<pre>
Hello

I'm a new subscriber and having difficulty.

I type a sentence in Hebrew and want to insert a piece of English, say
the title of an English book , in the middle of the sentence.
I place the insertion point where I want the title but the title is
placed at the beginning of the sentence rather than in the middle where
I want it.
The title looks OK in terms of the RTL/LTR direction but is misplaced.

(I have had the same problem when using MSWord.)

Any help with this very basic problem would be appreciated.

<pre>
Hello Mickael

There might be a way to have Abiword handle folders with accented characters, or may be not. The answer might not be in Abiword, but with the Operating System. My message, here, is that I would NOT recommend to use anything above ASCII 127 in file and folder names.

I knew times, when files had to be 8.3 (8 characters for the name, 3 characters for the extension) and a to z, 0 to 9, hyphen or underscore, especially NO space character.

Today, I am not sticking to the 8.3 rule any more, but I am still sticking to the a-z, 0-9, hyphen, underscore, NO space rule.

Even if file names containing spaces and several special characters may be accepted "more or less" in most operating systems nowadays, it is and will always be a source of problems.

Even if you can teach your OS to handle files with accents well in most cases, problems will surely occur when you give your file to someone using a different OS.

That's why I'm preaching since 30 years to stick to ASCII 127 and NO spaces when naming files. Sometimes, it seems that nobody dares to listen.

Just imagine what happens when URLs are made of files containing spaces :
one must call this URL with an ugly %20 instead of the space

Or URLs with # &amp; ? in the file names, these characters have a special meaning in URLs and web browsers will be discombobulated.

Mickael, I'm French too, but I never used accents, umlauts, cédilles, spaces, nor anything out of ASCII 127 in file names. I'm used to do so for more than 30 years. Life is easier that way.

Hello.
I wrote you a few minutes ago a message which was the following one:
-----------------
Hello.
I am writing you because I happen to encounter some problems with Abiword. I am running Windows XP and I associated the file extension .rtf with Abiword. When I try to double click on an rtf file present on the local disk (where is installed Abiword), it opens perfectly; only when I try this procedure with a file on my external drive, Abiword opens a blank file. Is there to your knowledge a manipulation that I can do to solve that? Thank you in advance.
Mickael
-----------------
I ask you not to take this into account, as I got into the details and I think that the problem is not a disk-related problem but a problem related with characters management. Indeed, as I am French, I use accents in the names of my files and folders and it turns out that it is precisely from a folder with an accent in his name that I found myself unable to load the file in question. I renamed the folder and it worked.
I would therefore rephrase my question and ask you if you think that I can have Abiword handle paths correctly with accented letters.
Thank you.

If it ties your panties up this much, just use VI/VIM/GVIM! Matter of fact, I
do just this and save everything important as text. Saving important stuff in
other formats seems cumbersome as everybody uses something different. Can't go
wrong with ascii/text if you don't want to waste time keeping up with trends!

As for the b/g and f/g color in Abiword, I think something like changing the
colors can be restricted to the "Normal Layout" (ie. black b/g and white f/g),
while "Print Preview Layout" will revert to normal colors shown when printing
(ie. white b/g and black f/g).

Does anyone know if the bug 5252
(http://bugzilla.abisource.com/show_bug.cgi?id=5252) has been fixed,
or if some workaround is available?
From the bug report page it appears that no solution has been found yet... :(

What's the use of being able to change the document background (which
is very useful in itself), if the cursor caret remains black and
therefore invisible? It makes this color scheme totally useless! This
is really frustrating!

It seems that the color options of the GUI have been grossly
neglected, since apart from the cursor caret color there are also
other things (e.g. the screen-only color of the text) which need to be
fixed.

Really disappointing.

Hi,

We do call gtk_show_uri() on gtk &gt; 2.14.

If you don't run at least Gtk 2.14 (and are not on Maemo) then there is
nothing much worth doing.

You patch is broken because it wants people to have gnome-vfs (which I
shall remind is deprecated for a very long time) to deal with
gtk_show_uri(). This is just wrong.

And yes we have fallback. I'm ok to add "xdg-open" as the first command
to try.

That is the fallback. In there there gnomevfs of gvfs (build time

Hi Larry,

In the first instance abiword checks the content of the "BROWSER"
environment variable to search for prefered installed web browser. If
this is not set it then itterates through a list optential browsers
and looks for each on the users system. The first one it finds it uses
to open the help page. The list is:

"sensible-browser",/* debian */
"epiphany",/* primary gnome */
"galeon",/* secondary gnome */
"encompass",
"firefox",
"mozilla-firebird",
"mozilla",
"netscape",
"konqueror",
"xterm -e w3m",
"xterm -e lynx",
"xterm -e links"

If it fails to find any of these give up and you get the error you see.

Cheers
Martin

How is Help browser started?

<pre>
The items in the Help Menu start "your default browser" to display the
help. How is that accomplished? I ask because it does not work for
me. If I start Abiword in a terminal I get the message 'Warning:
Operation Not Supported' when I click the Help menu -&gt; Help Contents.
This is in Puppy Linux which is not standard in many ways--to get the
Help working in one program, I needed a file named 'sensible-browser' to
start the default browser. Thanks for any help. (Sorry if this is a
duplicate--I sent one before I was authorized I think.)
