DB2 LUW (Linux, Unix, Windows). Of course 95% of
the SQL is the same, so IBM i support benefits from this investment. But
for IBM i unique things, there will be limitations. IBM Data Studio has
great features for query tuning, for example, but they do not work with IBM
i. The IBM i Navigator is still the way to go with that. But for working
with SQL queries there is a lot of value there and we have tested that IBM
Data Studio can be completely integrated with RD Power.

I haven't tested it myself, but I have heard others on this list mention
QUANTUM DB as a free plugin for SQL.

Buck mentioned that RUNSQL doesn't do a SELECT. It also doesn't have 
substitution variables, either. You have to put values into dynamic 
statement strings.

The generic SQL processors that Buck and I and others have written all 
use only substitution variables in a QMQRY, and those also need you to 
construct the statement, concatenating values into the statement. This 
makes it about the same as the new RUNSQL from IBM, with the benefit of 
being able to use STRSQL. I've done a presentation on this at COMMON and 
at a couple user groups.

Just to level-set, I've learned a lot from your EXCSQL stuff - not sure 
if that's the exact name, of course.

So I'm adding a bit here (standing on your shoulders, so to speak) that 
might help clarify things a bit.

STRQM is Query Manager - the interface for working with QM objects, as 
you describe.

We don't HAVE to create *QMFORMs, but they do need ultimately to have a 
*QMQRY as data source. But there is a system default form that can be used.

I have a feeling - not based on being told, of course - that all QMQRYs 
are kind of source-based. Maybe there's an internal source, maybe just 
in memory, that STRQM uses. Doesn't matter to me much though.

RTVQMQRY doesn't retrieve source for QMFORMs - have to use RTVQMFORM for 
that. This brings up a thought - Query/400 queries combine data and 
presentation in one object, QM separates them. And the RTVQM* commands 
can be used to get QM source from QRYDFNs - pretty cool!

I find that STRQM is most beneficial in working with forms - as you 
suggest, it's painful to directly edit QMFORM source - fixed-format to 
the nth degree!!

I added a couple type codes to Turnover for QM objects, as I recall, at 
a previous employer. I also added user actions in RSE for the RTVQM* and 
CRTQM* stuff, as I recall. I would never directly edit form source, 
however, I'd go to STRQM for that. But it needed for Turnover to handle.

As for prompting, STRQM uses the same prompter as STRSQL. I've heard, so 
it's pretty old-fashioned and doesn't support a lot of the new stuff - 
not sure how well Data Studio does that, just haven't had time for more 
extensive testing.

And prompting is not available in STRQM, once you put in substitution 
variables.

Anyhow, just more thoughts on one of my favorite things, next to 
schnitzel with noodles! (obscure cinematic reference)

years.  It's called FROG.  It's a free utility.  A quick Internet search

I think you have to launch it as an external editor.  Like I said, I 
haven't used it in years and I don't remember how well it worked, but I 
was able to open and edit QM objects in a graphical PC editor.

   Edmund, I did the Verify (Prompt) and selected refresh cache.  It took a
   while but it came back.
   Oddly it gave errors on the verify
   RR05 C/exec sql
   RR05  + open highcursor
   RNF0258: Form-Type entry is not valid for subprocedures, or is out of
   sequence.
   RR05 C/end-exec
   on sql statements with the older syntax (columnar) but no errors on the
   sql when it was used in /Free.  Anyway that's another issue...

   I tried the compare once again after the verify and it still didn't
work.
   The log file showed the same error.

   Doug Davie (softlanding) said he will look into this when he has a
moment.

      I am using RDp 8.5.1.  I have the Softlanding plugin for RSE
installed
   and
      use it's functionality quite regularly.

      Today I attempted to compare ( and then apply ) a change I had made
on
   my
      test box to the production box.  I have a connection defined for each
   box.

      I right clicked on the member on the production box and selected RSE
      Extensions->Compare and selected the compare member on test box
   connection
      and library.  Open for Edit was also selected.

      When I pressed OK the dialog box disappeared but nothing opened.  I
   tried
      this a number of times, even changed to Open for Browse and still
   nothing
      opened.

      I did a -clean and nothing opened.

      I tried the reverse (opening the test member to compare to the
   production
      member) on the test connection's member.  Nothing happened.

      I made a copy of the member in the test test library and this time it
      opened.

      So, does the compare not work against multiple connections?
      If it should work has anyone experienced this before?
      Where would I look to see what the problem is?

I am not familiar with STRQM but if you want to just tweak SQL, you can
past it into an IBM Data Studio query.  IBM Data Studio is free and
integrates with RD Power.  For RDp 8.5, I think you would want to install
IBM Data Studio 3.1.1

RUNSQL doesn't do SELECT, so that won't help.

We use QM in order to run SQL from CL because it handles variables unlike RUNSQLSTM.   We're not actually using it for presentation, so we don't touch the forms aspect.
We should be getting the latest Technology Refresh soon so maybe we'll be able to use CL's RUNSQL instead of QM.
